Crypto Liquidations Hit $547 Million as Bitcoin Rises; Oil Link Unverified

The reported $547 million in crypto liquidations came as Bitcoin rose above $81,000 on September 18, 2026, and mostly involved shorts. It is a separate event from October’s oil-related market coverage.

The reported $547 million in crypto liquidations occurred on September 18, 2026, as Bitcoin crossed $81,000—and most were short positions, not longs. The report does not connect that event to an oil rally. A separate October 6 decline coincided with oil-related macro pressure and produced a different reported total: $555.6 million, mostly long liquidations.

What happened in the $547 million liquidation event?

The Daily Hodl reported that CoinGlass data showed $547 million in leveraged crypto positions liquidated over 24 hours on September 18, 2026, as Bitcoin moved above $81,000. The report listed $469.19 million in short liquidations and $57.10 million in long liquidations. Those figures are attributed to CoinGlass through secondary reporting, rather than independently verified primary event data. The Daily Hodl’s September 18 report also listed Bitcoin at $243.54 million, Ethereum at $95.66 million and Solana at $36.29 million in liquidations.

The short and long amounts cited in the report add up to less than its $547 million headline total. Treat them as reported breakdown figures, not a complete reconciliation of the total.

Was the $547 million event caused by rising oil prices?

The available reporting does not establish that link. The September 18 report associates the liquidation total with Bitcoin crossing $81,000; it does not say an oil rally caused the event. The headline’s causal wording therefore goes beyond what that report verifies.

  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Oil-linked trading has appeared in a separate crypto-venue liquidation story: a CoinDesk report published April 2, 2026, said tokenized Brent oil futures on Hyperliquid were involved in liquidations after geopolitical news pushed crude higher. That shows oil-linked contracts can figure in crypto-venue liquidation reports; it does not show that oil caused the September $547 million event.

How does this differ from the October liquidation report?

On October 6, 2026, The Block reported a separate 24-hour total of $555.6 million in crypto liquidations as Bitcoin briefly fell to around $83,800. The report attributed $487.2 million to long liquidations. It described the decline as primarily driven by profit-taking and forced long closures after open interest and funding rates had built up. The Block quoted Zeus Research analyst Dominick John: “Bitcoin’s pullback appears primarily driven by profit-taking and forced long liquidations, following a build-up in open interest and funding rates that left the market vulnerable to deleveraging.” Read The Block’s October 6 coverage.

Report Market move described Reported 24-hour liquidations Position split
September 18, 2026; CoinGlass data reported by The Daily Hodl Bitcoin crossed $81,000 $547 million $469.19 million shorts; $57.10 million longs
October 6, 2026; CoinGlass data reported by The Block Bitcoin briefly fell to around $83,800 $555.6 million $487.2 million longs; short total not stated in the report cited

These are separate observations, not competing estimates of the same event. The price direction and the side of the market most affected differ. The Block also cautioned that liquidation figures based on publicly available data may significantly understate total market liquidations, so neither headline should be treated as a complete count.

What a liquidation total does—and does not—tell you

A liquidation is the forced closure of a leveraged position when losses or insufficient margin breach a platform’s requirements. When many traders are positioned in the same direction, forced closures can add buying or selling pressure and amplify a market move. A reported total is a measure of estimated positions closed during a stated window; it is not a direct measure of investor losses across the entire market, nor proof of what triggered the price change.

Direction matters when interpreting the number. Short liquidations occur when traders betting on a price decline are forced out, often during a rise. Long liquidations affect traders betting on a rise, often during a fall. That is why September’s reported short-heavy event should not be described as the same kind of market flush as October’s long-heavy decline.

How to compare liquidation headlines

  • Check the date and the exact observation window: both reports cited here use 24-hour totals, but cover different events.
  • Look for the long-versus-short split and the associated market move; a total alone hides which side was forced out.
  • Note the data source and its scope. The September figures were reported by The Daily Hodl from CoinGlass data; the October figures and the undercount caveat were reported by The Block from CoinGlass data.
  • Do not infer causation from timing alone. A price move occurring amid oil-related concerns does not show that oil caused a specific liquidation total.

For wider context—not a comparable event total—CoinGlass’s first-half 2026 report put June liquidations at US$16.14 billion, the highest monthly total of that half-year, with longs making up 69.5%. CoinGlass’s 2026 first-half derivatives report gives the broader period context.
