Why Some Social Security and SSI Recipients May Get Three Payments in October 2026

Three October deposits may go to some people receiving both SSI and Social Security. The October 30 payment is November’s SSI benefit paid early, not a bonus.

Some people who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may see three benefit deposits in October 2026. The dates are October 1, October 2, and October 30—but they represent two SSI payments and one Social Security payment, with the October 30 deposit being November’s SSI benefit paid early. It is not an extra benefit.

Who may receive three payments in October 2026?

The three-deposit pattern most directly applies to someone who receives both SSI and Social Security and whose Social Security follows the third-of-the-month schedule. That person may receive October SSI on October 1, Social Security on October 2, and November SSI on October 30.

The October 2 Social Security deposit is the October payment shifted earlier because October 3 falls on a Saturday. The October 30 SSI deposit is the November payment shifted earlier because November 1 falls on a Sunday. The Social Security Administration (SSA) explains the payment schedule in its 2026 payment calendar and its payment-date rules.

October 2026 Social Security and SSI payment dates

Payment date Who or what the date applies to
Thursday, October 1 October SSI payment
Friday, October 2 October Social Security payment for people on the third-of-the-month schedule; moved forward because October 3 is Saturday
Wednesday, October 14 Social Security for people whose insured person’s birth date is the 1st through 10th
Wednesday, October 21 Social Security for people whose insured person’s birth date is the 11th through 20th
Wednesday, October 28 Social Security for people whose insured person’s birth date is the 21st through 31st
Friday, October 30 November SSI payment, advanced because November 1 is Sunday

Which payment schedule applies to you?

SSI-only recipients

SSI is generally paid on the first of the month. If the first falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the payment is made on the preceding eligible day. An SSI-only recipient should not assume that the three-deposit pattern applies: the October 2 Social Security payment is part of the pattern only for people who also receive Social Security on the third-of-the-month schedule.

People on the third-of-the-month Social Security schedule

People who were receiving or had applied for Social Security by April 30, 1997, and people who receive both Social Security and SSI generally receive Social Security on the third of the month. When that date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, SSA pays on the preceding day that is not one of those days. In October 2026, that moves the payment to Friday, October 2.

People on the Wednesday Social Security schedule

For many people who applied after April 30, 1997, the Social Security payment date depends on the birth date of the person whose record establishes entitlement:

  • Birth date from the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday, October 14.
  • Birth date from the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday, October 21.
  • Birth date from the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday, October 28.

The relevant birthday is the insured person’s, not necessarily the beneficiary’s. The SSA’s schedule explanation provides more detail; the 2026 calendar gives the dates for this year.

Why are there two SSI deposits in October?

SSI is normally paid once for each month, but the scheduled payment can land in the previous month when the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday. November 1, 2026, is a Sunday, so November’s SSI payment is scheduled for Friday, October 30. It is the regular November benefit arriving early, not a second October SSI benefit or an additional payment.

What to do if a payment is late

The SSA’s 2026 calendar advises allowing three additional mailing days after the expected date before contacting Social Security. You can also review upcoming and past payments in your Social Security account. If your individual schedule differs from the dates above, check your account or the official calendar rather than assuming you are on the third-of-the-month schedule.
