Valve’s engineer said in November 2025 that the Steam Machine would be priced in line with the PC market, not sold at a loss to build market share. Valve had not announced a price then. It later announced US prices starting at $1,049 in June 2026—well above the $500 hopes and roughly $800 guesses circulating in 2025.
What Valve’s engineer said about subsidizing the Steam Machine
In a Friends Per Second interview transcribed by TechRadar on November 24, 2025, Valve software engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais was asked whether Valve would take a large loss on the Steam Machine to grow its market share. He answered: “No, it’s more in line with what you might expect from the current PC market. Obviously, our goal is for it to be a good deal at that level of performance.”
That was a pricing approach, not a price announcement. Griffais said Valve wanted the machine to be a good deal for its performance, but he did not identify a dollar amount. What the Steam Machine costs in the US
Valve’s later announced US prices, reported by PC Gamer on June 22, 2026, replaced the earlier estimates. The listed prices vary by region.

These are announced US prices, not a universal price for every country or a guarantee of current stock. Check the Steam Machine product page for the price and availability in your region. Valve’s limited-drop terms say prices vary by location and may change.
Why the 2025 price guesses were wrong
The earlier figures were estimates, not prices Valve had set. TechRadar discussed hopes of a $500 price and an approximately $800 comparison based on a possible self-build; it also raised the possibility of a higher cost. None of those numbers was an official Steam Machine price.

PC Gamer reported that Valve said its original price goal was no longer viable after significant changes in component costs, especially RAM and storage, and that some parts were unavailable at any price. Valve said the prices it announced reflected component costs it had secured over the preceding six months. That explanation helps account for the gap between the earlier expectations and announced prices; it does not make the original estimates retrospective price quotes.
What Valve says is included in the value
Griffais argued that the machine offers features that can be difficult to reproduce when building a gaming PC from parts: a small form factor, quiet operation, HDMI CEC integration, and wireless design. He specifically cited four antennas and work intended to support an experience with four Bluetooth controllers. These are Valve’s descriptions of the product’s intended advantages, not independent measurements of noise, performance, or wireless reliability.

Those features may matter to someone looking for a compact living-room PC. But deciding whether the price is a good deal still requires comparing the Steam Machine with alternatives of similar performance, in the same market and at current prices. The cited coverage does not establish an independently tested equivalent parts list or a matched-price comparison with a console or self-built PC, so it does not support a claim that the Steam Machine is cheaper or better value than either.

Valve’s limited-drop process used registration and a randomized selection into a reservation queue. PC Gamer reported on July 29, 2026 that Valve was fulfilling orders daily and expected to offer purchase opportunities to people in the queue by the end of 2026. That was an expectation, not a guarantee that every person on the list would be able to buy by then. Check Valve’s product page and current regional availability before treating an announced price as an immediately available offer.
