Apple’s alternative app distribution is available only in Brazil, Japan, and the European Union, with different options by region. In either case, use a source you can verify, keep built-in protections on, and stop if the app or its permissions look wrong. Android calls this downloading apps from other sources; Apple calls it alternative app distribution.
What to check before installing an app
- Look for an official route first. Check Google Play or the app developer’s verified website. If using another marketplace, choose one deliberately and review who operates it and what its policies cover.
- Verify the source independently. Confirm the developer and domain through a trusted channel. Avoid unsolicited links, lookalike domains, link shorteners, and cracked or modified app packages. A familiar-looking page is not proof that a download is safe.
- Match the app to your device. Download only the version intended for your device and operating system. Do not bypass a system warning because a webpage tells you to.
- Read prompts and check permissions. Stop if an app requests sensitive access unrelated to what it does, or if a security warning identifies it as harmful. Verify concerns with the developer through a separate trusted channel.
- Plan for updates and support. Check who handles updates, technical help, purchases, subscriptions, and refunds. Those responsibilities may belong to the app developer or marketplace rather than Apple or Google.
Installing apps outside Google Play on Android
Android allows apps from sources other than Google Play, although Google recommends Play. There is no single settings path that applies to every Android brand and version: menus vary, and manufacturers may customize Android. Follow the prompt on your device; if the documented steps do not work, consult the device manufacturer’s guidance. Google’s Android instructions for downloading apps from other sources explain the option and its risks.
Use the source and prompts as checks, not guarantees
Download from the developer’s verified official source or a marketplace you have chosen and assessed. Read the Android installation and security prompts before proceeding. If a prompt flags an app as potentially harmful, cancel rather than turning off protections; contact the developer through a separate trusted channel if you need to confirm whether the warning is legitimate.
After installation, review the app’s permissions in Android settings. Uninstall it if it behaves unexpectedly or requests access it does not need. A source that appears legitimate does not guarantee an app is safe.

Keep Google Play Protect enabled
Google says Play Protect is on by default and recommends keeping it on. It checks apps during installation and periodically, and may warn you, disable or remove a harmful app, or block some unverified apps that use sensitive permissions often targeted in financial fraud. Play Protect adds checks; it does not make an unknown app trustworthy.
Google says that installing apps from outside Play may send Google app-related information, potentially including log information, app-related URLs, device ID, Android version, and IP address. Play Protect may also ask to send an unknown app to Google for analysis; that scan can share app details for code-level evaluation. Apple alternative app distribution: where it is available
Apple’s rules depend on both region and device. Its guidance says alternative distribution is available in Brazil, Japan, and EU countries and regions. Brazil and Japan support alternative marketplaces on iPhone. In the EU, eligible users can install alternative marketplaces on iPhone and iPad, apps offered through those marketplaces, and apps from a developer’s website. To qualify, your Apple Account country or region and your physical location must both be in an eligible region. See Apple’s availability and eligibility details.
If you leave an eligible region, Apple says you can continue using apps already installed through alternative distribution and updating them for up to 90 days. You must be in an eligible region to install new marketplaces or apps through alternative distribution.

How to install apps through Apple’s alternative distribution
These steps reflect Apple’s instructions published June 22, 2026. Follow the current on-device prompts if labels or screens change. Apple displays an information sheet during installation; read it before allowing an installation.
Install an alternative marketplace in the EU
- On an eligible iPhone or iPad, use a browser to find the marketplace.
- Tap the marketplace’s install link and review Apple’s information sheet.
- Allow the installation and complete the on-screen steps.
Install an alternative marketplace in Brazil or Japan
- On an iPhone running the latest iOS, use a browser to find the marketplace and tap its install link.
- When prompted, open Settings and choose Manage App Installation.
- Allow the marketplace, review the disclosure, and finish the on-screen steps.
Install an app from a developer’s website in the EU
- Use a browser to find the app on the developer’s website.
- If this is your first installation from that developer, allow web installation for that developer in Settings.
- Review Apple’s information sheet and tap Install App.

What Apple’s checks do—and do not—mean
Apple says it notarises apps distributed through alternative routes using automated checks and human review. Notarisation is a baseline platform-integrity safeguard intended to identify known malware and egregious fraud; it is not the full App Store Review Guidelines. Each alternative marketplace sets its own review policies. Apple lists risks that can include malicious code, piracy, objectionable content, scams, fraud, and abuse. Neither notarisation nor a marketplace’s review policy should be treated as a blanket endorsement of an app.
Apple also says its ability to support users affected by apps or marketplaces outside the App Store is limited. You may need to contact the marketplace or developer about problems, purchases, subscriptions, or refunds. If a marketplace closes or is deleted, apps installed from it may stop receiving updates and could stop working. Check who provides support and how updates are handled before installing. How parents can restrict alternative installs on Apple devices
Apple’s Screen Time instructions, published June 18, 2026, give this path: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Installations & Purchases. Set App Marketplaces to Don’t Allow; set Web to Don’t Allow as well if you want to restrict web distribution. Apple notes that restrictions enabled before updating to software that supports alternative distribution may not automatically block it, so check the current settings. Some purchase restrictions may not cover apps that direct users to websites or otherwise take payment outside Apple’s system. See Apple’s Screen Time guidance.
Which platform is safer?
Apple and Google describe different control systems, and their guidance does not provide a directly comparable risk rate. Android allows outside-Play installation with device-level prompts and Play Protect checks. Apple limits alternative distribution by region and device, uses notarisation as a baseline check, and leaves marketplace review policies and much of the support relationship to the marketplace or developer. On either platform, the practical safeguards are to verify the source, heed warnings, limit unnecessary permissions, and understand who is responsible for updates and help.
