Strong bank results do not by themselves make a share attractively priced. The figures below use HDFC Bank’s FY26 annual report and results for the quarter ended 30 June 2026; market data must be checked separately against a current quote.
How should you assess HDFC Bank’s valuation?
For a bank, valuation is most useful when read alongside profitability, risk and growth—not as a standalone multiple. Compare HDFC Bank with relevant listed banks and its own history using the same valuation date, earnings period, accounting definitions and share basis.
Use price-to-book with returns and risk
Price-to-book (P/B) compares the share price with book value per share. A premium may be warranted if a bank can sustain stronger returns on equity (ROE), growth and asset quality; it may be harder to justify if funding costs, credit risk or capital needs are rising. Compare P/B with ROE, capital generation and asset quality rather than calling a low multiple “cheap” on its own.
Use normalized earnings for price-to-earnings
Price-to-earnings (P/E) is only comparable when the earnings period and treatment of unusual items match. HDFC Bank reported basic EPS of ₹48.62 for FY26. Any P/E calculated from a share price should state the price date, the earnings period and the per-share basis used; do not combine a dated quote with EPS and label the result a current multiple without explaining the calculation.

HDFC Bank’s prior-year Q1 comparison included ₹91.3 billion in transaction gains from a partial divestment in HDB Financial Services. The bank reported Q1 FY27 PAT growth of 5.0%; it also reported approximately 9.8% growth after adjustments for prior-year transaction gains, one-off provisions and tax credits. These are different comparisons, not interchangeable measures of profit growth. FY26 annual PAT grew 10.9%.
Keep quote dates and share bases consistent
An NSE peer-comparison snapshot broadcast on 4 October 2026 displayed a price of ₹731.95 and P/E of 13.88. That is a dated snapshot, not a live quote for 7 October 2026. Refresh the exchange price before calculating a valuation or dividend yield, and apply the same date and calculation method to every bank being compared.
HDFC Bank’s share capital changed after its 1:1 bonus issue in 2025. Historical per-share data—including EPS, book value and dividends—must be adjusted consistently before comparing it with post-bonus figures. The FY26 annual report and the relevant exchange filings are the places to verify the reported basis.

What do HDFC Bank’s asset-quality figures show?
At 30 June 2026, HDFC Bank reported gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of 1.17% of gross advances and net NPAs of 0.41% of net advances. The gross NPA ratio was 1.15% at 31 March 2026 and 1.40% at 30 June 2025. The direction over multiple reporting dates is more informative than one quarter alone.

The bank also reported a 0.91% gross NPA ratio excluding agricultural NPAs for June 2026. This is an adjusted presentation, not a replacement for the headline 1.17% figure. When comparing banks or periods, check what has been excluded and whether the ratio uses the same denominator.
Check provisions and credit costs
HDFC Bank’s FY26 annual report stated provision coverage of 67.2%; its Q1 FY27 credit cost ratio was 0.40%. Track both over time, along with changes in segment mix and NPAs. Ask whether reported improvement reflects durable repayments and whether provisions would remain adequate if borrowers’ finances or economic conditions weakened. Ratio definitions and reporting periods matter when comparing these measures across banks.
Are earnings, margins and funding moving in a healthy direction?
For the quarter ended 30 June 2026, net interest income (NII) increased 6.7% year over year to ₹335.3 billion. Net interest margin (NIM) was 3.26% on total assets and 3.40% on interest-earning assets; the cost-to-income ratio was 39.2%. Together, these measures help show how lending and deposit economics translate into income and operating costs. Assess trends across quarters rather than treating one result as a forecast.
Relate deposit growth and mix to loan growth
At 30 June 2026, deposits grew 14.7% year over year. CASA deposits—current and savings account balances—grew 9.4%, while time deposits grew 17.4%; CASA made up 32.3% of total deposits. Compare the pace of deposit growth with loan growth and watch whether the mix is shifting toward more expensive funding. Faster deposit growth is not automatically beneficial if it raises funding costs enough to pressure margins.

Read profitability with its reporting period
The FY26 annual report reported a 3.34% NIM and 14.3% ROE for FY26. These annual measures and the Q1 FY27 quarterly figures describe different periods; check each measure’s stated basis before drawing a trend or comparing it with another bank. ROE is especially useful beside P/B, but it should also be considered with the capital required to support future growth.
Rank #4
How much capital does the bank have to absorb losses and support growth?
At 30 June 2026, HDFC Bank reported total capital adequacy of 19.6%, Tier 1 capital adequacy of 17.8% and Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) of 17.4%. The Q1 FY27 results release cited a regulatory capital requirement of 11.9%. The reported buffer can support loss absorption and growth, but it does not eliminate credit, market, liquidity or execution risks.
When assessing whether capital supports shareholder returns, consider it with ROE and potential future capital needs. A high capital ratio by itself does not establish that returns will be attractive or that the share is appropriately priced.
How should you evaluate HDFC Bank’s dividend?
HDFC Bank stated that its FY26 total dividend would be ₹15.50 per ₹1 equity share: a ₹2.50 special interim dividend paid in August 2025 and a ₹13 final dividend recommended by the board, subject to shareholder approval at the forthcoming AGM. The NSE page later showed a ₹13 dividend with an ex-date and record date of 19 June 2026. A board recommendation, shareholder approval, record date and payment are distinct steps; check the latest official filing to confirm the status relevant to you.
Best Value
Assess the dividend against earnings, payout sustainability, capital and reinvestment needs. To calculate yield, use a contemporaneous share price and a dividend figure on the same post-bonus share basis. A high yield can result from a falling share price and does not guarantee future distributions.

On 24 March 2026, HDFC Bank issued a statement addressing the resignation of part-time chairman and independent director Atanu Chakraborty. In the statement, chairman Keki Mistry said: “Based on our discussions there were no specific happenings and practices that were brought to our attention.” This records the chairman’s account of the board’s understanding at that time; it is not an independent investigation or conclusive proof that no governance issue existed.
Review subsequent official exchange disclosures before forming a view about the current governance picture. In particular, distinguish a company’s own explanation from independent verification, and consider management continuity alongside the bank’s financial performance.
What checklist can you use before making a decision?
- Fix the comparison date. Record the exchange price date, earnings period and share basis. Refresh the quote rather than relying on the 4 October 2026 snapshot.
- Test valuation against returns. Compare P/B with ROE and capital needs; compare P/E using earnings that treat exceptional items consistently.
- Trace asset quality. Review headline gross and net NPA trends, provisions, credit cost and segment mix; label agricultural exclusions separately.
- Check earnings and funding together. Follow NII, NIM, cost-to-income, deposit growth and CASA mix over several reporting periods.
- Review resilience and distributions. Put capital ratios beside returns and future needs; verify dividend status and calculate yield only with a current price and consistent share basis.
- Read governance disclosures in sequence. Check official filings after the March 2026 statement and distinguish management’s account from independently established facts.
The FY26 annual report, Q1 FY27 results release, investor-relations results index, NSE disclosures and later exchange filings provide the relevant primary records for these checks. The quarterly accounts for the period ended 30 June 2026 were subject to a limited review by the bank’s statutory auditors; this is not the same as a full-year audit.
