A full withdrawal must pass through the network’s demand-dependent exit queue, become eligible for withdrawal, and then be sent to the validator’s configured withdrawal address. Pool and liquid-staking users may also face a provider’s redemption process or liquidity limits.
What “unstaking” means on Ethereum
Ethereum does not impose one fixed staking term with a universal unlock date. For a self-operated validator, starting an exit and receiving usable ETH are separate events. The exit rate is limited by the protocol, so the wait depends in part on how many validators are leaving. After exit, the validator must reach withdrawable status and be included in an automatic withdrawal sweep. Ethereum.org’s staking-withdrawal documentation describes this sequence; it does not promise an instant release.
Withdrawals were enabled with Shanghai/Capella on April 12, 2023. Ethereum.org says the Pectra upgrade in May 2025 added compounding validators and execution-layer-triggered exits and partial withdrawals. The available route depends on the validator’s credentials and setup.
How a full validator withdrawal works
- Check the withdrawal credentials. A validator needs credentials tied to an execution-layer withdrawal address to receive ETH. Legacy 0x00 credentials do not include that address; they must be upgraded to 0x01 or 0x02. Ethereum.org says the withdrawal address cannot be changed through a later credential update, so verify it carefully before registering it. See Ethereum’s withdrawal-credentials documentation.
- Signal the exit. The operator starts a full exit, either with a validator-key voluntary exit or, where the credentials support it, an execution-layer request. Registering withdrawal credentials by itself does not exit the validator.
- Wait for the exit queue and withdrawable status. The protocol rate-limits exits. How long this stage takes varies with network demand; there is no guaranteed wait that applies to every validator.
- Wait for the withdrawal sweep. Once the validator is withdrawable, the protocol processes eligible withdrawals in sweeps and sends the balance to its registered address. The sweep is automatic; it is not the same as immediately receiving funds when the exit is requested.
Ethereum.org says a sweep can process up to 16 withdrawals per block. Its page, updated August 17, 2026, gives 3.5 days for 400,000 withdrawals as an illustrative estimate under its stated assumptions—not a personal wait-time estimate. The same page reports more than 1.2 million validator accounts as of April 2026; that network-wide count is context, not a prediction of how long your validator will wait. Check the Ethereum Staking Launchpad withdrawal information for current protocol context, but do not treat a general illustration as a guaranteed completion date.

Reward withdrawals are not the same as unstaking
Some ETH can be swept to a withdrawal address while a validator continues staking. These partial withdrawals do not end the validator’s participation or release its remaining stake.
- Type 1 (legacy) credentials: The effective balance is capped at 32 ETH. Eligible balance above that cap is automatically sent to the withdrawal address in regular sweeps.
- Type 2 (compounding) credentials: Rewards can compound into an effective balance up to 2,048 ETH. Eligible balance above that threshold is swept automatically. To request a smaller partial withdrawal, a Type 2 operator must submit a manual execution-layer request, which costs gas.
A full exit is a separate action for either type. The rules for credential types and withdrawals are described in Ethereum.org’s withdrawal documentation.

What changes if you staked through a pool or liquid-staking provider?
If you used a pool or hold a liquid-staking token, you generally do not operate the underlying validator or control its withdrawal credentials. You usually redeem through the provider under its own process, or sell the token on a market. Provider redemption can depend on the provider’s terms and available liquidity, while the underlying validators’ protocol exit queue can also affect timing. See Ethereum.org’s overview of liquid and pooled staking, and check the current redemption procedure for the specific provider you use.

| Route | Who manages the validator? | What can affect access to ETH? |
|---|---|---|
| Self-operated validator | You or your operator manage the validator and its withdrawal credentials. | The protocol exit queue, withdrawable status, and automatic sweep. |
| Pool or liquid-staking provider | The provider or pool operators generally manage the validators. | The provider’s redemption process and liquidity, as well as the underlying validators’ exit queue. |
| Sell a liquid-staking token | The token holder trades the token rather than directly operating the validator. | Market availability and the price at which buyers are willing to trade; selling is not the same as guaranteed redemption for ETH at a fixed rate. |
What to check before requesting an exit
- Confirm whether you run a validator yourself or hold a provider-issued staking token; the withdrawal route differs.
- For a self-operated validator, verify the credential type and the registered withdrawal address before acting.
- Distinguish a partial reward sweep from a full validator exit.
- For a pool or provider, read its current redemption terms and confirm whether redemption depends on liquidity or a separate queue.
- Plan for a variable wait rather than relying on a fixed number of hours or days.
