Choose an ETH liquid staking protocol by comparing how it accounts for rewards, who controls its contracts and validators, how it handles penalties, and what it takes to exit. The liquid-staking token may be tradable or usable in DeFi while ETH is staked, but it adds contract, governance, operator, and market risks. There is no universal best choice—and a token’s market price is not the same as an immediate right to redeem ETH.
Start with what you need the token to do
Liquid staking pools ETH for Ethereum validation and issue a token linked to the pooled stake and rewards. That token can offer flexibility while the underlying ETH is staked, but it does not remove staking risk: the pool depends on its contracts, governance, validators, and the market for the token.
Set your priorities before comparing protocols. If you expect to use the token as DeFi collateral, investigate market depth, supported integrations, and liquidation risk. If you value broad operator participation, look closely at who selects operators and how they can join. If you may need ETH quickly, understand both protocol redemption and the secondary-market route.
Compare the accounting models
Liquid staking tokens do not all show rewards in the same way. Ethereum.org describes stETH as a rebasing token: rewards are reflected in a holder’s token balance. It describes rETH as an exchange-rate token: the token balance can stay constant while each token represents more ETH over time. A wallet balance alone therefore does not tell you how much value or reward has accrued.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Rebasing token: the number of tokens held can change as rewards or other adjustments are reflected.
- Exchange-rate token: the token count can remain unchanged while the ETH represented per token changes.
Check each protocol’s documentation for how it accounts for consensus rewards, execution-layer rewards, and penalties. Compare value over the same period and on the same basis rather than treating token counts as directly comparable. Ethereum.org’s pooled-staking overview explains these approaches and the associated trade-offs.
Assess the protocol’s risks and control structure
Liquid staking adds dependencies beyond holding ETH directly. Review how contracts can be upgraded, who has authority over key functions, how operators are selected, and how losses from slashing or downtime are handled. Audits and formal verification can reduce uncertainty, but neither makes a protocol risk-free.

| What to compare | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Contracts | Is the code open source? What was audited, by whom, and when? Who can upgrade contracts, and under what controls? | Contract flaws or changes can affect deposits, accounting, and withdrawals. |
| Validators and operators | Who selects operators? Is participation distributed and permissionless? Does the protocol use distributed validator technology or another fault-tolerance approach? | Concentration can create correlated downtime, censorship, or other network risks. |
| Governance and issuer control | Who can change fees, operator eligibility, oracle roles, and contract behavior? What decisions do token holders control? | Governance powers differ, and token holders may not control every decision. |
| Slashing and penalties | How are penalties or operator losses allocated, and where are those terms documented? | Staking rewards are not guaranteed, and penalties can affect the value represented by a token. |
| Market and integrations | Can you trade the token in the venues you expect to use? Is it supported by your intended DeFi application and network? | Market depth, slippage, and integration-specific risks affect what you can do with the token. |
Use current risk disclosures, governance records, audit reports, and withdrawal documentation—not an audit badge or headline claim—as the basis for comparison. Ethereum.org outlines risks including smart contracts, governance and upgrades, operator concentration, market liquidity, and slashing pass-through in its pooled-staking guidance.
Understand the two ways out
A holder may seek ETH through the protocol’s withdrawal process or sell the liquid staking token on a market. These are different routes, with different constraints.

- Protocol redemption: depends on the protocol’s rules and available liquidity, as well as Ethereum validator exit and withdrawal processes. Queues, limits, and timing conditions may apply.
- Market sale: depends on buyers, market depth, trading fees, and slippage. It may be quicker in some circumstances, but the token can trade below the value of its underlying stake.
Ethereum.org explains that validator accounts backing staking pools can exit and withdraw ETH to a designated withdrawal address, enabling redemption of the corresponding stake. That describes the validator-level mechanism; it does not promise a particular time for an individual holder’s request. Read the protocol’s current withdrawal terms and check the market you would actually use before relying on either route. Ethereum.org’s withdrawal guide describes validator withdrawals.
Look beyond the quoted yield
A displayed APR is not enough to establish which protocol will deliver the better result for you. Rates may cover different dates, reward sources, fees, or measurement periods. Compare net outcomes only when those inputs are aligned and documented.

- Identify whether the figure is gross or net and which rewards it includes.
- Check the measurement period and observation date; a short-window rate is not a forecast.
- Account for protocol fees, deposit or swap costs, gas, and any costs of using or selling the token.
- Compare the same network and route, and distinguish recurring charges from one-time fees.
Primary sources do not establish a synchronized, like-for-like current net-yield winner across protocols. Avoid treating a quoted rate as a promised return.

Lido: stETH and wstETH
Lido distinguishes protocol withdrawals from secondary-market trading. Its risk disclosure says redemption ultimately depends on Ethereum validator withdrawal and exit mechanisms and may be subject to queues, limits, and timing conditions. Lido’s governance documentation says LDO holders vote on important parameters, including fees, node operators, and oracles. Review Lido’s risk factors and governance documentation for current terms.
Rocket Pool: rETH
Rocket Pool describes rETH as an exchange-rate token whose value reflects pooled staking rewards. Exchanging rETH through protocol contracts depends on sufficient ETH liquidity in the pool; if the pool cannot cover an exit, another market route may be necessary. Rocket Pool’s documented direct-staking route page states a 0.05% deposit fee for that route, but route details and fees can change. Verify the current interface and terms before acting. See Rocket Pool’s staking overview and its direct-staking route information.
Coinbase: cbETH
Coinbase’s cbETH whitepaper identifies Coinbase as both staking provider and token issuer. That makes issuer identity and operational control part of the comparison—not just the token ticker. The whitepaper is Coinbase’s own description, not independent evidence that cbETH is safer or performs better. Read Coinbase’s cbETH whitepaper.
Quick Recap
Use a decision checklist before depositing
- Define your use case. Decide whether you want a transferable token, DeFi collateral, or a route to potentially access ETH before staking withdrawals complete.
- Read the accounting and penalty terms. Confirm whether rewards change token balances or the exchange rate, and how penalties are reflected.
- Inspect control and operator disclosures. Identify who can upgrade contracts, set key parameters, select operators, and control oracle functions.
- Check both exit routes. Review protocol withdrawal steps and constraints, then examine liquidity and likely slippage on the market you would use.
- Calculate your own net comparison. Use a consistent period and include fees, gas, and transaction costs; do not rely on an isolated APR.
- Recheck current terms and integrations. Fees, governance, liquidity, and integrations can change, so confirm them in current protocol documentation and market data before acting.
