Re:

Is HDFC Bank a Good Long-Term Investment? Key Risks to Weigh

HDFC Bank’s FY2024-25 results show profit and deposit growth, but a long-term investment case also depends on post-merger funding, margins, credit quality and the price investors pay.

HDFC Bank may merit consideration as a long-term holding, but its business performance alone cannot tell you whether its shares are a good buy at today’s price. Investors need to assess the post-merger bank’s deposit and loan growth, margins, asset quality and recurring earnings—and then compare that outlook with the current valuation. The figures below are dated results, not a forecast or a recommendation.

What the evidence says about HDFC Bank as a long-term investment

HDFC Bank is a listed Indian bank whose current business includes the former HDFC Limited mortgage lender, which merged into the bank effective July 1, 2023. That merger changed the balance sheet and makes comparisons across the merger less straightforward. FY2024-25 was the first full financial year after it.

The bank’s Integrated Annual Report 2024-25 reported higher net profit and net interest income for FY2024-25, alongside a 3.48% net interest margin and gross NPAs equal to 1.33% of gross advances as of March 31, 2025. Those results give investors useful operating evidence, but they do not establish future growth, future credit quality or an attractive share price.

The latest quarter identified in the available official materials is Q1 FY2027, ended June 30, 2026, with results materials listed in July 2026. Because quarterly results and market prices change, use the bank’s latest disclosures and a dated share-price source for any current decision.

What the FY2024-25 figures show—and what they do not

HDFC Bank’s FY2024-25 annual report provides a snapshot of the first full year after the merger. The reported figures below are historical, not projections.

Measure HDFC Bank reported figure How to read it
Net profit ₹67,347.4 crore in FY2024-25, up 10.7% year over year Profit grew, but one year’s growth does not establish a future rate of growth or the return shareholders will earn.
Net interest income ₹1,22,670.1 crore in FY2024-25, up 13.0% year over year This is income from lending and other interest-earning activity after interest expense; track it with funding costs and margins.
Net interest margin 3.48% in FY2024-25 A dated annual figure; compare later quarters and investigate changes in deposit costs, loan yields and balance-sheet mix.
Advances ₹26,19,609 crore at the FY2024-25 reporting point, up 5.4% Read loan growth alongside deposit growth and the bank’s post-merger funding position.
Deposits ₹27,14,715 crore at the FY2024-25 reporting point, up 14.1% Deposit growth exceeded advances growth in FY2024-25; the pace and cost of future deposits both matter.
Gross NPAs 1.33% of gross advances as of March 31, 2025 This is not a current-quarter assertion. Check subsequent gross and net NPA ratios, slippages, provisions and credit costs.

All figures in the table are from HDFC Bank’s Integrated Annual Report 2024-25. The bank said it deliberately moderated lending growth as it repositioned its post-merger balance sheet. Atanu Chakraborty, then chairperson, wrote in that report: “We consciously calibrated our loan growth in FY25 to reposition the balance sheet.”

Why deposits, lending and margins belong together

Funding the loan book

A bank’s ability to gather deposits affects how it funds loans and at what cost. In FY2024-25, HDFC Bank reported deposit growth of 14.1% and advances growth of 5.4%. Management described deliberate loan-growth calibration to reduce the credit-to-deposit ratio and higher-cost borrowings after the merger.

The reported credit-to-deposit ratio was 96% at March 31, 2025, down from about 110% at the time of the merger, according to the annual report. That movement is relevant to the funding transition; it does not by itself prove that integration is complete or that funding pressure has disappeared. Investors should follow deposit growth, deposit mix where disclosed, deposit costs, advances and the ratio together.

Understanding margin changes

Net interest margin (NIM) is a measure of the spread between interest earned on assets and interest paid to fund them, relative to the relevant earning-asset base. HDFC Bank’s 3.48% NIM in FY2024-25 is a historical baseline, not a forecast. A lower or higher later margin needs context: funding costs, loan yields and shifts in the balance-sheet mix can all affect it.

How to assess asset quality and earnings quality

Look beyond one NPA ratio

The 1.33% gross NPA ratio is specific to March 31, 2025. To judge whether credit quality is strengthening or weakening, compare later disclosures on gross and net NPAs, new slippages, provisions and credit costs over time. A single ratio does not show how much new stress is entering the loan book or how much protection the bank has set aside.

Separate recurring income from transaction gains

Quarterly comparisons can be distorted by trading, mark-to-market or transaction gains. HDFC Bank’s Q1 FY2027 filing, available through the company’s results disclosure hosted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), says the prior-year comparison included ₹91.3 billion in net trading and mark-to-market gains from a partial divestment in HDB Financial Services. That gain should not be treated as ordinary, repeatable operating income. When comparing periods, distinguish recurring interest and fee income from gains tied to a particular transaction.

What are the key risks for a long-term shareholder?

  • Funding and deposit mix: Deposit growth can support lending, but investors also need to watch deposit costs and mix. A high-cost funding shift can weigh on margins.
  • Margin pressure: Changes in funding costs, loan yields or balance-sheet composition may reduce net interest margin and affect earnings.
  • Credit deterioration: Higher slippages, NPAs, provisions or credit costs could weaken reported results. The March 2025 gross NPA figure needs updating with subsequent filings.
  • Merger execution: The combination brought a larger balance sheet and a funding transition. One year of post-merger results is not proof that all integration and normalization risks have passed.
  • Non-recurring earnings: Divestment or trading gains can lift a comparison period without representing repeatable performance.
  • Valuation and opportunity cost: Even a well-performing bank’s stock can disappoint if the price already assumes too much growth, or if other investments offer a better risk-adjusted opportunity.

How to decide whether the shares fit your plan

  1. Set the investment context. Define your time horizon, tolerance for losses and the role a single bank stock would play in your portfolio. This is a general decision framework, not personalized financial advice.
  2. Read current results, not just the annual snapshot. Start with HDFC Bank’s latest quarterly and annual disclosures. Compare deposits, advances, deposit costs, NIM, asset quality and capital using the same reporting periods.
  3. Test the quality of earnings. Separate recurring interest and fee income from trading, mark-to-market and transaction gains; check whether comparisons include a material one-off.
  4. Assess valuation with dated data. Compare the current share price and valuation measures with earnings power, book value, return on equity, plausible growth expectations and the risks. The annual report and results materials cited here do not establish whether the shares are attractively valued today.
  5. Compare alternatives on like-for-like terms. If considering another bank, use the same reporting period and assess deposit franchise and funding costs, loan growth, NIM, asset quality, capital, returns and valuation. Adjust for merger effects and one-off gains rather than relying on headline growth alone.

Sources and date context

The dated operating figures and management statement in this article come from HDFC Bank’s Integrated Annual Report 2024-25. The bank’s Quarterly & Annual Financial Results index lists Q1 FY2027 results materials. The prior-period HDB Financial Services gain is disclosed in HDFC Bank Limited’s Q1 FY2027 results filing hosted by the U.S. SEC. The figures are tied to the periods stated above; they should not be read as current-quarter figures or forecasts.
