To choose a U.S. spot bitcoin ETF, compare each fund’s current fees and waiver terms, benchmark and net performance, share-trading conditions, and custody disclosures. No single metric settles the choice: the available evidence does not establish a current lowest-cost or most-liquid fund, and an ETF share still carries bitcoin-price risk.

What a spot bitcoin ETF does—and what it does not do

“Bitcoin ETF” is common shorthand for a U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP). The product holds bitcoin, and its exchange-traded shares represent a beneficial interest in the trust’s assets. That structure can provide bitcoin exposure through a brokerage account without requiring you to acquire, hold, or trade bitcoin directly. It does not remove bitcoin’s volatility, the fund’s expenses, or risks tied to the fund’s operations.

The SEC’s January 10, 2024 approval allowed certain spot bitcoin ETP shares to be listed and traded. SEC Chair Gary Gensler said the agency did not approve or endorse bitcoin, and the SEC said its action did not endorse the products’ disclosed custody arrangements. A listing is not a guarantee about an asset’s safety or a fund’s custody controls.

Compare the funds on the same dated basis

Before choosing, identify the specific funds you might buy and gather current information from each fund’s latest prospectus and relevant market data. Use the same measurement dates and consistent methods wherever possible.

What to compare Record Why it matters
Fees Annual sponsor fee, effective date, waiver amount and duration, eligibility thresholds, and expenses the trust may pay A temporary waiver can make a headline rate misleading for a longer holding period.
Benchmark and tracking Exact reference rate; same-period benchmark and NAV returns; period and calculation method Funds may use different reference rates, while expenses and other liabilities affect returns.
Share liquidity Bid–ask spread, trading volume, and premium or discount to NAV, with observation time and trade size Trading conditions vary with market hours, order size, and brokerage execution.
Custody and operations Named bitcoin custodian and material custody, service-provider, and operating disclosures in the latest filing Custody arrangements are fund-specific; SEC listing approval is not an endorsement.
Structure Current creation and redemption process and other operating terms in the latest filing Mechanics can differ by product and may change over time.

Do not declare a “best” fund from mismatched dates, different return measures, or a fee snapshot that omits waiver terms. A defensible comparison requires contemporaneous issuer disclosures and market observations for the candidates you are actually considering.

Check the ongoing cost, not just the headline fee

Start with the current annual sponsor fee in the latest prospectus. Then check whether a waiver is in effect, when it expires, whether it has asset or other conditions, and which ordinary expenses the sponsor pays versus those that may be charged to the trust. If you expect to hold for years, assess the stated post-waiver rate as well as the temporary rate.

For example, an Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF filing from 2026 reports a 0.25% annualized sponsor fee after its initial waiver expired. That is a term disclosed by one issuer, not a market-wide comparison or evidence that it is currently the lowest fee. Check each candidate’s latest filing before drawing a cost conclusion; fee terms can change.

Also distinguish the sponsor fee from total product costs. Fund expenses and liabilities can affect the trust’s value and net returns. A low stated sponsor fee alone does not establish the lowest all-in cost.

Find out what “tracks bitcoin” means for each fund

Read the investment objective and note the benchmark or reference rate by its exact name. For instance, the cited Invesco Galaxy report identifies the Lukka Prime Bitcoin Reference Rate and describes an objective of reflecting spot bitcoin performance less expenses and other liabilities. Bitwise’s August 1, 2025 prospectus identifies the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant for BITB. These examples show why a general claim that a fund “tracks bitcoin” is not enough for a comparison.

To assess realized tracking, compare each fund’s NAV return with its own stated reference rate over matching dates. Use the same return convention and period for every candidate, and account for expenses when interpreting the difference. Do not compare one fund’s share-price return with another’s NAV return. If you cite tracking error, state the period and method used; a single unexplained figure is not a meaningful ranking.

The cited issuer materials do not establish a same-period, comparable tracking record across the funds. The benchmark names and objectives help you understand what each product targets, but they do not identify a current tracking winner.

Assess liquidity for the trade you plan to make

Liquidity concerns the shares you buy or sell on an exchange, not simply the bitcoin held by the trust. Check the bid–ask spread, trading volume, and whether the shares traded at a premium or discount to NAV. Look at observations around the market hours and trade size you expect to use, and consider your brokerage and order type. These conditions can change; daily NAV calculation by itself does not show that shares have a narrow spread or a deep order book.

Use dated market observations rather than a general reputation or fund-size assumption. A fund that appears liquid for a small order at one time may not offer the same execution for a larger order or under different market conditions. The available sources do not provide a comparable current spread, volume, or premium/discount dataset across funds, so they do not support naming a liquidity winner.

Read the custody and operating disclosures

In each candidate’s latest prospectus, identify the named bitcoin custodian and review how the filing describes custody accounts, key control, service providers, and risks such as operational disruption. The Invesco Galaxy filing from 2026 names Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC as its bitcoin custodian. That issuer-specific disclosure is not evidence that all spot bitcoin ETFs use the same custodian or have identical controls.

SEC listing approval does not validate or guarantee a fund’s custody arrangements. Compare what the filings actually disclose; do not treat a regulated exchange listing as a substitute for reviewing those terms, or infer an independent audit or safeguard that a filing does not establish.

Confirm the fund’s current operating mechanics

Creation and redemption arrangements are part of a fund’s structure and can affect how it operates. Check the latest filing for the terms that apply to the specific product you are considering. Bitwise’s August 1, 2025 prospectus reported regulatory approval for in-kind creation and redemption as of that date. That dated, product-specific disclosure does not establish the current terms for BITB or the mechanics of other products; verify the latest issuer filing.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Set your comparison date. Gather the latest prospectuses and issuer disclosures for the actual candidates; use market data observed at a stated date and time.
  2. Write down fee terms. Record the annual sponsor fee, any waiver and its end date or conditions, and expenses that may be charged to the trust.
  3. Identify each benchmark. Copy the reference rate’s exact name from the filing, then compare NAV returns with that rate over the same period and using the same method.
  4. Check the likely trading conditions. Review spreads, volume, and premium or discount to NAV in relation to your expected order size, timing, brokerage, and order type.
  5. Review custody and mechanics. Note the named custodian, material operating risks, and current creation/redemption terms from each fund’s latest filing.
  6. Decide which trade-offs matter to you. Compare the documented terms together; do not substitute one low fee, a benchmark name, or a fund’s size for the full assessment.
