There is no broker that is cheapest for every Indian share investor. Compare the total cost for the way you expect to use the account: buying and selling delivery shares, holding them, and any intraday or margin-funded trades you plan to make. Brokerage is only one line in the bill; demat maintenance, sale-related DP fees, and statutory or exchange charges can change the result.
What costs should you compare?
Use each broker’s current official tariff and separate its charges into these categories. A zero-brokerage offer does not mean a transaction has no costs.
- Brokerage: The broker’s fee for the specific transaction type, such as equity delivery or intraday trading. Rates and rules can differ by segment, so compare only the services you expect to use.
- Demat account maintenance (AMC): A recurring account charge that can matter especially if you buy shares and hold them. Some accounts may qualify for a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) tier; check the eligibility rules and applicable holding thresholds.
- DP charges: Depository-participant charges that may apply when shares are debited from your demat account, typically when you sell. Check whether the tariff includes a broker fee as well as a depository fee, and how charges are applied to eligible sales.
- Statutory, exchange and regulatory charges: These appear in official tariffs alongside brokerage. They are not waived just because a broker advertises zero brokerage.
- Optional-service fees: Check costs for services you may use, such as margin funding, call-and-trade, pledging or unpledging securities, and payment methods. Do not include services you will not use in your personal comparison.
Compare brokers using your own trading pattern
Estimate the cost of a realistic year rather than ranking providers by a headline rate. For each broker, use the same assumptions: how often you buy, how often you sell, the kind of trades you make, how long you hold shares, and whether you expect to use optional services. Then check how AMC eligibility and DP charges affect that scenario.
- Describe your expected use. Note whether you will mainly buy and hold, sell regularly, trade intraday, or use margin funding. Include the number and value of transactions you expect.
- Check the relevant tariff lines. Look up brokerage for those transaction types, AMC and BSDA terms, DP charges on eligible sales, statutory and exchange charges, and fees for any optional services you expect to use.
- Apply the same scenario to every provider. Use the official tariff pages, not an advertised rate alone. If a charge depends on an eligibility condition or a particular transaction, make sure your estimate reflects that condition.
- Compare the resulting annual costs and service fit. Consider platform and support needs as well as price, but do not treat claims of reliability or ease of use as established without evidence or your own assessment.
A buy-and-hold investor who sells infrequently may weigh AMC and the cost of occasional sales differently from an active seller, intraday trader, or investor using margin. There is no meaningful universal “cheapest” answer without a defined transaction pattern and account eligibility.

Official tariff examples: Groww and Zerodha
These examples illustrate why the full tariff matters; they are not a head-to-head ranking or a complete estimate for a particular order. Terms can change, so verify the live tariff and your eligibility before opening an account.
| Broker | Published tariff details | What to check for your scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Groww | Its pricing page identifies Groww Invest Tech as a SEBI-registered stock broker and depository participant. It lists statutory charges for equity delivery and a DP charge on eligible delivery sell transactions made up of a ₹16.50 Groww fee plus the depository charge. The page states an exemption for debit values below ₹100. It also lists an MTF brokerage rate and funded-amount interest charge. | Check the current displayed tariff, whether a sale meets the DP-charge conditions, and whether margin funding or its interest is relevant to you. |
| Zerodha | Its charges page lists ₹15.34 per scrip for stock-sale DP charges, with components identified on the page. For resident individual accounts, it lists BSDA AMC as free for holdings up to ₹4 lakh, ₹100 per year plus GST for holdings from ₹4 lakh to ₹10 lakh, and ₹300 per year plus GST above ₹10 lakh. It lists ₹300 per year plus GST for a non-BSDA account and says new resident individual accounts are free for the first year. | Confirm the current charges, whether you qualify for BSDA and how the holding thresholds apply to your account. The first-year statement is specific to new resident individual accounts. |
The providers’ tariff pages also show why brokerage alone is not the whole cost: the relevant total depends on the transactions, holdings, eligibility and extra services in your scenario. The figures above are each broker’s published terms, not independent estimates of a typical investor’s annual bill.

Check registration, documents and complaint options
Price matters only after you have verified that you are dealing with an appropriately registered provider and understand the account terms. SEBI’s Investor Charter advises investors to deal with SEBI-recognised market infrastructure institutions and SEBI-registered intermediaries or regulated entities.
- Verify the provider’s registration and relevant exchange membership using official sources.
- Read the account-opening documents and tariff so you understand charges, eligibility and service terms.
- Save the provider’s support and complaint details with your account records.
If an issue arises, SEBI’s grievance guidance says to approach the concerned company or intermediary first. If you remain dissatisfied, you may lodge a complaint through SCORES and follow its status. This is a route for raising and tracking a complaint, not a promise of compensation or protection against investment losses.
