The right route depends on what you are checking: use the application tracker with an ARN, Search Taxpayer for public GSTIN information, your logged-in account for your own return, or the cash ledger to confirm a payment.
Which GST status should you check?
| What you need to verify | Where to check | Identifier or access | What confirms the status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registration application progress | Services > Registration > Track Application Status | Application Reference Number (ARN), issued after submission | The application’s current status in the tracker |
| Public GSTIN registration or filing information | Search Taxpayer | GSTIN, UIN, or PAN; no login required | The taxpayer and registration details or return-filing information displayed |
| Your own return | Logged-in account’s return dashboard or history | GST Portal account and relevant return period | The return is marked “Filed”; retain its acknowledgment or reference |
| Tax payment | Payment tracking and Electronic Cash Ledger | Challan and payment details; GST Portal account for ledger records | The payment is confirmed and credited to the Electronic Cash Ledger |
How do I check my GST registration application status?
- Open the GST Portal and sign in if required for the application-related service.
- Go to Services > Registration > Track Application Status.
- Enter the ARN associated with the submitted application and review the displayed status.
A saved application that has not been submitted remains a draft; it is not a filed application and does not yet have an ARN for tracking in the same way. The GST Portal’s registration application guide describes the status as “Draft” before submission and “Pending for Validation” after submission, and directs applicants to track the ARN in the portal. Follow any clarification request or order shown against the application rather than inferring a decision from a pending status. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a single processing time that applies to every Kerala application.
How can I check whether a GST number is active?
- Open the GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer service.
- Choose the search option and enter the taxpayer’s GSTIN, UIN, or PAN.
- Review the result for identity, registration or cancellation details, status, and any return-filing information shown.
This is the no-login option for checking publicly available taxpayer information, such as a supplier’s GSTIN status. The official Search Taxpayer guide describes the available lookup fields and the details returned. Treat it as a public snapshot, not a replacement for the taxpayer’s complete account records; a public result may not provide every detail needed to resolve an issue.
How do I see if my GST return was filed?
- Log in to the GST Portal using the taxpayer’s account.
- Open the returns dashboard or return history and select the relevant return period.
- Check the return’s status and keep the acknowledgment or reference generated when filing.
The status to look for after successful filing is “Filed.” The GSTN GSTR-3B Nil Return filing guide documents that post-filing status. Use your own account’s period-specific record as the authoritative check for your return; a public Search Taxpayer result can help with a quick view but is not a substitute for that record.

How can I check my GST payment status?
- Open the GST Portal’s payment tracking or challan-related records and find the transaction using its payment details.
- Check the Electronic Cash Ledger (GST PMT-05) to see whether the amount has been credited.
A debit in your bank account alone does not establish that the GST payment has posted. The portal’s online payment FAQ says the amount is credited to the Electronic Cash Ledger after successful confirmation from the bank. If the bank shows a debit but the portal has not confirmed the transaction or credited the ledger, check the portal’s payment status and ledger records before treating it as complete.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
What to do if a status is stuck or unclear
- Keep the relevant ARN, GSTIN, return period, challan details, and bank reference together so you can identify the exact record.
- For an application, respond to any clarification request or order displayed in the portal and follow its stated directions.
- For a payment mismatch, use the portal’s payment tracking and ledger records to establish whether the transaction has posted; do not rely only on the bank debit.
- For assistance with registration, returns, or payment tasks, GSTN identifies GST Practitioners as an authorized assistance category. Its GST Portal help page points taxpayers to practitioner information; check a particular practitioner’s credentials and suitability before engaging them.
