You can use a test wallet on that network, but the available documentation does not confirm that any particular consumer wallet app supports NU7 Testnet. The documented self-hosted route uses Zebra configured for Testnet and lightwalletd; wait for lightwalletd to synchronize before connecting a wallet.
What NU7 Testnet status means for your wallet
The Zcash Foundation reported that NU7 activated on public Testnet at block 4,465,026 on 4 October 2026. Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0 was identified as the first release candidate for the upgrade, and its release notes describe NU7 support on Testnet. A release candidate and a test-network activation do not establish stable mainnet deployment or support in a consumer wallet app. Zcash Foundation’s 6 October 2026 engineering update
NU7 changes target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and adds per-pool and global limits on shielded actions. It does not introduce a new transaction format: after activation, v4 transactions are invalid while v5 and v6 remain valid. The draft deployment ZIP leaves assignment of the Mainnet activation height open, so a tentative target should not be treated as a confirmed mainnet date. ZIP 259 · NU7 deployment ZIP
Which wallet works on NU7 Testnet?
The reviewed documentation does not verify a named consumer wallet app against NU7 public Testnet. Zcash Foundation documentation lists Zashi and Ywallet as examples of wallets that use lightwalletd, but that general client context is not confirmation that either app supports this network upgrade. Before importing sensitive wallet data or sending a test transaction, ask the wallet maintainer whether the exact app version supports public Testnet after NU7 and how to select that network. lightwalletd repository

There are two broad approaches: use a wallet or service provider that confirms its Testnet support, or operate the node and light-wallet backend yourself. For either approach, establish that the wallet, backend, and node all point to Testnet. If relying on a provider, you depend on its service and configuration; self-hosting gives you control over the backend but requires operating and securing the software.
Do you need Zebra or lightwalletd?
For the documented self-hosted light-wallet setup, yes: run Zebra configured for Testnet as the node, then connect lightwalletd to it. lightwalletd provides the backend a compatible wallet uses to interact with the node. Zebra’s documentation identifies Testnet as the network to configure, and the lightwalletd setup guide requires Zebra’s JSON-RPC server to be enabled. lightwalletd developer documentation · Zebra Book

The documented NU7 path is tied to Zebra; do not assume zcashd supports this NU7 Testnet setup. These are software architecture prerequisites, not a tested click-by-click setup for a particular consumer wallet.
Set up the self-hosted route
- Install and configure Zebra for Testnet. Use the Testnet network configuration, not Mainnet. The relevant network setting and launch procedure depend on the Zebra release and operating system; follow the instructions for the version you install.
- Enable Zebra’s JSON-RPC server. Configure the RPC service for lightwalletd. The lightwalletd documentation gives port 18232 as the conventional Testnet port and says to keep the RPC endpoint bound to localhost rather than exposing it beyond your machine.
- Run lightwalletd against that Zebra node. Point its configuration to the Testnet node’s RPC endpoint. For production use, the documentation calls for a trusted certificate; its no-TLS developer invocation is not suitable production advice.
- Wait for lightwalletd to synchronize. The Zebra Book says to connect a wallet only after lightwalletd is in sync. A wallet connected earlier may not have a complete view of the chain.
- Connect only a wallet whose maintainer confirms support. Select Testnet if the wallet exposes a network choice, and confirm that the backend URL or service is the intended Testnet endpoint. Exact app menus and compatibility are not established by the cited setup documentation.
- Test with TAZ, not ZEC. Confirm the wallet and backend are on Testnet before receiving or sending test funds.
The Zebra Book describes connecting a wallet as the goal of this setup, while noting its demo client/fork combination was not tested with the current official lightwalletd. Zebra Book

How to get TAZ, and what it is worth
Testnet’s native currency is TAZ, not mainnet ZEC. The official Zcash Testnet Guide says: “Testnet coins are distinct from actual ZEC and do not have value.” It suggests asking in Zcash community support or using a faucet to obtain test coins; availability and amounts are not specified in the guide. Do not treat a Testnet balance as spendable or redeemable ZEC. Zcash Testnet Guide

- Keep Testnet funds and wallet data separate from anything you use on Mainnet. Never infer network support from a wallet’s general lightwalletd support.
- Keep Zebra’s JSON-RPC service local; do not expose it publicly. Use appropriate transport security for lightwalletd rather than a no-TLS developer setup.
- Lightwalletd is under active development and its repository says it has not received a thorough external audit. Wallet/backend combinations and privacy properties depend on the software and service you choose.
- Before importing sensitive wallet data or sending funds, get confirmation from the wallet maintainer for the exact wallet version and NU7 public Testnet.
NU7 is active on public Testnet, but the cited draft deployment material does not set a Mainnet activation height. Testnet readiness is not a signal that Mainnet has upgraded. NU7 deployment ZIP
