On a centralized exchange, inspect the spread and order-book depth, then estimate the fill by walking the book. On a decentralized exchange, request a quote for your intended swap size and review its price impact. Compare estimated execution costs, including fees, with a limit you set before trading. There is no universal spread, volume or slippage threshold that makes every ETH trade “liquid enough.”
What liquidity tells you about your trade
Liquidity is about how much you can buy or sell without moving the execution price substantially. It depends on the specific pair, venue, trade direction, order size and moment. A market may handle a small order well but give a much worse average price for a larger one. Coinbase Help describes liquidity as how quickly an asset can be bought and sold without impacting its price, and explains that slippage reflects the difference between expected and actual execution (Coinbase Help).
For a useful pre-trade check, focus on the cost of executing your own order. Trading volume and total pool value can help screen markets, but neither tells you by itself what a particular order will receive.
Check a centralized exchange order book
1. Open the exact ETH market
Select the pair you intend to trade—for example, ETH against the specific quote asset you will spend or receive—and the venue where you will place the order. Another ETH pair or another venue’s order book is not a substitute. Market data can change, so check again close to submission.

2. Measure the spread
Note the best bid, the highest current buying offer, and the best ask, the lowest current selling offer. The spread is the ask minus the bid. To express it relative to the market, calculate:
Relative spread = (ask − bid) ÷ midpoint, where midpoint = (ask + bid) ÷ 2.

A narrower spread means a smaller gap between the best displayed buy and sell prices. It describes only the top of the book, however; it does not show how much is available beyond those prices. Ndax explains the relationship between order books, spreads and slippage in its liquidity guide.
3. Look beyond the first price level
Inspect cumulative bids and asks around the midpoint. Check how much ETH or quote currency is available at progressively wider price bands on both sides. Visible depth can change, and displayed orders are not a guarantee they will remain available until your trade executes. Binance describes liquidity-analysis charts for selected USDⓈ-M and COIN-M futures pairs and eligible users; those tools should not be assumed to cover every ETH spot pair or account (Binance).

4. Estimate the fill for your order size
A market buy consumes asks from the lowest price upward. A market sell consumes bids from the highest price downward. Walk through the available levels until the planned amount is filled, then calculate the volume-weighted average execution price. Compare that average with a reference price, such as the midpoint, to estimate price movement before fees. A tight spread can still conceal a shallow book just beyond the best bid or ask.
Repeat the calculation for a sell if you may need to exit quickly. Liquidity can be asymmetric: the buy side may have more depth than the sell side, or vice versa. CoinMarketCap’s exchange-pair Liquidity Score methodology uses selected order sizes and simulated buys and sells to assess slippage on both sides; it is a comparative signal, not a replacement for checking your own order size (CoinMarketCap Support).

5. Add trading fees
Include the venue’s current trading fee in your estimated cost. Fee schedules vary by venue and may depend on account or trading conditions, so check the exchange’s own current fee information rather than relying on a general fee figure.

A decentralized exchange (DEX) swap may not use a conventional central limit order book. Instead, request a route quote for the exact token pair and input amount. Review the expected output and the displayed price impact; where the interface provides a no-impact or spot reference, compare the quote with it. Include the swap fee and network transaction cost when assessing the total cost.

Pool size or total value locked is not a stand-alone pass/fail test. A route may use more than one pool, and the liquidity available at the quoted price may differ from a headline pool total. S&P Global explains that DEX slippage compares expected with actual token output and that a trade large relative to pool size can cause greater deviation (S&P Global).
As a dated illustration—not a current market claim—S&P Global reported that a Uniswap v3 USDC-ETH pool had a total size of $158.8 million as of March 24, 2025. That figure alone does not establish the slippage any particular swap would incur.
Compare venues or routes on equal terms
When comparing alternatives, hold the pair, direction, notional amount and observation time constant, and use equivalent fee assumptions. For centralized exchanges, compare the relative spread, depth near the midpoint, estimated book-walk cost and trading fee. For a DEX route, compare the quoted price impact, swap fee and network transaction cost. The metrics describe different execution mechanisms, but the practical question is the same: what is the estimated total cost for this order?
A published liquidity score or volume figure can help narrow down options, but its meaning depends on the publisher’s method and the sizes tested. Current, size-specific quotes and depth are more directly relevant to the trade you are about to place. Set a trade-specific go/no-go limit
Decide in advance how much spread, price movement and total execution cost you are willing to accept for this trade. If the estimated cost exceeds your limit, consider reducing the order size, splitting it, choosing another venue or route, or not trading. Recheck the quote or book before submitting: displayed depth and route prices can change, and no single daily-volume or spread cutoff proves that every ETH pair is sufficiently liquid.
