Research Nvidia and other AI chip companies by separating three questions: whether demand is translating into business results, whether each company can deliver what customers need, and whether the share price already assumes too much. Start with current filings, identify each company’s place in the AI computing value chain, and compare financial results and valuation using aligned dates and definitions. This is a research framework, not a buy or sell recommendation.

Start with the latest quarterly filing

A company’s latest Form 10-Q is the best place to check what has changed since its annual report. Read the management discussion alongside the financial statements and notes; a revenue increase alone does not tell you what drove it, whether it is sustainable, or what the company had to commit to deliver it.

NVIDIA’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, filed August 26, 2026, says Blackwell accounted for most system shipments, Vera Rubin shipments began in the third quarter, and the company was experiencing supply constraints. Treat these as company disclosures about the period and its expectations, not independent confirmation of future demand or execution.

In that filing, NVIDIA also reported $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026, up from $119 billion in the prior quarter. These are commitments made to secure supply and capacity, not revenue, backlog, or guaranteed sales. Read the associated explanation and risks: commitments can become costly if demand estimates, customer deployments, or market conditions change.

For the quarter, examine product and segment performance, management’s explanation of changes, inventory, supply arrangements, customer dependencies, and new guarantees or long-term obligations. Note the fiscal period covered and distinguish results already reported from forward-looking statements.

Use the annual report to understand the business and its risks

NVIDIA’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended January 25, 2026, filed February 25, 2026, provides the annual baseline. Read the business description, management discussion, financial statements and notes, risk factors, and market-risk disclosures together. NVIDIA’s investor-relations annual reports and proxies archive lists this report and earlier filings.

  • Revenue and margins: Track revenue mix, growth, gross margin, and operating margin. Look for explanations of product mix, pricing, costs, and changes in demand.
  • Cash generation: Compare operating cash flow with reported earnings, and review capital spending and free cash flow using a consistent definition.
  • Inventory and obligations: Check inventory, purchase commitments, guarantees, and other contractual obligations. Consider how they might affect results if demand or delivery timing changes.
  • Customer and geographic exposure: Review disclosed concentrations, end-market dependencies, and geographic or regulatory risks rather than assuming demand is broadly diversified.
  • Share-based compensation: Include it when assessing operating costs and diluted share count; it can affect both reported profitability and the ownership represented by each share.

NVIDIA says in its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K that semiconductor supply lead times may extend beyond 12 months. That is a disclosed risk about extended lead times, not a current estimate for every component. Use it to understand the potential duration of supply constraints, not to infer a delivery date.

Map each company to its role in AI computing

“AI chip supplier” covers businesses with different economics and risks. Before comparing companies, identify what they sell and where they sit in the value chain. Do not label a company a direct Nvidia supplier unless its own filing establishes that relationship.

Value-chain role What to investigate Why it matters
Accelerator design and software ecosystem Product roadmaps, performance and software positioning as described by the company, customer alternatives, and the ability to ship systems at scale. Demand for a chip depends on more than its design: software, system integration, availability, and customer adoption also matter.
Custom silicon and networking Customer concentration, design engagements, product transitions, and how much reported business is tied to AI-related demand. Custom designs may serve specific customer needs, but exposure and bargaining power can differ from those of a merchant chip designer.
Wafer fabrication Manufacturing capacity, process and geographic exposure, capital spending, customer mix, and utilization. A foundry’s results depend on manufacturing demand and investment, not only on the success of any one chip designer.
Memory and advanced packaging Capacity, lead times, customer dependence, investment requirements, and the role of these components in complete systems. Constraints in components or packaging can limit system shipments even when demand for accelerators is strong.
Complete systems System shipments, integration capability, supply availability, and customers’ ability to install and operate infrastructure. Customers need deployable infrastructure, not just individual chips, to put AI capacity into service.

AMD’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 27, 2025, filed February 4, 2026, discusses its AI GPU roadmap and reliance on TSMC for production at certain advanced nodes. That makes AMD’s manufacturing exposure relevant to an AI-chip comparison, but it does not make AMD and NVIDIA identical businesses. TSMC’s 2025 annual report is a primary source for examining the foundry business. Broadcom’s investor-relations annual-reports and financial-reports index provides its 2025 annual report and lists 2026 quarterly filings for researching custom-silicon and other exposures.

Compare financial resilience on a like-for-like basis

For each company, collect the same measures for comparable fiscal periods where possible. Fiscal years, segment definitions, and accounting presentations differ, so label them rather than combining figures as if they covered the same period.

AMD’s 2025 annual filing warns that semiconductor markets are cyclical and exposed to technology shifts, supply-demand changes, price erosion, and economic weakness. Apply that lens across the industry: an AI-related growth opportunity does not remove ordinary semiconductor-cycle risks or make every company’s revenue equally dependent on AI.

Check whether customers can deploy what they buy

Chip demand becomes revenue only when products can be supplied, purchased, and deployed. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2027 second-quarter filing identifies customer readiness—including land, power, data-center shells, and financing—as a factor in the buildout of AI infrastructure. It warns that shortages or delays in these resources can affect future revenue and financial performance, and that customers may delay purchases when infrastructure or capital is unavailable.

NVIDIA’s filing states: “The availability of land, power, shell, and capital is crucial to support the buildout of a full data center inclusive of NVIDIA AI infrastructure by our customers and partners, and any shortage of these or other necessary resources could impact our future revenue and financial performance.” This is NVIDIA management’s own risk disclosure in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026—not an independent forecast.

For other companies, look in their filings for their own customer concentration, capacity plans, manufacturing reliance, product-transition risks, and capital intensity. A supplier’s prospects can depend on a small number of customers or on investment decisions beyond its control.

Evaluate valuation with dated, consistent inputs

A company can execute well and still be a disappointing investment if its share price already assumes exceptional growth. Valuation is date-sensitive: record the date for every market input and use the same date across the companies you compare.

  1. Record share price and diluted shares, then calculate market capitalization using those stated inputs.
  2. Calculate enterprise value using a clearly stated method, including the relevant cash and debt figures.
  3. Choose earnings, revenue, and free-cash-flow periods and definitions. Label trailing results and forward estimates separately.
  4. Compare measures such as price-to-earnings, enterprise-value-to-sales, and free-cash-flow yield only when dates, periods, and definitions align.
  5. Test scenarios: ask how the valuation changes if growth slows, margins compress, or deployment is delayed. Make clear which assumptions are yours rather than company guidance.

Do not treat company guidance or forward-looking statements as guaranteed outcomes. If using analyst estimates, identify their date and basis; do not mix stale estimates with current prices or present estimates as reported results.

Build a company-specific risk checklist

  • NVIDIA: Can it meet demand amid supply constraints? What obligations has it taken on to secure supply and capacity? Can customers finance and complete the infrastructure needed to deploy systems? What competition, export restrictions, or other regulatory risks does the relevant filing disclose?
  • Other chip designers: How strong are alternatives, including customers’ internal designs? What do filings say about product roadmaps, software or ecosystem position, customer concentration, and access to manufacturing?
  • Foundries and other suppliers: How much capital and capacity are required? Which customers, processes, geographies, or product transitions matter most? What risks arise from cyclical demand or reliance on other companies?

Keep the evidence hierarchy clear: filed financial statements describe reported results; management discussion explains the company’s view of those results; guidance and risk disclosures describe expectations and uncertainties. None, by itself, establishes what a share is worth or what return an investor will earn.

Turn the research into a decision, not a prediction

Before investing, write down the business thesis, the assumptions behind expected growth and margins, and the evidence that would weaken the thesis. Then compare that view with the valuation calculated from dated inputs. If the case depends on uninterrupted demand, perfect execution, or customers building infrastructure on schedule, test what happens when one of those assumptions fails. This process helps distinguish a promising industry from a stock whose price may leave little room for setbacks.
