It is a controlled production process, not simply liquid bitumen poured over stone. The exact temperatures and sequence vary with the mix design and plant type.
How asphalt becomes paving mix
Aggregate provides the mineral skeleton of the pavement; the heated binder coats the particles and binds them together. Plant production controls the materials’ proportions, moisture, temperature, and mixing so the finished material has the specified composition and can be placed and compacted at the job site. The Asphalt Paving Handbook describes the production sequence as material handling, drying and heating, dust collection, mixing, and storage.
- Feed and proportion materials. Aggregate from stockpiles enters cold-feed bins, which meter different sizes or types of stone in the proportions required by the mix design. Binder is kept in insulated, heated tanks so it remains pumpable; the plant meters it into production along with any specified additives.
- Dry and heat the aggregate. Aggregate travels through a sloped, rotating dryer. A burner produces hot gases, and flights inside the drum lift and drop the stone through those gases. This removes moisture and heats the aggregate to the temperature needed for mixing. Wetter aggregate takes more energy and time to dry, so the plant may need to reduce its feed rate.
- Collect dust and fines. Dryer exhaust carries fine particles out of the drum. Collectors capture this material; fines that belong in the mix design can be returned to production while the exhaust is treated. Dust collection therefore supports both mix consistency and control of dust leaving the plant.
- Blend binder and aggregate. The heated binder is fluid enough to pump and coat the hot, dry particles. The mixing sequence depends on whether the plant is a batch or drum-mix system.
- Store and dispatch the mix. The completed mixture is held and dispensed for transport to paving work. It must remain within conditions that allow it to be placed and compacted as specified.
Batch and drum-mix plants: what differs?
Both plant types handle, proportion, dry, heat, and mix materials. Their central difference is whether production proceeds in separate batches or continuously.
| Feature | Batch plant | Drum-mix plant |
|---|---|---|
| Production flow | Discrete batches | Continuous production |
| Aggregate after drying | Screened into size fractions and held in hot bins | Continues through the drum in the production flow |
| Where materials are mixed | Aggregate fractions and binder are weighed and mixed in a pugmill | Drying and binder blending occur continuously in the drum; some configurations use a separate continuous mixer |
A batch plant’s screening and separate weighing allow it to assemble each batch from hot aggregate fractions. A drum-mix plant combines materials in a continuous stream. Neither arrangement guarantees better mix by itself: the plant’s configuration, material handling, and process control determine whether it produces the specified mixture.

How hot does asphalt get at the plant?
Binder and aggregate are heated for different reasons. Binder needs to be fluid enough to pump and coat particles; aggregate needs to be dry and hot enough to accept the binder and bring the mixture to its target temperature. Aggregate temperature is a major control on the resulting mix temperature.
The Asphalt Paving Handbook gives these typical figures; they are guidance for the stated contexts, not universal plant settings:
| Temperature | What the handbook says it applies to |
|---|---|
| 300–350°F (150–180°C) | Typical asphalt-binder storage range, depending on binder type |
| 265–300°F (130–150°C) | Typical mixing range for standard dense-graded mixtures made with neat, unmodified binder |
| 350°F (180°C) | Mixing temperature the handbook advises not to exceed, to avoid excessive binder aging |
| 250°F (121°C) | A handbook example of a temperature warm-mix foaming can achieve in some instances; it is not a general warm-mix target |
The handbook’s production guidance is to mix at the lowest temperature that fully dries and coats the aggregate and produces satisfactory workability, taking binder-supplier guidance and project conditions into account. Excessive heat can age binder, create unnecessary fumes and odors, increase draindown in some mixtures, make a mix tender or unstable during compaction, and add cost and emissions.
Can asphalt plants use recycled asphalt?
Yes. Plants can reuse reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), which contains aggregate and aged binder. Its moisture and material characteristics affect how it can be heated and incorporated. A common approach uses heat from superheated virgin aggregate to warm RAP and drive off moisture; equipment design and dust-collection and emissions controls also affect the feasible process.

Why the feed method matters
In a batch plant using a weigh-box recycling technique, the handbook says RAP percentages above 25% are rare in day-to-day field conditions. That is a method-specific practical observation, not a universal maximum: moisture and the heat needed to warm RAP can constrain production. In a counterflow drum arrangement, feeding RAP downstream of the burner can help protect its aged binder from direct combustion gases. The workable amount depends on the material and plant setup.

Collectors downstream of the dryer remove fine dust from exhaust, and captured fines may be returned when they are part of the designed aggregate gradation. The handbook describes this equipment as a means of controlling plant-produced dust. It does not establish the permit conditions or full air-pollution compliance requirements for any particular location; those depend on the applicable jurisdiction and facility.
