RPM International is the most diversified specialty-products business of the three, with significant construction-products and consumer businesses; PPG organizes a broad global coatings portfolio around product and end-market groups; and Sherwin-Williams stands out for its company-operated paint-store network. Their businesses overlap, but their segments and sales channels are not directly equivalent.

How the three companies differ

Company Current reporting segments Portfolio emphasis Distribution and customer angle
RPM International Construction Products Group; Performance Coatings Group; Consumer Construction systems and repair products, specialty and high-performance coatings, and branded consumer paints and related products. Its portfolio also includes roofing systems, sealants, adhesives, and selected food, industrial, restoration, and specialty businesses. Construction products serve contractors, manufacturers, distributors, and end users. Consumer products include paints, sealants, woodcare, and other home-improvement products. RPM fiscal 2026 Form 10-K.
PPG Global Architectural Coatings; Performance Coatings; Industrial Coatings Architectural paints and related products; automotive refinish, aerospace, protective and marine coatings, and traffic solutions; plus OEM coatings, packaging, and specialty applications. A multinational manufacturer serving construction, consumer, industrial, transportation, and aftermarket markets. PPG says it operates in more than 50 countries. Sherwin-Williams Paint Stores Group; Consumer Brands Group; Performance Coatings Group Architectural paint and coatings; branded and private-label consumer and wood products; and industrial, automotive refinish, protective and marine, coil, and packaging coatings. Company-operated specialty paint stores are a defining channel. Consumer Brands sells through retail and dealers; Performance Coatings also uses company branches, sales staff, and third-party distributors. Sherwin-Williams 2025 Form 10-K.

These are each company’s own reporting categories, not a normalized industry taxonomy. RPM’s construction and performance-coatings groups share end markets with businesses at PPG and Sherwin-Williams, but RPM also includes specialty products beyond conventional paints and coatings. PPG’s segments span multiple regions and end uses. Sherwin-Williams’ company-owned retail presence makes its route to market especially visible.

What RPM’s current segment mix says

RPM’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K reports three segments following a realignment effective June 1, 2025. The company’s approximate consolidated-sales shares under that structure are:

  • Construction Products Group: approximately 39% of consolidated sales.
  • Performance Coatings Group: approximately 27%.
  • Consumer: approximately 34%.

The change matters when comparing periods: RPM previously reported four segments, so older segment labels or proportions should not be treated as directly comparable with the current three-segment structure. The percentages describe RPM’s own fiscal-year segment mix; they do not establish a comparable revenue ranking against PPG or Sherwin-Williams.

How distribution changes the comparison

RPM: construction channels plus consumer brands

RPM’s construction products reach contractors, manufacturers, distributors, and end users, while its consumer products include branded paints and home-improvement lines such as sealants and woodcare. That combination is one reason a paint-only description misses part of RPM’s business.

PPG: broad manufacturing reach

PPG’s portfolio covers architectural coatings as well as products for industrial, transportation, aerospace, marine, and aftermarket uses. Its reported global reach and varied end markets make it a broad coatings manufacturer, rather than a business defined primarily by one retail channel.

Sherwin-Williams: a large owned-store network

Sherwin-Williams reported 4,853 company-operated specialty paint stores in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean region at December 31, 2025. The stores serve contractors and do-it-yourself homeowners. The company also sells consumer brands through retail and dealer channels, and uses branches, sales staff, and third-party distributors for Performance Coatings.

What the reported scale figures do—and do not—show

PPG reported net sales of $15.875 billion for calendar 2025, and Sherwin-Williams reported net sales of $23.5743 billion for calendar 2025. These are company-reported figures for years ended December 31. RPM’s cited fiscal 2026 year ended May 31, 2026, and the evidence here does not establish a matching total-sales figure for RPM; a three-company revenue ranking would therefore not be a like-for-like comparison.

Segment revenue also needs care. Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 segment figures include substantial transfers from Consumer Brands to Paint Stores, so the segment amounts should not be added as if each represented separate external sales. More generally, segment names and reporting boundaries are company-specific, not interchangeable measures of the same businesses.

Which distinction matters most?

  • For portfolio breadth beyond coatings: RPM combines specialty construction products and consumer goods with performance coatings.
  • For a global coatings portfolio organized across varied end uses: PPG reports architectural, performance, and industrial coatings businesses.
  • For an owned retail route to market: Sherwin-Williams’ Paint Stores Group and extensive company-operated store network are central differentiators.

This is a comparison of business mix and distribution, not a claim that the companies’ products are interchangeable or investment advice.
