A Kia Forte entered an active construction zone on northbound I-275 south of I-4 in Tampa early November 11, 2023, and struck a digital arrow board and a marked Florida Highway Patrol vehicle, according to FOX 13 Tampa Bay. The Kia’s driver and passenger were reported seriously injured; a trooper was also injured and hospitalized.
What happened in the I-275 construction zone crash?
FOX 13 Tampa Bay reported that the crash occurred at about 4:43 a.m. on November 11, 2023, on northbound I-275 south of I-4 in Tampa. Citing the Florida Highway Patrol, the report said the Kia Forte drove over traffic cones into an active construction zone, hit a digital arrow board, and then struck a marked FHP vehicle.
Who was injured?
- The 24-year-old Kia driver, a man from Lakeland, was reported taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
- The 25-year-old passenger, from Ocala, was also reported taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
- The 28-year-old trooper was injured and taken to a local hospital. FOX 13 did not specify the severity of the trooper’s injuries.
What was known about impairment and the investigation?
At the time FOX 13 published its report on November 11, authorities reportedly suspected the Kia driver was impaired. The report said he had not been charged, toxicology results were pending, and the investigation was ongoing. Suspicion is not proof, and that report does not establish any later charge, test result, or final investigative outcome.
