That can make overseas meals, hotels, and other foreign-currency purchases cost more in dollars. For an investor holding an unhedged foreign-currency investment, the same shift can increase its dollar value if the foreign currency strengthens against the dollar—but it does not guarantee an investment gain.
What does a weaker dollar mean for a trip abroad?
For a purchase priced in a foreign currency, the exchange rate helps determine its dollar cost. If one dollar buys fewer units of the destination’s currency, a fixed foreign-currency price converts to more dollars, before any card or other payment fees. The relevant rate is the one for the destination currency and transaction date, not a broad headline about the dollar.
For example, suppose a hotel night costs 200 units of a foreign currency. If the exchange rate moves from 10 units per dollar to 8, the same room converts from $20 to $25, before fees. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a current rate or forecast.
Use the right exchange-rate quote
Federal Reserve tables generally show foreign-currency units per U.S. dollar, except where indicated. Under that convention, a larger number means a dollar buys more of that currency; a smaller number means it buys less. Check the table’s heading and any currency-specific exception before interpreting a figure. The Fed’s monthly G.5 release reports exchange rates, not a live quote. Its broad dollar index weights currencies of major U.S. trading partners, so it provides context rather than the exact rate for a particular destination.

Include how you pay
A card’s final dollar charge can reflect the network’s conversion method and any foreign-transaction fee in the account agreement. The CFPB explains that card networks calculate a dollar amount for foreign-currency transactions using a government-mandated or wholesale rate in effect when the network processes the transaction; conversion rates may come from sources outside the issuer’s and a third party’s control. Check your card’s current terms for the fee and conversion method rather than assuming a universal charge or a fee-free transaction. See the CFPB’s Regulation Z guidance on finance charges and its foreign-transaction fee explanation.
How can a weaker dollar affect international investments?
For an unhedged foreign-currency holding, its dollar value depends on both the holding’s value in its local currency and the exchange rate used to convert it. All else equal, a foreign currency that strengthens against the dollar increases the dollar value of a given foreign-currency amount. A security’s local price can also rise or fall, and costs, distributions, and relevant taxes affect the investor’s total return. Currency movement is one component, not a forecast.

The SEC cautions that exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce a U.S. investor’s return. A foreign investment can rise in its home market yet be worth less in dollars after currency changes. Conversely, a currency move favorable to the investor does not prevent the investment itself from losing value. Read the SEC’s International Investing overview for the broader risks.
Ways U.S. investors may get foreign exposure
International exposure can come through American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), U.S.-registered mutual funds or ETFs, U.S.-traded foreign stocks, or direct trading on foreign markets. ADRs represent foreign shares, or a fraction or multiple of shares; their prices correspond to home-market stock prices adjusted for the ADR-to-share ratio. Funds may offer broader diversification than an individual investor can achieve alone, but their holdings, costs, and risks vary.

Check more than currency exposure
International investments can involve higher transaction costs, additional taxes such as dividend withholding, differing disclosure and accounting practices, reduced liquidity, and possible foreign-currency controls. Market, political, legal, and information risks also matter. A broad description of international investing cannot establish whether a particular fund hedges currency exposure or how much currency movements may affect its returns. For a specific fund, check its current prospectus for holdings, hedging policy, fees, and risks. The SEC’s international investing guidance discusses these considerations.
What a broad dollar measure can—and cannot—tell you
A trade-weighted index summarizes movement against a basket of currencies; it does not show what a traveler will pay in a particular country or precisely how a specific investment will perform. The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report said its broad dollar index had increased modestly on net since the beginning of 2026 through its reporting period, despite volatility, and that the dollar remained strong in real terms relative to its historical average. The report’s data ended July 2, 2026, so that is a dated description, not a live assessment. Its July 2026 report explains the index and its historical context.

The Federal Reserve says neither it nor the Treasury targets a particular exchange-rate level: “The value of the dollar is determined in foreign exchange markets, and neither the U.S. Treasury nor the Federal Reserve targets a level for the exchange rate.” The FAQ containing that statement was updated July 11, 2024. - If you are planning travel: identify the destination currency, compare its rate against the dollar for the dates that matter, and account for the payment method’s conversion process and stated fees.
- If you are reviewing an investment: identify the underlying markets and currencies, whether the product hedges currency exposure, and its fees, liquidity, and other risks. Use the current prospectus for product-specific details.
- If you are interpreting a dollar index or rate table: check the date, currency pair or basket, and quote convention. Monthly data and broad indexes are context, not personalized prices or forecasts.
The dollar’s international role does not determine an individual trip’s cost or an investment’s return. In a 2024 speech, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher J. Waller cited approximately 60 percent of international banking loans and deposits as denominated in dollars, and approximately 70 percent of international debt securities issued in a currency other than the issuer’s home currency as denominated in dollars. Those figures describe the dollar’s international role, not the likely size of a travel-cost change or an investment gain.
