To apply for a business loan in India, first decide whether you need a term loan, working capital or both; check your MSME/Udyam details; and ask your chosen bank for its current document checklist. Submit the application through that bank and keep its acknowledgement number. The bank assesses the request under its own credit policy—MSME status or a complete application does not guarantee approval.

1. Decide what kind of finance your business needs

“SME” is common in everyday usage, but Indian government and banking rules generally use “MSME” or “MSE.” Start by describing what the funds will pay for and how the business expects to repay them.

  • Term loan: Consider this for a defined asset, expansion or project, with repayment over an agreed period.
  • Working-capital facility: Consider this for recurring operating needs, such as managing the gap between paying suppliers and receiving customer payments.
  • Combined requirement: Ask whether the bank can assess a term loan and working capital together. Indian Bank’s 2025–26 MSME policy describes a composite loan for micro and small enterprises, but that is one bank’s policy, not a universal product.

If the immediate issue is an unpaid business invoice, receivables discounting through TReDS may be more relevant than a conventional term loan. The Ministry of Finance describes TReDS as an operationalized route intended to address delayed payments to MSMEs. Ministry of Finance, Government of India, March 11, 2025.

2. Check your MSME status and Udyam details

Being described as an SME does not by itself establish eligibility for MSME classification or a bank loan. Verify the business’s Udyam Registration Certificate and current category before applying. Indian Bank’s 2025–26 policy says it obtains a Udyam Registration Certificate from existing and new MSME enterprises.

That bank policy lists the following classification ceilings. These are figures in Indian Bank’s 2025–26 policy, not a substitute for checking current government rules and the enterprise’s Udyam record:

Category Investment ceiling Turnover ceiling
Micro ₹2.5 crore ₹10 crore
Small ₹25 crore ₹100 crore
Medium ₹125 crore ₹500 crore

These figures are reported in Indian Bank’s 2025–26 Loan Policy for Domestic Branches, Annexure IV. Confirm prevailing classification criteria and your certificate details through official Udyam information before relying on a category.

3. Ask the bank for its current checklist

There is no single nationwide application file established by the official sources cited here. The Ministry of Finance says banks have been advised to provide an indicative checklist when an MSME borrower applies: “Banks have been advised to furnish the MSME borrowers with an indicative checklist of documents required for processing the loan application at the time of applying for the loan.” The statement appears in the Ministry’s March 11, 2025 release.

Ask the lender for the checklist that matches your legal structure, requested amount and facility type before gathering documents. As a preparation prompt—not a universal mandatory list—you can ask whether it needs:

  • Identity and legal-constitution records for the business and relevant owners or partners.
  • Udyam details and other registrations relevant to the business.
  • Tax filings, financial statements and bank account statements.
  • Cash-flow estimates and details of the proposed use of funds.
  • Project plans, supplier quotations or asset estimates for a term loan.
  • Security or guarantee documents, if applicable to the proposed facility.

Use the lender’s checklist as the authority on what to submit. Document requirements can differ by bank, product and application.

4. Submit the application and keep its reference number

Complete the bank’s application forms and provide the requested information about the business, borrowing purpose and repayment capacity. Indian Bank, for example, links to an online MSME loan application and application forms on its MSME page; other banks may use different channels.

  1. Submit through the bank’s stated online or physical application channel.
  2. Keep the acknowledgement and unique application serial number. RBI directions call for application tracking, acknowledgement and status communication for physical and online applications.
  3. Use the bank’s stated channel to check status and respond promptly to appraisal questions or requests for additional material.

RBI’s Master Direction on Lending to the MSME Sector also says banks should communicate the main reasons in writing when rejecting an application.

5. Understand appraisal, timing and collateral

A bank decides whether to lend under its board-approved policy, applicable requirements and the loan agreement. The Ministry of Finance describes credit-related matters as largely deregulated. As a result, these sources do not establish one nationwide minimum turnover, credit score, interest rate, margin, tenure or approval formula. MSME classification is not a promise of credit: RBI’s priority-sector classification of bank loans to MSMEs is a lending classification, not an individual borrower’s entitlement to a loan.

Decision-time guidance depends on the application amount and bank:

Application Published decision-time guidance
MSE application up to ₹25 lakh RBI guidance says the decision should take no more than 14 working days. The Ministry of Finance repeated this advice on March 11, 2025.
Above ₹25 lakh RBI says the bank’s board-approved norms apply. Indian Bank’s 2025–26 policy states six weeks for applications above ₹25 lakh.

These are decision timelines, not guarantees of approval or disbursement by a particular date. The relevant guidance appears in the Ministry of Finance release, the RBI Master Direction and Indian Bank’s 2025–26 policy.

The Ministry’s March 11, 2025 release says scheduled commercial banks are mandated not to accept collateral security for MSE loans up to ₹10 lakh. Do not assume that this rule removes every other security or guarantee condition, or applies in the same way to larger loans. For other cases, ask the bank in writing what security it requires.

The same release reports guidance that working-capital requirements for MSE units borrowing up to ₹5 crore be computed at a minimum of 20% of projected annual turnover. This is reported guidance, not a guaranteed credit limit or an obligation to approve a facility.

6. Ask whether CGTMSE cover may apply

CGTMSE is jointly set up by the Ministry of MSME and SIDBI to facilitate institutional credit to micro and small enterprises. It does not independently approve a borrower’s loan. The borrower approaches a member lending institution (MLI), and the lender makes the credit decision under its appraisal process.

  1. Ask the bank whether it is a CGTMSE member and whether the proposed business and facility may qualify under current terms.
  2. The member lender processes the request and decides whether to sanction and disburse the loan.
  3. After sanction or disbursement, the lender—not the borrower—applies to CGTMSE for guarantee coverage.
  4. CGTMSE issues cover to the lender after approval and receipt of the applicable fee.

Check the current member-lender list and scheme terms on CGTMSE’s official site. Guarantee cover is not a grant to the borrower and does not compel a bank to approve a loan or mean that every applicant can borrow without collateral.

CGTMSE reported ₹13.67 lakh crore in cumulative guarantees approved and 322 member lending institutions registered under CGS-I and CGS-II, both as of March 31, 2026. Those figures indicate scheme scale; they do not measure an individual applicant’s likelihood of approval. CGTMSE.

7. Compare written offers before accepting

If more than one bank makes an offer, compare the written terms rather than relying on a headline rate or verbal estimate. Ask each bank for its offer and current schedule of charges, then check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the facility covers a term-loan need, working capital or both.
  • Sanctioned amount and any borrower contribution or margin.
  • Interest basis and how often the rate can reset.
  • Processing, service and guarantee-related fees.
  • Repayment schedule, tenure and any conditions tied to early repayment.
  • Collateral, personal guarantees and any CGTMSE availability.
  • Conditions that must be met before disbursement.

These are comparison questions, not standardized terms. The bank’s written sanction and agreement govern the facility. Indian Bank’s policy also lists PMMY categories—Shishu, Kishor, Tarun and Tarun Plus—but eligibility and terms must be checked against current scheme and lender guidance; not every MSME request necessarily fits PMMY. Indian Bank’s 2025–26 policy.
