Before sending USDC, USDT, or another stablecoin, verify the full recipient address against a trusted source, confirm the exact token and network are accepted, and review the wallet’s final transaction summary. A matching ticker or a familiar-looking address is not enough: once a blockchain transfer is confirmed, it generally cannot be reversed by the wallet issuer.
1. Get the address from a trusted source
Use the address supplied directly by the intended recipient or a previously verified address-book entry. Do not choose a recipient solely from recent transaction history: address-poisoning attempts can place attacker-controlled lookalike addresses in that history.
Compare the entire address, not just its first and last characters. A wallet may truncate the address on screen; open its full-address view or compare it character by character with the trusted original. The FBI Denver Field Office advises: “To protect yourself, check the entire cryptocurrency address to ensure it fully matches the address where you want to send funds.” Its April 26, 2024 advisory describes a Colorado victim who lost $2.1 million in a stablecoin investment scam involving impersonation tokens. That is one reported incident, not a measure of how common address poisoning is.
2. Confirm the exact stablecoin and network
Ask the recipient which exact asset and network they accept. USDC or USDT on one network is not automatically interchangeable with a similarly named version on another. Verify both ends of the transfer support the selected combination; address validity alone does not establish compatibility.

Avalanche Support explains that distinct versions of stablecoins may exist on Avalanche and Ethereum and warns that sending an incompatible version directly can result in permanent loss. A small test transfer does not make an unsupported network compatible.
3. Verify the token identity where relevant
Do not rely on a token’s displayed name or ticker alone. Token names and symbols can be copied. On Solana, check the mint address against an authoritative issuer or network source; Solana’s production-readiness guidance warns that spoofed tokens may use the same name and symbol as legitimate tokens but have a different mint.

- Recipient: the complete destination address matches the trusted address.
- Asset and network: the exact stablecoin representation and chain match what the recipient accepts.
- Amount: the amount the recipient will receive is correct.
- Fee and total: the network fee and total debit are acceptable.
Tether Wallet documents a pre-approval summary that includes the amount sent and network fee, and states: “Once confirmed, transactions cannot be reversed.” Other wallets may use different labels or show different fields, so inspect the actual confirmation screen rather than assuming it works like Tether Wallet. See Tether Wallet’s guidance.
5. Decide whether to send a test transfer
For a substantial payment to a new address, a small test transfer can help confirm that the destination receives the intended asset on the chosen network. Avalanche Support recommends testing when in doubt. Wait for confirmation and ask the recipient to verify receipt before sending the larger amount.

A test is an additional check, not a substitute for verifying the address, token, and network. It does not make a later transfer reversible or protect you if you test an incompatible asset or chain.
What to do if something looks suspicious
- An address appeared unexpectedly in history: do not reuse it without independent confirmation. Lookalike addresses can be seeded into transaction history.
- The address or token differs from the trusted details: stop. Confirm the correct information with the recipient through a separate, trusted channel.
- The token’s name looks right but its identifier is unfamiliar: verify its contract or mint using an authoritative source for that blockchain.
- You want to investigate a suspicious address or token: use a public blockchain explorer to inspect the address or token record, as the FBI advisory recommends. An explorer can help inspect records; it does not prove that a recipient is trustworthy.
What these checks can—and cannot—prove
Address verification, network compatibility, and token identity are separate checks. A syntactically valid address can still belong to the wrong person; the right address may not accept the asset or network you selected; and a familiar ticker may identify an imitation token. If any detail remains uncertain, do not approve the transfer until the recipient confirms it independently.

Two-step verification, when a platform requires it, helps authenticate an account action; it does not independently prove that the destination address or token is correct. Coinbase, for example, says two-step verification is required for each stablecoin send in its EU/EEA context. That platform- and region-specific rule should not be assumed to apply to every wallet. See Coinbase’s stablecoin-send guidance.
A hardware wallet with an on-device display may provide another place to review a recipient address while signing, but manually comparing a long address remains difficult. It should be treated as a review aid, not a guarantee against address poisoning or a substitute for checking the asset, network, and transaction details. An academic paper discusses the challenge of address verification on hardware wallets.
