Farmers can be squeezed by higher input costs or difficulty securing supplies, but the effects differ by fertilizer, region, crop calendar and purchase timing. WTO’s latest trade-monitoring information, dated 2 October 2026, describes alternative transport efforts; the price figures below are reported historical observations, not live quotes.
Why the Strait of Hormuz matters to fertilizer supply
The Strait is a major route for trade. The World Trade Organization (WTO) reported that fertilizer-related shipments leaving the Persian Gulf for destinations outside it came to a standstill after the conflict began. Its trade-monitoring information, stated as of 2 October 2026, describes efforts to move goods through alternative multimodal logistics. Those alternatives can help keep trade moving, but they do not mean the original route or supply chain was unaffected.
WTO also assessed the possible reach of export measures. Measures covered up to 15% of world fertilizer exports relative to a pre-closure reference period; in a scenario treating all Gulf-region fertilizer exports as restricted, the share would be 23.3%. These are measures of exposure, not proof that those volumes were all lost: WTO cautions that export licensing is not the same as a complete ban and that actual reductions may be lower.
Why fertilizer prices responded differently
Nitrogen: exposed to gas and shipping
Nitrogen fertilizers, including urea and ammonium nitrate, are closely linked to energy markets. Ammonia production uses natural gas both as feedstock and fuel, so gas-market pressure can raise production costs. Disrupted shipping adds another potential supply and logistics constraint. The combination makes nitrogen products particularly exposed, though the effect on a farmer’s local price depends on where and when the product is bought.

Phosphate: mined inputs and sulfur
Diammonium phosphate (DAP) also became more expensive in WTO’s account, but phosphate fertilizers are less directly exposed to gas prices than nitrogen products. Their supply depends on mined inputs and sulfur, an important input for phosphate production. Phosphate and potash production is concentrated in a limited number of economies, leaving these markets sensitive to disruptions in their own supply chains as well.
Reported price movements, not current quotes
WTO’s 10 July 2026 article reported urea at around US$400 per metric ton before the sharp rise, above US$850 per metric ton in April 2026, and US$453 per metric ton in June 2026. For DAP, it reported a move from approximately US$580 to around US$770 per metric ton in the period described; the increases remained below the 2022 peaks cited by WTO. The sequence shows both a sharp spike and subsequent movement, not a single trend that applies to every fertilizer or a price available today. WTO’s fertilizer-trade analysis provides the context for these figures.

How higher costs can affect farm finances and food supplies
Fertilizer is an input expense, so a higher purchase price can increase the cash a farm needs before planting or during the growing season. If a farmer cannot absorb that expense, secure product in time, or find an affordable substitute, the options may include buying less or changing application timing. The financial and production consequences depend on the crop’s nutrient needs, local availability, farm resources and when fertilizer is applied. The available sources do not establish one farm-level cost increase that can be applied across countries, crops or farm sizes.
Less fertilizer use or delayed application can put yields at risk, but it does not establish that yields have already fallen everywhere. On 7 May 2026, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu warned that “the global fertilizer scarcity caused by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz will lead to lower yields and tightening food supplies in the latter half of 2026 and into 2027.” That is a forecast about potential effects on later harvests and food supplies, not a confirmed outcome.

Why the impact is not uniform or settled
Fertilizer markets have not moved in lockstep. A September 2026 IFPRI/CGIAR assessment said some earlier fertilizer price spikes had eased while others remained high, and that Gulf shipments remained largely halted. A global benchmark or past peak therefore cannot tell a farmer the current local retail price, stock level or delivery prospects.
For an individual farm, the practical exposure turns on the fertilizer type, the local supplier’s stock and price, shipping and inland transport, and whether the product is needed immediately or can be purchased later. The cited sources do not provide local retail quotes or verified stock levels. WTO’s trade-monitoring page reports the status and logistics picture as of 2 October 2026: Strait of Hormuz and global trade. IFPRI/CGIAR’s September assessment discusses the mixed market response: How fertilizer markets are coping with the continued closure.
