Can You Keep Using a Conventional Bank Account After a Branch Converts to Islamic Banking?

A branch’s conversion does not create one universal outcome. Learn what Pakistan’s rules say about consent, silence and account types—and what to confirm with your bank.

There is no universal yes-or-no answer: what happens depends on the country, your bank’s conversion notice and your account type. In Pakistan, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) rules allow a customer who does not agree to conversion to choose an available transfer to another conventional branch or to close the account. The rules also treat unanswered current accounts differently from unanswered savings and fixed accounts. Check your bank’s notice before assuming you can keep the account at the same branch.

What happens depends on your country and account

A branch changing to Islamic banking does not, by itself, establish what will happen to every customer’s account. The applicable regulator’s rules, your bank’s process and your account terms determine whether you can retain conventional banking, transfer the account, accept a replacement Islamic account or close the account.

The Pakistan-specific process below is based on the SBP’s October 2024 branch-conversion criteria, as amended in June 2026. It is not a global rule. If your account is elsewhere, the Pakistan process does not establish your rights or deadlines.

What Pakistan’s rules say

Under the SBP criteria, an account may be converted from conventional to Islamic banking with the account holder’s consent. If a customer dissents, the bank may offer a transfer to another conventional branch or account closure, according to the customer’s choice. The actual transfer arrangement depends on what the bank makes available. Read the SBP’s October 2024 conversion criteria.

If you respond and agree

Your account may be converted with your consent. Ask the bank to identify the Islamic account or product you would receive and provide its terms before you decide; do not assume the existing account’s terms or operation will carry over unchanged.

If you respond and decline

Tell the bank whether you want an available transfer to a conventional branch or to close the account. Ask how to submit that choice, which branch can receive the account and what deadline applies to your notice.

If you do not respond

The SBP criteria distinguish among account categories. A current account may be converted on a deemed-acceptance basis after the prescribed notice process. Savings and fixed accounts with no response are to be parked in a virtual conventional cost centre or transferred to the nearest conventional branch, with the customer informed. That is not the same as a guarantee that every customer can continue using the same conventional account at the converting branch.

Notice periods amended in June 2026

On June 16, 2026, the SBP reduced the period for informing the public and account holders from three and a half months to two months. It also shortened the interval between the two notices used for deemed acceptance of current-account conversion from 30 days to 15 days. These are Pakistan regulatory notice periods, not universal deadlines. See SBP IFPD Circular Letter No. 3 of 2026.

Why the Islamic replacement account needs a closer look

“Islamic account” does not by itself tell you the product’s contract, return terms, fees or day-to-day operation. In a 2014 Malaysia transition-policy announcement, Bank Negara Malaysia said institutions would explain the difference between Islamic deposits and investment accounts and allow customers to choose whether to retain deposits or migrate to investment accounts. That was a historical, Malaysia-specific transition under the Islamic Financial Services Act—not current universal guidance or a general right for branch conversions elsewhere. Read Bank Negara Malaysia’s 2014 announcement.

What to confirm before the deadline

Use the bank’s notice and contact details to get answers about your own account. In particular, ask:

  • Is this specific account being converted, transferred to another conventional branch or closed?
  • What is the response deadline, and what will happen if you do not reply?
  • Does the process differ for a current account, savings account or fixed account?
  • If you decline conversion, which conventional branch can receive the account, and how do you request the transfer?
  • What will change, if anything, about the account number, card, standing instructions, direct debits, linked financing and digital access?
  • If you are offered an Islamic account, what contract, profit or return terms, fees and operating rules apply, and where can you review them?
  • Which regulator’s rules govern the account, and where can you raise a complaint if the notice does not explain your options?

The reviewed rules do not establish whether a particular bank will preserve your account number, card, payment instructions, financing or digital access. Get those details from your bank rather than assuming they will remain the same.
