What AI Can—and Can’t—Do in Common Office Jobs

Generative AI may assist with some office tasks, but exposure is not job replacement. Evidence shows outcomes depend on the task, worker experience, and human review.

AI can help with some office tasks, especially clerical and information-heavy work, but that does not mean it can reliably do an entire job or that a worker will be replaced. The evidence points to task-by-task change: results depend on the work, the person using the tool, and how AI is integrated into a workflow. Human review and expertise still matter.

Where AI may help in office work

Generative AI is best understood as a possible aid for particular tasks, not as a substitute for a job title. The International Labour Organization’s 2025 task-based assessment found that clerical occupations have the highest exposure to generative AI. Exposure means that tasks could be affected; it does not show that every such task can be automated safely or that a role will disappear. ILO, Generative AI and jobs: A 2025 update and ILO, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure.

In practice, the relevant question is whether a specific task is a good fit for a tool and whether a worker can check the result. The OECD’s review of experiments finds that effects vary with the task and the user’s experience; it identifies human-AI collaboration as central to realizing potential gains. It does not provide a product-by-product benchmark that would establish one office AI tool as best. OECD, The effects of generative AI on productivity, innovation and entrepreneurship.

What exposure figures do—and do not—tell you

The ILO’s 2025 global assessment estimates that one in four workers worldwide is in an occupation with some degree of generative AI exposure. It places 3.3% of global employment in the highest exposure category. These are measures of potential occupational exposure, not forecasts of jobs lost.

The ILO also reported a mean automation score of 0.29 in 2025, compared with 0.30 in 2023. The score comes from a revised exposure methodology; it is not the percentage of jobs already automated. The assessment is task-based and draws on a representative sample of 29,753 tasks in Poland’s occupational classification, survey inputs, and international expert discussions. ILO, Generative AI and jobs: A 2025 update and ILO, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure.

The ILO’s interpretation is that transformation is more likely than redundancy because most jobs still require human input. An exposure measure identifies where tasks may change; it cannot, by itself, predict what a particular employer will do with staffing or how an individual role will evolve.

Why AI should not be treated as a stand-alone worker

The evidence reviewed does not establish that generative AI can reliably handle every task in an office job or independently replace human expertise. Trust and the need for human expertise remain challenges. A result that appears useful still needs review when accuracy, context, or consequences matter.

Nor should reported time savings automatically be read as proven productivity gains. The ILO’s June 2026 review says reported time savings have not yet reliably translated into higher measured output, earnings, or employment. It finds that productivity gains are uneven and often unverified; that does not mean no worker benefits. ILO, The impact of GenAI on jobs, productivity and work organization: a review of the empirical evidence.

What SME adoption and staffing surveys show

OECD survey results offer a bounded snapshot, not a universal forecast for office workers or employers. In a 2024 survey of more than 5,000 small and medium-sized enterprises in Austria, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom, 31% reported using generative AI. The survey was published in 2025. OECD, Generative AI and the SME Workforce: New Survey Evidence.

In a separate late-2024 survey finding published by the OECD in 2025, 6% of SMEs reported increased staff needs and 9% reported decreased staff needs. Those responses do not establish that AI caused all staffing changes, and they should not be generalized beyond the surveyed businesses and countries. OECD, Executive summary: Generative AI and the SME Workforce.

How to judge AI in a particular role

For a worker or manager weighing an AI tool, assess the workflow rather than making a blanket judgment about an occupation. The OECD evidence points to these practical considerations:

  • Task fit: Is the task a good match for the tool, or does it depend on context the tool may not have?
  • Complexity: Does the work require judgment or expertise that is difficult to verify from the output alone?
  • User experience: Can the person using the tool frame the task well and assess the response?
  • Trust and review: Who checks the output, and what happens if it is wrong?
  • Workflow integration: Does the tool support the worker’s process, or add new steps and review burdens?

These questions help distinguish assistance with a task from reliable end-to-end automation. Neither exposure statistics nor adoption surveys can answer them for a specific employer without details about its work and implementation.
