Did People Pay Millions to Dine With Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago? What Was Reported

WIRED reported a $1 million-per-person ask for a 2025 Mar-a-Lago dinner and source-described meetings of up to $5 million, but did not verify payments or proceeds.

WIRED reported that guests were asked to pay $1 million each for a March 1, 2025 candlelight dinner at Mar-a-Lago, and that sources described one-on-one meetings with Donald Trump as available for as much as $5 million. Those figures are reported asking prices—not proof that anyone paid them. The cited reporting does not establish how much was collected or where the money went.

What was offered, and for how much?

WIRED reported that the March 1, 2025 event at Mar-a-Lago was listed as the “MAGA INC. Candlelight Finance Dinner.” Its account says the invitation sought $1 million per person. Separately, sources with direct knowledge told WIRED that one-on-one meetings with Trump were available for as much as $5 million. The dinner amount was reproduced from an invitation obtained by WIRED; the meeting figure was attributed to sources.

Reported opportunity Reported amount What the reporting establishes
Group candlelight dinner, March 1, 2025 $1 million per person WIRED said the invitation listed this as the requested price; it does not establish that guests paid it.
One-on-one meeting with Trump Up to $5 million WIRED attributed this figure to sources with direct knowledge; it did not provide a public transaction record proving a meeting was purchased at that price.

The invitation reportedly directed invitees to RSVP to fundraiser Meredith O’Rourke and MAGA Inc. finance coordinator Abby Mathis. WIRED also reported that the event appeared on the president’s official schedule. The invitation and schedule details are reported by WIRED, rather than linked primary documents independently available here. Read WIRED’s March 4, 2025 report.

Were the millions actually paid?

The cited account establishes that a $1 million-per-person price was requested for the dinner and that sources described a possible meeting price of up to $5 million. It does not confirm who paid, whether anyone bought a one-on-one meeting, how many guests attended, or the total amount collected. An invitation’s price is evidence of an ask, not a payment record.

Where was the money supposed to go?

WIRED said the destination and use of the money were unclear. One source told the publication that “it’s all going to the library,” referring to a future presidential library. That is one source’s account, not a verified accounting or confirmation of the proceeds’ final destination.

WIRED also reported that MAGA Inc. spent more than $450 million to elect Trump in 2024. That figure concerns the group’s election spending, not money raised at the Mar-a-Lago dinner.

Why did the reported prices raise ethical questions?

The central concern raised in the coverage was access and influence. Don Moynihan, a University of Michigan public policy professor, told WIRED: “The concern is less about fundraising and more about access and influence.” The issue he described is the possibility that donors seeking favorable treatment could view large contributions as serving their interests, especially where boundaries between a president’s business interests and public role are in question.

The invitation reportedly said: “Donald J. Trump is appearing at this event only as a featured speaker, and is not asking for funds or donations.” That disclaimer describes how the invitation characterized Trump’s role; on its own, it does not establish the arrangement’s full financial structure or resolve concerns about access.

Senator Chris Murphy criticized the reported offers as a sale of access in remarks entered in the March 6, 2025 Congressional Record. His remarks document a contemporaneous political reaction, not independent evidence of payment or the dinner’s terms. The cited reporting and record do not establish that the arrangement was illegal.
