Mark as Sold vs. Mark Out of Stock: What’s the Difference?

“Sold” records a completed transaction; “out of stock” says the item cannot be bought now. Learn which status fits and what to verify on your platform.

Mark an item as sold after a completed sale. Mark it out of stock when it cannot be bought right now but you are not recording a completed transaction. The labels are not interchangeable: one describes a sales outcome, while the other describes current availability.

If you’re asking about Facebook Marketplace, the distinction is useful, but the exact effects of each control—such as whether a listing stays visible or messages remain available—should be checked in the current listing menu or Facebook Help. Those platform-specific effects are not established by the available official guidance.

What does each status mean?

Status What it communicates Use it when
Mark as sold A sale has taken place. A buyer completed the transaction and you want the listing or record to reflect that outcome.
Mark out of stock or sold out The item is currently unavailable for purchase, often because available quantity is zero. You have no stock to sell now, but you are not using the status to record a particular completed sale.

“Sold out” can be customer-facing wording for an unavailable item. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular buyer purchased it. A listing may also be out of stock temporarily, while a completed sale is an event that has already happened.

Why might a listing offer “sold out” instead of “sold”?

Some platforms treat availability and transaction history as separate things. An item can become unavailable because inventory reached zero, even if the seller is not marking a specific transaction as complete. Platforms also use different listing states and controls, so a label that appears in one marketplace may not map directly to a control on another.

The question’s wording points to Facebook Marketplace, but the official Facebook Help result available for this topic did not expose enough detail to confirm why a particular listing shows one option rather than the other or what selecting either option does. Check the current listing’s menu or Facebook’s direct Help instructions before relying on effects such as visibility, messages, or transaction records.

How marketplaces and web stores use these states

Google Merchant Center and product pages

Google defines out_of_stock as unavailable for purchase or a state in which orders are not being accepted. Its availability guidance says submitted availability should match the product page and checkout. If the page or checkout says out of stock while the feed says in stock—or the reverse—the product can be disapproved.

Google says a page can communicate unavailability with clear text such as “sold out” or “item not available,” or with a disabled or greyed-out purchase button. For products with variants, unavailable options can be disabled individually. These are ways to present stock status to customers, not proof of a completed sale. Google also says discontinued products should be removed from product data rather than left marked out of stock.

Google Search structured data

Google Search Central lists both https://schema.org/OutOfStock and https://schema.org/SoldOut as structured-data values. In that vocabulary, OutOfStock means the item is currently out of stock, while SoldOut means it has been sold out. These values help describe product availability to search systems; they do not establish that every marketplace provides separate buttons with identical behavior. See Google’s product snippet structured-data guidance.

Etsy

Etsy’s Listings Tutorial defines a sold-out listing as a published listing with zero unsold inventory. It distinguishes that state from a deactivated listing, which is deliberately made unsearchable and unsellable. Etsy Help says sellers can check whether an item sold in Shop Manager → Orders & Shipping and explains that a sold-out listing can be renewed when applicable. See How to Find a Missing Listing.

eBay

On eBay, a buyer with an item ID can still access an out-of-stock item page. For variations with zero inventory, eBay says the page can show an out-of-stock label, grey out those variations, and disable Buy It Now and Add to cart. This is eBay’s documented behavior, not a rule for Facebook Marketplace. See eBay’s out-of-stock documentation.

Shopify

Shopify’s product status is a separate lifecycle control. Its product details guidance describes an archived product as one that is no longer for sale. Archiving or unlisting a product does not establish that a transaction occurred.

How to choose the right status

  1. A buyer completed the sale: use the platform’s sold status if you want the listing to record that outcome. Confirm the marketplace’s current instructions if you need to know whether this closes the listing or affects messages or other features.
  2. You have no inventory available right now: use the platform’s out-of-stock or sold-out availability state, if available. If you sell through a web store or product feed, make sure the page, checkout, inventory, and submitted availability agree.
  3. You intend to stop selling the product: use the platform’s appropriate removal or lifecycle option rather than treating a permanent discontinuation as a temporary stockout. The available controls vary by service.

What to check if the option seems wrong

  • Confirm whether the platform is asking about a completed transaction or current inventory.
  • For products with sizes, colors, or other variants, check whether the option applies to the entire listing or only to a zero-stock variant.
  • Check whether the listing is still published, deactivated, archived, or otherwise removed; these states can have different visibility and purchase effects.
  • If a marketplace’s label or behavior is unclear, use its current in-app instructions or direct Help documentation. Do not assume another platform’s behavior applies.
