You can sell original artwork, prints, or commissioned pieces through an online marketplace or your own store. The right route depends on what you make, how much control you want, and who will produce, pack, ship, and promote each order. A listing gives you a way to offer work for sale; it does not guarantee buyers or income.
Choose what you will sell
Start by deciding whether each offer is an original, a reproduction, or custom work. The format affects your costs, workload, delivery process, and potential proceeds.
Originals
Originals can be sold through an art marketplace or an independent online shop. Include the time and materials involved in your price, and plan for careful packing, shipping, and customer communication. Some work is less suited to reproduction: Shopify notes that highly textured oil paintings and sculpture may not translate as well into prints as two-dimensional drawings or watercolors.
Prints and reproductions
Drawings, illustrations, and digital art can often be adapted into prints. You can make a limited run yourself, use a print-on-demand provider, or use a marketplace with print fulfillment. Compare available paper and framing, image-file requirements, production costs, packaging and delivery responsibilities, and the amount you retain after fees.

Custom work lets buyers request a personalized piece or commission work when a finished original is unavailable. Specify the scope, size, materials, revision limits, delivery timing, and payment terms before accepting an order. Choose a sales channel
A marketplace and an independent store solve different problems. A marketplace provides a place to list work, while a standalone shop gives you more control over its presentation and the customer relationship. With your own shop, you also have to bring visitors and manage the storefront.
| Consideration | Marketplace | Independent store |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Offers a venue where shoppers can discover listings, but does not guarantee traffic or sales. | You are responsible for attracting visitors. |
| Control | Presentation, features, and seller requirements are shaped by the platform’s policies. | More control over branding and presentation, subject to the store platform’s terms. |
| Costs and proceeds | Account for commissions, listing or transaction charges, payment costs, production, and any advertising. | Account for store and payment costs, production, and the cost of attracting customers. |
| Fulfillment | Responsibilities vary by platform and product; confirm who produces, packs, and ships each order. | You choose or arrange production and fulfillment and handle customer support. |
| Potential fit | Can suit originals, prints, or custom offers depending on the marketplace’s rules and services. | Can suit any of those formats if you can manage the storefront and fulfillment. |
Shopify’s September 2026 guide names Shopify, Etsy, Saatchi Art, Fine Art America, and Redbubble as examples of store or marketplace options. They are starting points for comparison, not endorsements. Check current fees, features, eligibility, and fulfillment terms before choosing a platform. For Etsy’s fees, use its current official fee information; costs can vary by transaction and seller situation.

Calculate a price that can cover your costs
A listed price is not the same as your proceeds. For a print, use a cost-plus starting point: production cost plus marketing and selling costs plus other costs, then add a markup. Include materials or print production, packaging, shipping you pay, platform and payment fees, advertising or other customer-acquisition costs, and a margin for your time and reinvestment. For an original, account for the time and materials required to make it as well.
- List the costs for one sale. Separate per-item expenses, such as production and packaging, from platform, payment, shipping, and marketing costs.
- Check the platform’s current terms. Apply its relevant commissions and fees to the correct price or transaction amount rather than assuming the full listed price is yours.
- Set a markup and review the result. Check what remains after the costs you included. If the margin is too small, adjust the price, production method, or channel rather than treating gross sales as earnings.
Saatchi Art’s Commission Rate help page, updated July 26, 2023, states: “If you sell an original work, Saatchi Art will receive a 40% commission on the artwork price.” The page says the commission is calculated on the artwork price. Its print terms separately describe artists receiving 60% of print profit after production costs. Both figures are platform-specific and may change, so confirm the current commission terms before pricing.

Print-on-demand can shift production to after an order is placed, reducing the need to hold finished inventory. It does not remove the need to check the provider’s available materials, image requirements, production costs, fulfillment responsibilities, and the margin left at your chosen price. For originals, plan for safe packaging and clear communication about delivery; for commissions, agree on scope and timing before work begins.
Protect your rights and describe each offer clearly
Be clear with buyers about whether they are purchasing an original, a print, or a digital file. Selling a physical or digital copy does not by itself transfer the artwork’s intellectual-property rights under Saatchi Art’s copyright policy. Saatchi Art’s terms also require artists to be the creator or to have the rights, licenses, consents, and releases needed to submit the work. These are platform-specific terms, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice; list only work you are entitled to sell.
Read the relevant platform’s current seller and copyright terms before listing, especially if a work includes another person’s image, design, or other protected material.
Plan around uncertain sales
There is no reliable typical-income figure or sales likelihood established for artists selling online. Results depend on the work, audience, pricing, costs, and ability to attract and serve customers. Treat any early sales as uncertain rather than assuming a platform will produce a predictable income. Track actual proceeds after fees, production, shipping, and marketing so you can see whether a particular offer and channel are financially workable.
