Instagram affiliate marketing means recommending a product or service and earning a commission when someone buys through your affiliate link. To do it responsibly, choose offers that genuinely suit your audience, follow the affiliate program’s terms, disclose your commission clearly beside the recommendation, and use Instagram’s paid partnership label when its guidance applies. There is no guaranteed income, standard commission rate, or follower count that ensures acceptance into a program.

How Instagram affiliate marketing works

An affiliate program gives a creator a tracked link or another approved way to refer customers. If a purchase meets the program’s rules, the creator may receive a commission. The merchant or program sets the eligibility criteria, attribution period, commission, payment schedule, and treatment of cancellations or returns; check its current terms rather than assuming these details are standard.

Instagram is the place where you publish the recommendation, but an affiliate relationship may be managed by a third-party program. Instagram also announced a planned test of an in-app affiliate tool in June 2021. That historical announcement is not evidence that the feature is currently available to all creators or in every region. Meta’s 2021 creator announcement

How to get started

  1. Choose a focused audience and subject. Define what your content helps people do, learn, or choose. A clear focus makes it easier to judge whether an offer belongs in your feed.
  2. Select relevant products or services. Consider how useful the offer is to your audience, whether you can describe it accurately from genuine knowledge, and whether its price or commitment makes sense for the people you reach. Do not recommend something solely because it offers a commission.
  3. Check the program’s current terms. Confirm that you are eligible, how the link is tracked, when a referral qualifies, how returns and cancellations affect commission, when payment is made, and what disclosures the program requires. Terms differ by program and can change.
  4. Create a useful, truthful recommendation. Explain what the offer does and who it may suit. Do not claim results or personal experience you cannot substantiate. Make the content valuable even to someone who does not click.
  5. Disclose the relationship and apply Instagram’s label guidance. Put a plain-language commission disclosure with the endorsement and link. Instagram’s help guidance identifies posts featuring affiliate product links as branded content and says to use the paid partnership label. Instagram Help Centre: What is considered branded content
  6. Review performance using program reporting. Use the affiliate program’s own reporting to check link activity, qualifying purchases, and commissions. Treat early results as information for improving content and offer fit, not as a promise of future earnings.

Disclose affiliate links clearly on Instagram

There are two distinct steps: follow Instagram’s platform-label guidance, and make the commercial relationship understandable to your audience. The paid partnership label is Instagram’s branded-content label; a plain-language disclosure tells viewers that you may benefit financially. Do not rely on one to replace the other.

A straightforward example is: “I may earn a commission if you buy through this link.” Place it where people encounter the recommendation or link. Adapt the wording to the actual arrangement and the audience’s language; this is an example, not a guarantee of legal sufficiency in every jurisdiction.

The FTC’s U.S. guidance says a material connection should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, with the disclosure alongside the endorsement. It warns against disclosures that appear only on a profile page, at the end of a post or video, behind a “more” control, or buried among hashtags or links. In Stories, put the disclosure over the image and leave it visible long enough for viewers to notice and read it. FTC: Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers

Instagram’s Help Centre says: “Meta Branded Content Policies require that you use our paid partnership label whenever posting branded content.” The same guidance treats a post featuring an affiliate product link as branded content. Instagram Help Centre

Choosing affiliate offers that fit your brand

Compare offers on audience relevance, your ability to describe them accurately, and the practical terms that determine whether a referral can earn a commission. The table is a decision aid, not a claim that any particular program or platform feature is currently available.

What to assess Questions to ask
Audience fit Does the product or service solve a real problem for the people who follow this content?
Product knowledge Can you explain its features and limitations accurately without implying experience or results you do not have?
Price and commitment Is the cost or ongoing commitment appropriate to the audience and the recommendation?
Eligibility and tracking Can you join, where may you share links, and how does the program attribute a qualifying referral?
Commission and payment What events qualify, when are commissions paid, and how do refunds, cancellations, or returns affect them?
Reporting and disclosure What reporting does the program provide, and what relationship disclosures does it require?

Third-party programs and a platform-native tool are not interchangeable unless the latter is confirmed to be available to you. Meta’s June 2021 post described an in-app affiliate tool as a planned test; it does not establish current general availability, eligibility, or terms. Meta’s 2021 announcement

Can you put affiliate links in Instagram Stories?

The FTC says that when an endorsement appears in a Story, its disclosure should be superimposed on the image and remain visible long enough to be noticed and read. Place the disclosure near the recommendation or link rather than expecting a viewer to find it elsewhere. Instagram’s help guidance also says posts featuring affiliate product links are branded content and directs creators to use the paid partnership label. FTC disclosure guidance Instagram Help Centre

Does Instagram have its own affiliate program?

Meta’s June 2021 creator announcement documented a planned test of an in-app affiliate tool, alongside other creator monetization options. That dated announcement does not establish that Instagram’s affiliate feature is currently offered to every creator, in every location, or under the same terms. Check current official information available to your account before relying on a native feature. A third-party affiliate program is a separate arrangement with its own eligibility and rules. Geography, rules, and Instagram branding

The FTC guidance cited here is U.S. guidance. The FTC says U.S. law can apply to posts made abroad when effects on U.S. consumers are reasonably foreseeable, and other countries’ laws may also apply. Requirements differ by jurisdiction, so check the advertising-disclosure rules that apply to you and your audience instead of treating U.S. guidance as a universal legal rule. FTC: Disclosures 101

Using Instagram as a channel does not mean Instagram endorses your recommendation. Instagram’s brand guidance says not to use its brand in a way that implies partnership, sponsorship, or endorsement. Meta’s partnership guidance, updated July 2026, says content featuring Meta, Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp brand assets requires prior approval. This concerns use of brand assets; it should not be read as a ban on ordinary, descriptive references to Instagram. Instagram brand guidelines Meta partnership guidance
