A crypto prime broker is an institutional service relationship that can combine trade execution, financing, post-trade processing, collateral management and custody coordination. It is not necessarily an exchange, custodian or central counterparty. The services—and the legal entities that provide them—vary by provider, product and client jurisdiction.
What a crypto prime broker does
A prime broker helps an institution trade and manage positions across crypto markets through a coordinated relationship. Depending on the arrangement, it may connect a client to multiple trading venues, extend credit, manage collateral, process obligations after a trade, and provide or coordinate custody. Ripple describes its prime-brokerage bundle as trading, clearing, financing and risk management through one counterparty; other providers describe broader packages that include custody or settlement.
The word “prime” does not identify one standard legal structure. A provider may perform several functions itself, route a service through an affiliate, or connect the client to a separate venue, custodian or settlement provider. The contract and the exact legal entities—not the product label—determine who is responsible for each function.
How the four functions differ
Execution: getting an order into the market
Execution is the process of arranging and carrying out a buy or sell order. A prime broker may offer access to multiple venues, electronic trading interfaces, smart order routing, an order-management integration or an over-the-counter (OTC) desk for block trades. These are different execution routes, and availability, pricing, routing controls and post-trade reporting depend on the provider and service.

For example, Kraken describes multi-venue liquidity and smart order routing; BitGo describes electronic and OTC execution; Coinbase describes spot and derivatives access with aggregated liquidity. These are provider descriptions, not independent evidence that a particular order will receive best execution. Ask which venues and products are actually available to your entity, how orders are routed, and what execution records you will receive.
Financing: borrowing or using credit to trade
Financing can include a credit facility, borrowing against assets, trade finance or credit used to trade across venues. A provider may lend against eligible assets held in custody, but eligibility, rates, fees, haircuts, margin-call triggers and liquidation rights are contract-specific. Product descriptions alone do not establish the terms a client will receive.

Portfolio margin and cross-margining can assess eligible positions or collateral together rather than in separate pools. That may reduce collateral tied up compared with treating each position independently, but it also means exposures can affect one another under the provider’s margin rules. Valuation methods, eligible assets, haircuts and liquidation rights determine the actual result.
Clearing and settlement: processing and completing a trade
In broad service descriptions, clearing means processing and managing the obligations created by a trade; settlement is the completion of the exchange of assets and cash. A prime broker may consolidate or coordinate post-trade activity across venues and products.

“Clearing” should not be taken to mean that the provider is a central counterparty or guarantees settlement. Ripple says it clears and finances trades executed elsewhere, but that description alone does not establish a central-counterparty role. Ask which entity legally clears and settles each trade, whether a clearinghouse or settlement agent is involved, and where the relevant cash and assets are held.
Custody: safeguarding and administering assets
Custody concerns the safeguarding and administration of assets. It may sit within a prime-brokerage portfolio or be supplied by a separate custodian connected to the broker. An integrated platform can simplify operations, but it does not by itself explain legal ownership, asset segregation, wallet structure, withdrawal rights or what happens if a provider fails.

Coinbase describes Prime Custody as a portfolio in which trading, financing, settlement and storage take place within Coinbase Custody Trust Company. Its documentation says Prime Custody assets are legally segregated but operationally commingled in omnibus wallets. Coinbase distinguishes this from Prime Vault, a custody-only option in which assets must be swept before trading. Ripple says Ripple Prime does not itself provide custody; Ripple Custody is a separate product, and tri-party custody can form part of an arrangement.
How a prime-brokerage arrangement fits together
Consider an institution that places an order through a prime broker with access to several venues. The order is executed on a venue or through an OTC desk; the resulting obligations are processed and settled; financing or margin may support the position; and assets may remain with the prime broker’s custodian or with a separate custody provider. This is a schematic of possible functions, not a claim that every provider performs them all or that every trade follows the same route.

Integration can reduce the work of managing separate service relationships and may improve capital use under a provider’s margin model. In exchange, the client may depend more heavily on one provider’s systems, credit decisions, collateral controls and operational continuity. The relevant risks turn on the legal and operational arrangement, not simply how many services appear in one interface.

Questions to ask before choosing a provider
Compare arrangements using the same questions for each provider. Obtain answers for the specific legal entity, product and jurisdiction you would use.
- Execution: Which markets, venues and products can you access? Is the service electronic, OTC, agency or another model? What order controls, routing information and post-trade reports are provided?
- Credit and financing: Is credit actually available to your entity? Which assets qualify, how are rates and fees set, and what events can trigger a margin call or liquidation?
- Margin and collateral: Which positions can be cross-margined? Which assets count as collateral, who controls them, and how are valuation and haircuts determined?
- Custody: Identify the legal custodian and any sub-custodians. Ask how assets are segregated, how wallets are structured, what withdrawal rules apply, and what happens to assets and open positions if the broker, custodian or venue fails.
- Clearing and settlement: Identify the legal entity responsible for each step and each balance. Clarify whether “clearing” means post-trade processing, access to a clearinghouse or another contractual function.
- Operations and concentration: Weigh the convenience of one relationship against the operational and counterparty dependency it creates. Check onboarding, permissions, reporting, service coverage and contingency arrangements.
- Jurisdiction and entity: Verify that the exact product and legal entity can serve your organization in its geography. A corporate product page does not establish identical regulatory treatment across locations or services.
Regulatory context in the United States
On May 7, 2025, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said national banks and federal savings associations may buy and sell assets held in custody at a customer’s direction and may outsource bank-permissible crypto-asset activities, including custody and execution. The OCC’s clarification is limited to those institutions and activities, and remains subject to safe-and-sound operation, appropriate third-party risk management and applicable law. It is not blanket approval of every prime broker, token, credit product or jurisdiction.

Coinbase’s product page identifies Coinbase Custody Trust Company as a New York limited-purpose trust company and Coinbase Financial Markets as a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant offering futures and cleared swaps. Those are Coinbase’s entity- and product-specific statements; verify current permissions and contractual terms for the service being considered.
