The figure is a historical milestone, not a current estimate: in June 2026, Forbes described Musk as the first person worth $1 trillion after SpaceX went public. Neither amount means he held that sum in cash.
When did Elon Musk become worth $400 billion?
Forbes reported that Musk became the first person estimated to be worth more than $400 billion in December 2024. The threshold reflected the estimated value of his holdings at that time; it was not a cash balance or a permanent valuation.
By June 12, 2026, Forbes reported that Musk had become the first trillionaire following SpaceX’s public listing. Forbes said SpaceX began trading at $150 per share, implying a company market capitalization of nearly $2 trillion. That is SpaceX’s valuation, not Musk’s personal net worth.
Forbes’ milestone report described Musk’s IPO-era holdings as 4.8 billion SpaceX shares and 350 million options. Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index profile, citing SpaceX’s June 2026 S-1 filing, referred to 4.76 billion shares and 352.5 million options. Those are differently reported figures; the cited accounts do not reconcile the difference. Options are not the same as cash or shares already exercised.

How is Musk’s net worth estimated?
Wealth trackers estimate the value of assets and subtract liabilities. For Musk, the largest pieces are estimated stakes in SpaceX and Tesla, with smaller stakes in Neuralink and The Boring Company also identified by Forbes. Publicly traded Tesla shares can be valued against market prices, while private-company interests require valuation estimates. The resulting total can change as share prices, company valuations, and assumptions change.
Bloomberg describes its index as dynamic, reflecting markets, the economy, and reporting. Forbes’ profile likewise changes over time. Since the estimates are moving calculations rather than fixed account balances, figures should be compared only when they refer to the same date and publisher.

Is net worth the same as cash?
No. Net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities, not money available to spend immediately. A large share of Musk’s estimated wealth is tied to company stakes. Selling shares or other interests can involve market, legal, tax, and liquidity considerations; private-company holdings are not necessarily saleable at a tracker’s estimated value.
The distinction also matters for options and conditional share awards. The Associated Press noted in its June 12, 2026 coverage that stock and conditional share awards may not have been realized as cash. A reported holding or award should not be treated as if it were already liquid funds.

Why do Forbes and Bloomberg estimates differ?
Each index makes its own calculations using market prices, reported holdings, private-company valuations, and other assumptions. The two publishers’ June 2026 accounts even cite different SpaceX share and option counts. Because the available accounts do not explain every difference, it would be misleading to combine their numbers or treat them as interchangeable.
For a current figure, consult the live Forbes profile and Bloomberg profile and note each publisher’s displayed estimate and timestamp. A precise figure without that date and attribution can quickly become stale.
