For Amazon.com sellers in the U.S., the main costs are a selling-plan charge, a referral fee on each sale, and—if you use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)—product- and service-specific fulfillment and inventory charges. Amazon does not have one universal “FBA fee per item”: the amount depends on the product and how you use its services. Estimate costs for the exact product with Amazon’s Revenue Calculator, then add any optional Amazon services and your own business expenses.
What Amazon seller fees can include
For a useful estimate, separate Amazon’s charges into the categories below. Not every seller pays every charge, and the total is not the same as profit: product acquisition and other operating costs also matter.
- Selling plan: a per-item charge on the Individual plan or a monthly subscription on the Professional plan.
- Referral fee: a category-based charge on each item sold.
- Fulfillment and inventory: FBA charges if Amazon stores or fulfills the product; with seller fulfillment, you instead account for your own shipping and handling costs.
- Optional services and operations: selected Amazon programs, advertising, product cost, inbound freight, preparation, packaging, and other seller-specific expenses.
Amazon’s U.S. prices and fee rules can change. Check the current pricing page and product-level estimates before setting a price or committing to a margin.
Compare the Individual and Professional selling plans

These are the U.S. plan charges listed by Amazon. Its 2026 selling guide describes the Professional plan as generally suitable above 40 monthly units, but the arithmetic is close around that point: at 40 sales, the plan charge alone is $39.60 on Individual versus $39.99 on Professional; at 41 sales, Individual’s plan charge is $40.59, making Professional $0.60 lower on plan charges alone. How referral fees are calculated
Amazon charges a referral fee for each item sold. The percentage depends on the item’s fee category and is generally applied to the total sales price; if the category has a minimum fee, Amazon charges the percentage or minimum, whichever is greater. Amazon defines total price to include list price, shipping charges, and gift-wrapping charges. A product’s fee category may differ from the category shown to customers, so verify the fee classification rather than relying on the listing’s visible category.
The following are representative U.S. examples from Amazon’s fee schedule, not a complete category list:

Thresholds and minimums are category-specific. For a product’s applicable rate, consult Amazon’s full referral-fee schedule and confirm its fee category before estimating margin.
What FBA can add to the cost of a sale
FBA costs depend on the product and services used. Amazon lists these possible charges:

- Fulfillment: picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns. The charge is based on product price, weight, and dimensions.
- Monthly storage: based on the space inventory occupies in Amazon’s fulfillment network, calculated from daily average volume in cubic feet.
- Aged inventory: a monthly charge may apply to inventory stored for more than 181 days.
- Returns processing: may apply when Amazon provides free return shipping to a customer.
- Removal, disposal, or liquidation: per-item charges may apply when you request one of these actions for stored inventory.
- Inbound placement: a charge may apply to distribute eligible inventory among fulfillment centers.
These are not a single fixed amount per item. Dimensions, weight, price, inventory volume and age, and selected services all affect the estimate. Amazon’s FBA overview describes the cost components; use its calculator and your Seller Central estimates for product-level figures.
How to estimate fees for a product
- Confirm the product’s fee category. Use Amazon’s fee guidance for the item rather than assuming its customer-facing category is the fee category.
- Gather the product inputs. Have the product’s dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping charges ready.
- Compare fulfillment methods. Enter the inputs in Amazon’s Revenue Calculator and compare Amazon fulfillment with your own fulfillment method. Adjust the inputs to match the costs and services relevant to your business.
- Check estimates for a listed product. In Seller Central, review the “Estimated fees per unit sold” column. For FBA inventory, Amazon directs sellers to Reports → Fulfillment → Fee Preview to download an estimate report.
- Add charges outside the calculator’s core comparison. Include the applicable selling-plan charge and optional Amazon services or advertising, then separately account for your non-Amazon business expenses.
The calculator can recalculate fees, costs, and revenue for the inputs provided; it is an estimate, so validate listed products against Seller Central. Amazon’s fee-estimation page explains its tools.

Account for optional services and expenses beyond Amazon fees
Amazon offers optional services and programs that can add charges when selected, including FBA, Subscribe & Save, FBA Export, Multichannel Fulfillment, Buy with Prime, and Amazon Global Logistics. They are not a standard charge every seller automatically pays. Review Amazon’s optional selling-service costs for the programs relevant to your operation.
A full profit estimate should also account for expenses that are not captured by the standard selling-plan and referral-fee schedule. Depending on the business, these may include product purchase cost, inbound transportation, preparation labor, packaging, taxes, and accounting obligations. Their amounts depend on the seller and product; the Amazon fee schedule does not establish a universal all-in cost.

Choose fulfillment by comparing the full unit economics
Amazon’s Revenue Calculator supports a comparison between Amazon fulfillment and seller fulfillment. To make the comparison meaningful, use the same product and selling assumptions for both, and consider more than the headline fulfillment charge:
- Estimated total cost per unit under each method.
- Product weight and dimensions, which affect FBA fulfillment costs.
- Expected storage duration and inventory volume.
- Services included in the method, such as returns handling and customer service.
- Your own shipping, packaging, labor, and handling costs if you fulfill orders yourself.
The lower Amazon fee estimate is not necessarily the lower overall cost for your business: seller fulfillment has its own operating expenses, while FBA may involve storage or other service charges. Use product-specific inputs and include the costs each method creates.
Do Amazon seller fees vary by country?
Yes. This guide covers Amazon.com U.S. fees only. Amazon states that selling-plan and referral fees vary by region and country, so do not apply the U.S. prices or category examples to another marketplace. Check the pricing page for the marketplace where you plan to sell; Amazon’s pricing information is specific to its stated marketplace.
