Maine Democrat Troy Jackson denied wrongdoing during an October 2026 debate with Republican Sen. Susan Collins, according to a report by the Washington Free Beacon. Collins alleged that Jackson used an FHA loan to buy an Augusta home while claiming it as his primary residence. The report describes allegations and Jackson’s denial; it does not establish mortgage fraud or cite an official legal finding.
What Collins alleged about the FHA loan
In its October 6, 2026 report, the Washington Free Beacon said Collins raised Jackson’s purchase of a home in Augusta and asserted that the FHA loan required the buyer to use the property as a primary residence. The report does not reproduce the loan application, mortgage terms, or other loan documents, so it does not independently confirm the applicable occupancy requirement or what Jackson represented to the lender.
That distinction matters: an allegation about an FHA occupancy condition is not, by itself, proof that the condition was violated. The report does not establish that Jackson committed mortgage fraud.
What Jackson said about his residences
The Washington Free Beacon reported that Jackson acknowledged claiming residency in both Augusta and Allagash. Jackson described needing a place in Augusta for legislative work while maintaining that his home was in Allagash. The report quoted him as saying, “My home is in Allagash, but I showed up every day to work,” and, “So I’m not going to apologize for standing out and fighting for my constituents.”

What is known about the prior ethics complaint
The report says John Andrews filed an ethics complaint in 2023 and that the Maine ethics commission declined to open an official investigation. It does not include the commission’s primary record or explain its reasoning. A complaint being filed and an investigation not being opened are not the same as an official finding that the underlying conduct was lawful or unlawful.

What the report says about travel reimbursements
The article also says Jackson received “tens of thousands of dollars” in taxpayer-funded travel reimbursements after buying the Augusta home. The report text supplies neither an exact total nor a date range, so that phrase should not be treated as a precise or independently verified reimbursement figure.
