Online pokies let people wager real money on slot-style games, but whether you can legally use a particular site—and what protections apply—depends on where you live. Check your local regulator before depositing. For readers in New Zealand, online casino licensing is in transition; in Australia, online gambling is governed by a separate federal framework.
Start with the law where you live
“Pokies” is commonly used in Australia and New Zealand for slot-style electronic gambling games. This guide focuses on online casino gambling, but it cannot establish whether a site is lawful for an unspecified reader. Gambling laws and consumer protections differ by country and may differ within a country. Confirm your jurisdiction first, then check the regulator’s current guidance rather than relying on a site’s own claims or its ability to accept your registration.
What New Zealand players should know
New Zealand’s Online Casino Gambling Act is in force, but the licensing system is not yet fully operating, according to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). Its player guidance says licensing is expected to begin from early 2027. DIA says providers that were already serving New Zealanders before 1 May 2026 may continue until 1 December 2026, but must not advertise to New Zealanders during that transition. DIA also describes a plan for up to 15 casinos to succeed at auction and gain the right to apply for a licence from 1 December 2026. These dates describe the current transition, not proof that any particular site holds a licence. Check the DIA’s current player guidance before acting.

These provisions do not establish that a site meets the rules simply because it accepts New Zealand customers. DIA’s minimum standards also say support must be easy to access after account opening, available at all times, actively monitored and able to respond in real time. They require clear communication before a paid game when its odds or return to player differ from an equivalent free-to-play game. These are New Zealand requirements, not universal standards.
What Australian players should know
Australia has a separate framework under the Interactive Gambling Act. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) explains restrictions on online gambling services and links to consumer protections and BetStop. Use ACMA’s current guidance to assess the regulatory context; the fact that a service is accessible does not establish its legal status. This guide does not verify any operator or individual game.

How to check an online casino before depositing
Once you have identified the rules that apply where you live, use regulator information—not marketing—to assess a service. These checks can help you identify questions to resolve, but they are not a substitute for confirming that the service is permitted in your jurisdiction.

- Find the relevant regulator. Start with the official gambling regulator for your country or state. In Australia, consult ACMA; in New Zealand, consult DIA’s current player guidance.
- Check the operator’s status against official information. Look for a verifiable licence or other status recognized by the regulator. Do not treat a site’s logo, an offshore licence claim or acceptance of local customers as confirmation.
- Review safeguards before opening an account. Check whether the service explains identity and age verification, deposit and spending controls, time limits, breaks, time-outs and self-exclusion. The precise legal requirements vary by jurisdiction.
- Read payment and withdrawal terms. Check which payment methods are accepted, whether restrictions apply, and how the site handles complaints. A payment option being available does not mean it is permitted where you live.
- Locate support and account controls. Find the help options, time-out and self-exclusion tools before gambling. If they are difficult to find or use, do not assume they meet your local standards.
When gambling stops feeling manageable
If gambling is causing concern, pause play and use local support rather than trying to recover losses with another wager.
