Then create a precise listing, pack the comic to protect it, and follow the platform’s shipping rules. There is no single best channel or guaranteed sale price: the right approach depends on your inventory, costs, and how much time you can spend selling.
1. Sort and identify your comics
Start by separating individual issues, multi-book lots or collections, and professionally graded books. Record the details a buyer needs to distinguish one comic from another:
- Series or title and issue number
- Printing, edition, or variant, if you can verify it
- Whether the comic is raw (ungraded) or professionally graded
- Quantity and any included extras
Use the information printed on the comic or its slab label. If you cannot confirm a printing or variant, say so rather than guessing. Accurate identification helps buyers assess what is actually for sale.
2. Assess condition and show it clearly
Take clear, well-lit photos of the front, back, spine, and any noticeable wear. Include close-ups of defects that could affect a buyer’s decision, such as creases, tears, stains, or damaged corners. Keep the description consistent with the photos.

Describe visible condition in plain language. Do not imply professional grading, certification, or restoration status unless you have a reliable basis for the claim. If you want to understand the terminology used by a grading company, CGC publishes its own grading scales; that reference is not a requirement to submit every comic for grading.
3. Estimate a sensible asking price
Look for completed sales of the same issue, edition, and broadly comparable condition. Active listings show what sellers are asking, not necessarily what buyers have paid. A mismatch in printing, condition, or whether a book is graded can make a comparison misleading.
There is no universal price established for a comic based on title or issue number alone. Treat online comparisons as context, not a guaranteed valuation. Before choosing a target, add up the costs of acquiring or preparing the book for sale, platform and payment fees, packaging, and postage. Shopify’s comic-selling guide recommends accounting for costs associated with bringing a product to market and setting a margin; your actual costs and desired return are specific to your sale.

4. Choose where to sell
Where can you sell comic books online? Options include an owned ecommerce store, a general marketplace, social selling, a comic-focused site, or a wholesale route. Shopify outlines these channel types in its guide to selling comic books online. Each involves a different balance of access to buyers, seller workload, and fees.

Whatnot offers live auctions, fixed-price sales, and a storefront. Those are available formats, not evidence that one will produce better proceeds than another. Compare the actual terms of the channel you plan to use rather than assuming a platform or format guarantees a higher price.
5. Pick a sale format and set your price
A fixed-price listing lets you choose an asking price and wait for a buyer. An auction or live sale makes sense when real-time bidding and audience participation fit the item and the way you want to sell. Consider how much time you can spend promoting or presenting the comic, as well as whether you are comfortable with an uncertain final bid.

Set a price with your expected net proceeds in mind, not just the amount shown to the buyer. Include the platform’s fee structure, payment processing, shipping costs, and packing supplies. For a low-priced single issue, handling and postage may matter more relative to the sale price than they do for a higher-priced collectible. Lots can reduce the work of listing books individually, but the right choice depends on the books and likely buyers.
6. Write a specific, trustworthy listing
Make the title and description easy to match to the comic in your photos. Include the series, issue number, confirmed edition or variant, quantity, and whether the book is raw or graded. State the visible condition and disclose notable flaws. For a slabbed book, show the label and describe its grade as printed there.
Use your own sharp photos where possible, and make shipping terms clear before checkout. Avoid claims such as “rare,” “perfect,” or “investment-grade” unless you can substantiate them and they accurately describe the item. A clear listing reduces uncertainty without promising a particular value or outcome.

7. Work out fees and expected proceeds
Compare fee bases, not just headline percentages. Commission may be calculated on the item price, while payment processing may apply to the total order value. Also account for postage or shipping labels, packing materials, subscriptions, and any optional grading expense.
Whatnot’s public fee schedule states standard rates as of September 2026: commission starts at 8% and may fall to 3% for eligible sellers at qualified sales-volume tiers; payment processing is 2.9% of total order value plus $0.30 per order. Whatnot says rates vary by category and country, so check the current rate that applies to your account and order before setting a price.
For example, if a sale is subject to the stated starting commission, the commission is based on the item price, while the stated processing charge is based on total order value. The actual amount you keep depends on the order and any other costs; do not use the published percentages as a universal estimate for other platforms.

8. Pack the comic for its format
Packaging should keep the comic from bending or shifting in transit. Whatnot Support’s comic-specific packaging guidelines, dated September 21, 2026, say: “Single comics must be bagged and boarded.” The same guidance calls for a comic mailer or cardboard box with rigid cardboard support for raw comics, and bubble wrap inside a cardboard box for graded comics. It advises against using a bubble mailer for comics.
- Raw single: Bag and board it, then use a comic mailer or cardboard box with rigid support.
- Graded comic: Wrap the slab in bubble wrap and ship it in a cardboard box.
- Mailer fit: Choose a comic mailer sized for the book and the protective materials you are using.
These are Whatnot’s stated instructions; check the applicable packaging policy for the channel you use. For any shipment, secure the comic so it cannot slide or flex inside the package.
9. Ship on time and keep records
After a sale, follow the selected channel’s current deadline and accepted tracking or scan process. Keep the order confirmation, tracking details, shipping receipt, and a record of the sale and its costs. Update your inventory once the item is sold so it is not listed as available elsewhere.
For Whatnot sellers, the US help-center policy dated May 20, 2026 requires a drop-off scan within two business days of sale, excluding weekends and public holidays. Its Shipping Policy for Sellers describes accepted scan and manifest routes and recommends the in-app scanner. This deadline is specific to Whatnot; other platforms and countries may have different requirements.
