You can start a blog with a focused subject, a publishing platform, and a simple site structure—without buying a domain or expecting it to earn money. First decide whom you want to write for, then choose how much setup and maintenance you want to handle. From there, name the site, publish a useful first post, and give readers a way to find and follow it.
What should your blog be about?
Start by deciding what you want the blog to do. You might document a personal interest, help people with a recurring question, support an existing business, or explore a possible future income stream. The purpose affects the topics you choose and how much time or money makes sense to invest.
Pick a likely reader and a cluster of related subjects you can keep writing about. A focused starting topic makes it easier to explain what the blog offers; you can broaden it as your interests and readers’ needs develop. WordPress.com’s beginner guide recommends weighing your interest in a subject, whether an audience exists, and monetization if it matters to your goals. Those are planning considerations, not a promise of readers or earnings. See WordPress.com’s guide to starting a blog.
Which blogging platform should you choose?
The main practical distinction is who handles the technical work. A hosted service bundles a site with hosting and may manage tasks such as installation, updates, backups, and security. Self-hosted software gives you more responsibility for arranging hosting and maintaining the site. Neither approach is the right choice for everyone.

| Approach | What it means | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted service | The provider supplies the hosting and site tools; the amount of maintenance it handles depends on the service and plan. | Check what is included, what requires a paid plan, and the provider’s current terms. WordPress.com says its managed hosting handles tasks including backups, security, and caching; some features, including plugin and third-party theme access, depend on paid tiers. See WordPress.com’s hosting information. |
| Self-hosted WordPress | You use WordPress software and arrange a host and installation yourself. | Plan for setup and ongoing maintenance. WordPress.org’s guide covers planning, installation, categories, pages, and content strategy. Read the WordPress.org getting-started guide. |
Compare candidate services on setup and maintenance, total cost and plan limits, flexibility, export or migration options, and available support. Do not assume that a feature or price on one provider applies to another, or that today’s plan terms will remain unchanged. The provider pages above describe their own services; they are not independent product tests. Check current renewal prices, conditions, and feature limits directly before choosing.
A computer is not a special blogging requirement: the WordPress.org setup guide lists a browser and text-editor software as part of the basic workflow. If you already have a device that can do those tasks, the sources do not establish a need to buy a laptop.

Do you need your own domain?
No. A platform address can be enough to test an idea or publish a personal blog. A custom domain gives the site a distinct web address, but it brings a cost and requires you to check availability and renewal terms. Choose one when the name and expense make sense for your plans, rather than treating it as a prerequisite to writing.
Choose a clear, memorable name connected to your subject or author, then check whether the corresponding address is available before investing in branding. WordPress.com Support describes starting with a free platform address or choosing a custom domain. Its support page says an eligible annual or multi-year plan includes a domain for the first year; that is a provider-specific offer, not a general rule, and terms can change. See WordPress.com’s setup guidance and domain information.

How do you set up the basic site?
Keep the first version easy to understand and navigate. Choose a simple design, set a site title and short tagline, and create a menu that points visitors to the main parts of the blog. Add stable pages such as About and Contact if they help readers understand who is writing and how to get in touch. Group posts into a small number of useful categories rather than building a complicated structure before you have content.
WordPress.com Support’s five-step sequence is a useful checklist: choose the site identity, write the first post, decide how posts display, create navigation, and invite followers. Its interface labels may change, so treat the steps as tasks rather than relying on a particular button name. The five-step setup guide also discusses adding a Subscribe block and connecting social channels.
What should your first post cover?
Answer a specific question or solve a recognizable problem for the reader you have in mind. Before drafting, write down what the post will help that reader understand or do. Use a headline that accurately describes the value, then organize the explanation into sections with relevant examples. Edit for clarity and remove material that does not serve the post’s purpose.
Use images or other visuals when they make the explanation easier to follow, not simply to decorate the page. WordPress.com’s beginner guide walks through brainstorming, drafting, editing, formatting, visuals, and headlines. Read its content-planning guidance. Google’s guidance likewise emphasizes creating helpful, reliable, people-first content; word counts, keyword density, plugins, or AI tools are not substitutes for useful information and editorial judgment. How do you get your first readers?
Make it easy for visitors to find posts and keep up with new ones. A clear menu helps readers move around the site; a subscribe option gives interested visitors a way to follow updates. You can also share posts through social channels if that fits your audience. A separate newsletter service is a later decision if your publishing routine or audience needs more than the platform’s built-in subscriber feature.
Search traffic is possible, but no source cited here establishes a ranking guarantee. Focus on answering the subject of each page accurately and demonstrating care and reliability. Google’s people-first guidance is the primary reference for its approach; it does not make a specific tactic or platform a sure route to search visibility.
Can a blog make money?
Some blogs earn through affiliate links, advertising, paid content, donations, or products and services. These are possible models, not expected outcomes, and they may not fit a personal or hobby blog. Decide whether earning income is actually part of your goal before building the site around it. If considering a referral or advertising program, check its current participation requirements and terms directly; WordPress.com’s hosting documentation, for example, mentions its own referral program without establishing that any particular blogger will qualify or earn a specific amount. See WordPress.com’s hosting documentation.
If you endorse a product or service and have an affiliate link, received a free product, or have another material relationship, make that relationship clear near the endorsement. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says disclosures should be easy to notice; a statement only on an About page or behind a “more” click may be missed. Its guidance notes that U.S. law may apply to posts made abroad when effects on U.S. consumers are reasonably foreseeable. Other jurisdictions may have different or additional rules, so this is a practical U.S.-focused pointer, not comprehensive legal advice. Read the FTC’s disclosure guidance.
