Should you send a thank-you email after a second interview?
Yes. A second interview is a new conversation, so send a new note rather than reusing the first-round message. The Balance recommends thanking the same interviewer again, and Job-Hunt advises making the second message distinct. Focus on something you learned or discussed in this round.
Send a separate email to each interviewer when practical. Tailor the detail for each recipient instead of copying a group on one generic note. Match the greeting to the employer’s communication style and the level of formality used in your conversations.
When should you send it?
Send the thank-you promptly, generally within 24 hours. UC Davis Career Center recommends a brief email within that window to the people you interviewed with. This is practical etiquette guidance, not evidence that a note changes your odds of receiving an offer.

If you did not discuss the decision timeline, you can ask briefly about expected next steps in the thank-you. Keep that question distinct from a later status request: if the employer gave a decision date, wait until it passes before checking in.
What to include in a second-interview thank-you
- Use a clear subject line. For example, “Thank you — [Role] interview” or “Thank you for the conversation about [Role].”
- Address the interviewer by name. Use their preferred name and a greeting that fits your conversation.
- Thank them for their time. Acknowledge the second conversation and the opportunity to learn more about the role.
- Mention one real detail. Refer to a project, team priority, customer challenge, or responsibility discussed in this interview.
- Connect your experience to that detail. Briefly identify a relevant skill or example and explain how it relates to the need discussed.
- Reaffirm your interest and close politely. Offer to provide further information, then sign with your name and reliable contact details.
Keep the note focused. Before sending, check the interviewer’s name, role title, company spelling, and any date or next step you mention. Avoid unsupported claims about being the best candidate.

A thank-you email and a status inquiry serve different purposes. If the interviewer gave an expected decision date, wait until that date has passed. If no timing was offered, roughly two weeks is a reasonable point for one concise check-in; UC Davis suggests following up by phone or email if there is no response within two or three weeks. Avoid frequent or repeated messages.

Email or mailed note?
Email is a suitable choice when that is how the employer communicates. Job-Hunt describes a handwritten or typed mailed note as an alternative if the employer prefers formal methods; mailed stationery is optional, not a requirement.
What a thank-you email can—and cannot—do
A thoughtful note gives you a professional way to acknowledge the interview, refer to a meaningful part of the discussion, and restate your interest. No reliable offer-rate statistic is established here, so treat the email as courteous follow-through rather than a hiring tactic with a promised result.
