Which bands have earned the most money of all time? A comparable public ranking of bands’ complete career income—from touring, recordings, publishing, merchandise and other sources—is not available here. The clearest like-for-like measure is reported live touring gross. On Pollstar’s worldwide headlining-show chart covering July 7, 1980, through July 1, 2022, The Rolling Stones ranked first among bands, just ahead of U2.
10 highest-grossing touring bands in Pollstar’s chart
The figures below are Pollstar-reported nominal U.S. dollar grosses through July 1, 2022, with ticket counts shown as a separate measure of audience volume. The source chart ranks artists, including solo performers; this list filters it to band or band-led acts. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band is treated as a combined touring act, as Pollstar lists it. Pollstar’s July 2022 chart provides the figures and date range.

What the ranking measures—and what it does not
Reported concert revenue, not personal income
Pollstar’s gross chart tracks reported box-office revenue, not profit. A tour’s gross is not the amount a band or its members take home after production, venues, promoters, management, taxes and other costs. The cited figures do not establish comparable net income or personal earnings for these acts.
A defined touring window, not every year of each career
The chart covers worldwide headlining shows from July 7, 1980, through July 1, 2022. Pollstar’s methodology excludes festival appearances and support slots; package tours are included in some cases. These totals therefore do not capture every performance or the full history of each band. Pollstar says its figures draw on box-office reports shared by talent buyers, venues, booking agents and artist managers, supplemented by research. Pollstar’s explanation of its historical chart describes the scope and the distinction between gross and ticket-count rankings.

Nominal dollars make eras hard to compare
The gross figures are not adjusted for inflation, so a dollar of reported concert revenue from an earlier decade is not equivalent in purchasing power to a dollar today. Ticket counts provide another comparison: U2 sold the most tickets in this group, 26,178,043, while The Rolling Stones led on gross with 22,137,799 tickets. Revenue and audience volume answer different questions.
Why newer tour figures do not simply replace this ranking
The July 2022 table is a historical snapshot, not a current lifetime total. Pollstar reported that Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour had grossed more than $1.14 billion and sold more than 10.3 million tickets by December 2024. That is a tour-specific update, not a revised all-career total calculated on the same basis as every row above. Pollstar’s December 2024 report also illustrates why estimates and reported box-office figures should not be treated as interchangeable: it described Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour gross as estimated.

With Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love and more signature performances, this mesmerizing movie built around Zep's famed '73 NYC concerts is convincing proof why. A separate Associated Press report on Pollstar’s chart through the end of 2025 ranked Coldplay first by tickets sold among millennium touring artists, with 24.8 million, followed by U2 at 20.2 million. That period-specific ticket chart is useful context for touring popularity, but it is not a replacement for the 1980–2022 cumulative gross ranking. The AP report emphasizes that ticket counts and gross revenue measure different things.

“Earnings” can refer to annual income, cumulative tour revenue, record and publishing income, or personal wealth. These are not interchangeable. For example, Forbes reported U2 as the top-earning musical act over the preceding 12 months in 2011, with $195 million; that was a one-year earnings measure, not a lifetime touring-gross figure. Forbes’ 2011 list uses a different time period and measure.
Rank #3
For a comparison of reported touring scale, Pollstar’s chart supports the ranking above. It does not show which band members are wealthiest or how much each person personally earned.
