An EV battery warranty can cover a manufacturing defect, a loss of usable capacity, or both—but those are different promises. The term alone does not tell you whether ordinary range decline qualifies for a repair. Check the warranty booklet for the vehicle’s exact model year, configuration, market, and in-service date, then look for its capacity threshold, measurement process, remedy, and exclusions.

What an EV battery warranty covers

Warranty documents may distinguish defects in materials or workmanship from excessive loss of usable battery capacity. A defect claim concerns a problem with the battery or its components; a capacity claim concerns how much usable energy remains compared with when the battery was new. Gradual capacity loss may be treated as normal wear rather than a defect.

For example, Ford’s cited owner-manual warranty page describes gradual capacity loss as normal wear and tear, then separately defines excessive loss. BMW’s 2026 U.S. warranty booklet separately describes defect coverage and capacity-loss coverage for qualifying 2026 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). These are examples, not universal terms; other makes, model years, configurations, and markets may differ.

How long is an EV battery warranty?

There is no single term that applies to every EV. A warranty may set both a time limit and a mileage limit, with coverage ending when either comes first. Compare the exact term for the vehicle you are considering, rather than relying on a general claim about how long EV batteries are covered.

For the examples here, BMW’s 2026 U.S. booklet lists 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, for defects in materials or workmanship in BEV and plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) high-voltage traction battery assemblies and internal components. The booklet separately describes capacity-loss coverage for 2026 BEVs within that term. Ford’s cited owner-manual warranty page states eight years or 160,000 kilometers for excessive capacity loss. Its displayed market and vehicle applicability should be checked before applying it to a particular U.S. vehicle.

Does an EV battery warranty cover capacity loss?

Sometimes, but only if the vehicle’s warranty includes capacity-loss coverage and the battery meets its stated criteria. A warranty may set a minimum state of health (SOH)—a measure of remaining usable capacity compared with the battery’s beginning-of-life capacity. The threshold and the way SOH is measured matter as much as the time and mileage limits.

Source and scope Capacity-loss term Threshold and assessment Stated remedy
BMW of North America, 2026 U.S. booklet; 2026 BEVs Within 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first Usable net capacity/SOH below 70%; confirmed by an authorized BMW center Restore capacity to at least 70%
Ford Motor Company, cited owner-manual warranty page; verify displayed market and vehicle applicability Eight years or 160,000 kilometers Below 70% of beginning-of-life capacity for listed vehicles; below 65% for cutaway or chassis-cab vehicles. An authorized EV Certified Ford dealer determines capacity. Ford chooses whether to repair, replace, or provide remanufactured or refurbished parts; Ford selects the measurement method.

BMW notes that capacity loss varies with use and environmental factors. Neither example establishes terms for every vehicle from that manufacturer. Consult the warranty booklet or owner documentation for the specific vehicle before deciding that a reading qualifies for coverage.

What the California battery warranty rule requires

California’s cited regulation sets a minimum battery warranty for qualifying battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles sold under its applicable requirements. For model years 2026 through 2030, it requires coverage against defects that cause battery SOH to fall below 70%, for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. For model year 2031 and later, the threshold rises to 75%, with the same stated term. See California Code of Regulations, title 13, section 1962.8 for scope and operative requirements.

The rule also addresses no-charge repair or replacement, authorized service, diagnostic labor, parts availability, permitted replacement parts, and exclusions. It allows an exclusion when the manufacturer demonstrates that abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance directly caused the need for repair. Its scope and model-year limits matter: do not assume the California requirement applies identically in every state or to every vehicle.

Does the federal eight-year emissions warranty cover an EV battery?

Federal emissions rules are not a blanket warranty against ordinary battery degradation or any loss of driving range. Under 40 CFR 85.2103, the emissions-defect warranty framework identifies batteries serving as renewable energy storage systems in EVs and PHEVs, along with related charging, storage, and power-transmission components. The cited provision is optional before model year 2027 for specified light-duty vehicles and trucks at or below 6,000 pounds GVWR. It sets an eight-year/80,000-mile period for specified major emission-control components, subject to the regulation’s scope and conditions.

A separate federal durability standard is also easy to mistake for an individual warranty. 40 CFR 86.1815-27 sets test-group requirements for model years 2027–2029 and 2030 onward over a useful life of 10 years or 150,000 miles. For 2027–2029, at least 70% of vehicles in a test group must retain at least 70% of certification range; from 2030 onward, the test-group average must retain at least 80%. These are manufacturer durability requirements, not an individual owner’s capacity warranty, and the regulation keeps separate warranty requirements in force.

What repair or replacement can mean

A covered claim does not necessarily mean you receive a brand-new, complete battery pack. The remedy may depend on the warranty, the fault, and the manufacturer’s decision. Ford’s cited terms allow it to choose repair, replacement, or remanufactured or refurbished parts. California’s rule permits certain non-new original-equipment replacement parts when their performance is appropriate for the vehicle’s age and mileage.

Before authorizing paid work, ask the manufacturer or authorized service center to explain the diagnosis, the warranty basis for any denial, and the proposed remedy. Check whether diagnostic labor is covered under the applicable terms and whether service must be performed through an authorized network.

What to check before buying a used EV

  • Remaining coverage: Confirm the original in-service date and the time and mileage limits; a term may expire when either limit is reached.
  • Transfer rules: Check whether the battery warranty transfers to the next owner and whether any conditions apply. Terms are vehicle-specific; the examples above do not establish a universal transfer rule.
  • Battery-health evidence: Ask for a documented capacity or SOH assessment and find out whether the manufacturer requires its own authorized diagnostic process.
  • Repair history: Review available records for battery repairs, replacement components, and the service provider. Ask how prior work affects remaining coverage under the applicable booklet.
  • Market and configuration: Match the warranty to the vehicle’s model year, trim or body configuration, market, and applicable state requirements. A term published for another market may not apply.

What to do if the battery fails after coverage ends

Once applicable coverage expires, the warranty may no longer pay for a repair, but the exact answer depends on the vehicle, the failure, and any other applicable protection. Review the warranty documents and service history, then ask an authorized service center for a diagnosis and written repair estimate. If considering a third-party vehicle service contract, read its battery-specific exclusions, claim-authorization rules, limits, and repair discretion; it is a separate contract, not manufacturer warranty coverage.

How to read a battery warranty for your exact vehicle

  1. Find the correct document: Use the warranty booklet for the precise model year, configuration, and market, not a general brand summary.
  2. Confirm when coverage began: Establish the vehicle’s in-service date and current mileage so you can calculate whether both limits remain open.
  3. Separate defect and capacity terms: Find out whether the document covers defects, capacity loss, or both, and what it calls excessive capacity loss.
  4. Check the threshold and test: Identify the capacity or SOH threshold, who measures it, and whether the manufacturer requires an authorized diagnostic process.
  5. Read the remedy and exclusions: Check what repairs or parts may be used, who selects the remedy, which service network is required, and what conduct or maintenance may exclude a claim.
  6. Verify transferability: Confirm the rule for a second owner in the same document or with the manufacturer.
