Banks can raise rates on new fixed deposits (FDs) after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raises its repo rate, but the change is not automatic, need not match the policy increase, and may not happen immediately. The available RBI rate snapshot is dated June 30, 2026; it does not verify an October 2026 increase of 25 basis points. Check the RBI’s official announcement before treating that move as confirmed.
Why a repo-rate increase does not set FD rates
The repo rate is an RBI policy rate that influences funding costs and market interest rates. An FD rate is an offer set by an individual bank. A repo-rate change therefore does not require every bank to change every FD rate by the same amount or on the same day.
Banks decide what to offer based on factors such as funding needs and market conditions. A 25-basis-point repo increase is not a promise of a 25-basis-point increase on any particular deposit.
What past rate changes show about pass-through
RBI data for May 2022 to September 2024 shows that pass-through differed between new and existing term deposits. Over that period, the repo rate rose by 250 basis points, weighted-average rates on fresh term deposits rose by 251 basis points, and rates on outstanding term deposits rose by 192 basis points. These are historical, system-level changes—not a forecast for a 25-basis-point move or a guarantee about an individual bank or FD. RBI Bulletin: monetary policy transmission.

What the latest verified rate snapshot can—and cannot—tell you
An RBI rates page showed a policy repo rate of 5.25% and term-deposit rates over one year of 6.00%–6.60%, with figures dated June 30, 2026. This aggregate snapshot is not an October 2026 quote, does not show what any specific bank will offer, and does not confirm the claimed October increase. Check the RBI’s current rates information and the bank’s own current rate card for the relevant date.
Will an existing FD rate change too?
Do not assume an existing FD will reset when the repo rate changes. The RBI’s historical data shows rates on outstanding deposits responding differently from rates on fresh deposits, but it does not determine the terms of a particular account. Check your FD contract and the bank’s terms to see whether its rate is fixed for the deposit period and what conditions apply.

What to check before opening or renewing an FD
Compare the bank’s current offer for your specific circumstances rather than estimating it from the repo-rate move. Check:
- The rate for the exact tenure and depositor category.
- Any minimum or maximum deposit amount that applies.
- Liquidity and premature-withdrawal conditions.
- Applicable deposit-insurance coverage.
Rate cards and scheme terms can change. The historical RBI figures above cannot substitute for a current, bank-specific offer.
