The LIVE badge appears in several places:
- On the channel’s home page: If a channel is currently live, the channel art shows “LIVE” overlaid in the corner.
- In search results: When someone searches for content your stream matches (e.g., “lofi beats”), a live stream will show the LIVE badge next to the thumbnail.
- In recommendations and the home feed: When YouTube recommends your stream to a viewer, it often displays the LIVE badge.
- On the watch page: The actual stream page shows the LIVE badge prominently to indicate the content is happening now.

Concurrent viewership: A stream with 100 concurrent viewers is more likely to get the badge than a stream with 3 concurrent viewers. The algorithm assumes a popular stream is higher quality.
Recent engagement: If viewers are actively commenting, supercharting, or reacting, YouTube is more likely to show the badge. A silent stream with thousands of watch hours but zero chat gets the badge less often.
Time since stream started: A stream that just went live gets more badge visibility than a stream that’s been on for 72 hours. YouTube treats a fresh stream as more interesting. This strategy works because:
- The restart creates a new event for the algorithm to catalog.
- The restart resets the “stream age” counter, improving badge visibility.

What Kills Badge Visibility
Several behaviors cause YouTube to stop showing the LIVE badge in recommendations, even if the stream is technically live:
- Dropping offline frequently: If a stream goes offline multiple times per week, the badge appears less often.
- Falling below quality thresholds: If viewer engagement drops below historical averages, the badge visibility declines.

Common Questions About the Badge
Does the LIVE badge count as views?
No. The badge itself doesn’t generate views. But viewers who click because of the badge generate views. The badge is a discovery tool, not a measure of engagement.
Can you fake the LIVE badge?
No, and attempting to do so violates YouTube’s terms. The badge can only appear on actual active streams.
How long does a stream need to be “live” to get the badge?
Technically, a stream is LIVE as soon as it starts broadcasting. YouTube displays the badge immediately. However, the algorithm starts promoting the badge only after the stream has been active for a few minutes (to filter out accidental starts).
Do premiere videos get the LIVE badge?
Premieres (pre-recorded videos that play at a scheduled time) display a PREMIER badge, not a LIVE badge. The two are different. Premieres get some algorithmic boost for the scheduled event, but not the same boost as true live streams.

If I’m on a 24/7 stream and someone else is watching, does their click on the LIVE badge count as a view?
Yes. Every time someone clicks on your stream (whether through the badge or direct link), it counts as a view.
Should I turn off 24/7 streaming to run “fresh” daily streams to get more badge visibility?
That depends on your audience. If your viewers expect the stream to always be on, restarting daily interrupts the experience. A scheduled restart during off-hours (3am to 6am) is a compromise: the algorithm gets the benefit of fresh badges, and viewers don’t experience interruption.
