Aer Lingus said Manchester’s long-haul operation was delivering significantly weaker operating margins than its long-haul operation in Ireland, making further investment difficult to justify. After reviewing the base’s future, the airline confirmed in January 2026 that Manchester transatlantic flying would end by 31 March 2026. Manchester–Ireland flights were not included in the closure.
What Aer Lingus announced
The decision came after a two-month progression from warning to closure:
- 17 November 2025: Aer Lingus told Manchester staff that the base’s long-haul operating margins significantly lagged its Irish long-haul operation. It began collective consultation, including consideration of closing the base. RTÉ reported that around 200 jobs could be affected. RTÉ’s November report
- 8 January 2026: RTÉ reported that the airline began consulting on measures to mitigate job losses if the base closed and stopped selling Manchester transatlantic flights for travel from 31 March.
- 28 January 2026: Aer Lingus confirmed that its Manchester base would close and transatlantic services would cease by 31 March. The phased reduction was reported to begin in mid-February; Manchester–New York was scheduled to end earlier, on 23 February. RTÉ’s January report
IAG’s FY2025 annual report later recorded that the January decision followed a review of the base’s long-term viability and that the aircraft and other assets would be redeployed in line with the group’s strategic priorities. IAG FY2025 annual report
Why did Aer Lingus say it was leaving?
The airline’s stated reason was a relative operating-margin gap: the Manchester long-haul operation’s performance significantly lagged the Irish long-haul operation. Aer Lingus said the gap made further investment hard to justify and raised whether the two aircraft based in Manchester could be used more effectively elsewhere.

Which flights were affected?
The closure applied to Manchester-based transatlantic flying, not every Aer Lingus service at Manchester. Aer Lingus said its Manchester–Ireland flights, including services operated by Aer Lingus Regional, were unaffected. RTÉ’s January report
