Not as a confirmed seven-seat production launch. On August 29, 2024, media reports said Tesla planned to start building a seven-seat Model Y at its Shanghai factory in October, but the same-day coverage also included contrary information: an anonymous plant source said production had not already begun, and a separate report said Tesla denied a domestic seven-seat launch. Tesla later disclosed a different China-market vehicle, the six-seat Model Y L. That later model does not confirm the earlier seven-seat claim.
What the August 2024 report actually said
CarNewsChina reported on August 29, 2024, that domestic media said Tesla planned to start mass production of a seven-seat Model Y at Gigafactory Shanghai in October, for China and Europe. The story framed this as a report about a planned future production start, not evidence that seven-seat vehicles were already rolling off the line. CarNewsChina’s August 29 report also said an anonymous source at the Shanghai plant stated production had not already begun, and that Shanghai Securities News subsequently reported Tesla denied a domestic seven-seat launch.
How the later six-seat plan differs
In September 2024, CnEVPost summarized Reuters reporting that Tesla intended to produce a six-seat Model Y in China from late 2025. It also recounted the conflicting reports about a seven-seat version. This was a separate reported plan, not confirmation that the seven-seat version had entered production. CnEVPost’s September 3, 2024 account distinguishes the six-seat plan from the earlier seven-seat reports.
| Configuration | What the cited reporting establishes | Confirmation status |
|---|---|---|
| Seven-seat Model Y | Media reported a plan for Shanghai production in October 2024, for China and Europe; the same-day account included contrary information about production having started and a reported denial of a domestic launch. | Reported plan; the sources do not establish a completed seven-seat production launch. |
| Six-seat Model Y L | Tesla’s Q3 2025 update described a launched China-market Model Y L as longer-wheelbase, six-seat and three-row. Shanghai municipal reporting later identified a Model Y L as the factory’s four-millionth vehicle. | Later product configuration and Shanghai assembly are documented; this does not validate the earlier seven-seat claim. |
What Tesla and Shanghai later confirmed
Tesla’s October 22, 2025 Q3 update described the Model Y L launched in China as a longer-wheelbase Model Y with six seats and three rows. The company disclosure confirms the later six-seat configuration, not a seven-seat version. Tesla’s Q3 2025 investor update is the primary source for that description.

The Shanghai Municipal Government reported that Tesla began mass production of a refreshed Model Y at its Shanghai factory in February 2025. In a December 9, 2025 update, it said the Model Y L was the factory’s four-millionth vehicle and identified it as a six-seat SUV assembled there. These reports corroborate later Model Y and Model Y L production in Shanghai, but neither establishes a seven-seat launch. See the government’s reports on refreshed Model Y production and the four-millionth vehicle.

The headline’s seven-seat claim should be read as a 2024 media report about an intended production plan, not as proof Tesla launched a seven-seat Model Y. The later, company-documented China-market Model Y L has six seats and three rows. The cited sources do not establish its current October 2026 price, orderability, or export availability, so its China launch should not be treated as evidence of availability in Europe or another market.
