Based on the Boeing 767-200ER, it can carry cargo, passengers, or a combination of both, and it refuels aircraft through several different interfaces. Italy’s four-aircraft fleet serves operational and support missions; a documented plan to add two aircraft is a procurement intention, not confirmation that they have been delivered.
What is the Italian KC-767A?
The KC-767A is the Italian Air Force’s tanker and transport variant of the Boeing 767-200 Extended Range (767-200ER). The Air Force credits Boeing with its design and manufacture and says Aeritalia, now Leonardo Aircraft, held a 15% industrial stake. Its dual role lets Italy use the aircraft for aerial refuelling as well as moving personnel and cargo.
The Air Force publishes a maximum fuel capacity of 70 tonnes, a range of 12,195 km, and an operational radius of 11,500 km. The layouts are alternatives, not capacities that can be added together. The cargo arrangement prioritizes pallets; the passenger arrangement carries the most people; and the combi arrangement trades some passenger capacity for pallet space. How does the KC-767A refuel aircraft?
It has both a rigid boom and hose-and-drogue equipment, allowing refuelling through different interfaces. The Air Force also lists a universal receptacle. Its published maximum flow rates are:

These rates describe source-published system capacities; they are not a guarantee of the amount a particular receiver will take in a given operation. The Air Force says the systems are compatible with Italian and allied aircraft, but the published information does not identify receiver compatibility by specific aircraft type. What missions does the Italian Air Force fly with it?
The KC-767A is operated by the 14th Wing, based at Pratica di Mare near Rome. The Air Force lists aerial refuelling, transport, radio measurement, and training among the wing’s missions with the aircraft. Reported fleet activity illustrates the range of those roles. The Air Force has cited support for NATO operations and Task Force Air Kuwait, participation in Indo-Pacific Jump 2024, repatriations from the Middle East, and transport of personnel, materials, and aid for people affected by an earthquake in Venezuela. What does the 50,000-hour milestone mean?
The Italian Air Force reported on 11 August 2026 that its four KC-767As had reached a combined total of 50,000 flight hours on 20 July 2026. This is a fleet-wide milestone, not 50,000 hours for each aircraft. It is also not an availability rate or a measure of how many aircraft are ready for a particular mission. Is Italy adding more KC-767As?
An Italian Ministry of Defence programme document describes plans to complete the tanker fleet with two additional aircraft, upgrade the other aircraft to a common standard, and provide associated support. That establishes programme intent; by itself, it does not establish that the two aircraft have been delivered or that all fleet upgrades are complete. The document should not be read as confirmation of current delivery status, a settled model designation, delivery dates, or present funding.
