Liberace’s Net Worth: What His Estate Was Estimated to Be

Liberace’s estate was estimated at $10 million to $15 million in 1988. The reports were estimates, not an exact or current net-worth figure.

Liberace’s exact net worth is not established by the available records. Contemporary reports in 1988 estimated his estate at about $10 million to $15 million, but his will did not itemize his property or give a total. Those figures are historical estate estimates—not an audited personal net-worth statement or a current valuation.

How much was Liberace worth when he died?

The best-supported answer is that Liberace’s estate was estimated at roughly $10 million to $15 million in 1988. Two UPI reports gave different ranges: a December 1988 story described an estimate of $11 million to $15 million in court proceedings, while an April 1988 story attributed a $10 million to $15 million estimate to Foundation lawyers. The reports do not establish a single definitive figure.

These were estimates of the estate, not a verified calculation of personal net worth. The distinction matters: an estate concerns property handled after death, while net worth generally means assets minus liabilities at a particular time. The sources do not provide a complete balance sheet from which to calculate that figure. UPI’s December 1988 report and its April 1988 report are the basis for the reported ranges.

Why the exact amount is uncertain

Liberace’s will reportedly left his property to a trust, with the Liberace Foundation as its main beneficiary. The Los Angeles Times reported in February 1987 that the will did not itemize the property or state its value; his attorney said he did not yet know what it was worth. That makes the later figures estimates rather than a total disclosed in the will. The Los Angeles Times report on the will also quoted attorney Joel Strote saying that the bulk of the estate would go to the Foundation.

What the Foundation received—and what that does not tell us

The Foundation says Liberace endowed it with costumes, automobiles, antiques, art, jewelry, and approximately $4 million in cash. It also says its scholarships and grants exceeded $6 million before its endowment fund sunset in 2011. Those are figures about charitable endowment and distributions, not a separate valuation of Liberace’s estate or his net worth. The Foundation’s account of its history includes these details.

The Foundation also says it owns Liberace’s intellectual property and licenses it to support its work. The Nevada State Museum describes a collection that includes costumes, pianos, automobiles, antiques, art, jewelry, awards, and intellectual property. These collections and rights belong to the institutional story; the available sources do not establish that they can be added to the 1988 estate estimates as a measure of a present personal fortune. See the Foundation’s brand-licensing page and the Nevada State Museum’s Liberace exhibit description.

Why Foundation finances are not Liberace’s net worth

The Foundation later reported that it and its museum were bankrupt at the close of 2013, after distributing more than $6 million in scholarships and facing lost income and debt. That retrospective account describes the institution’s later financial circumstances; it does not revise or establish the value of Liberace’s estate at his death. The Foundation’s 2021 account provides that context.

Who inherited Liberace’s estate?

According to the 1987 Los Angeles Times report, Liberace’s will placed his property in a trust and named the Foundation as the main beneficiary. The report does not support treating every asset associated with Liberace today as part of a personal inheritance or as a current net-worth total.

What to make of larger online figures

Claims that Liberace was worth $110 million are not substantiated by the contemporaneous estate reports or the will coverage cited here. The documented 1988 ranges are far lower, and the available sources do not provide a basis for converting them into a current value or inflation-adjusting them.
