It is not publicly established who will ultimately inherit Gene Hackman’s estate. News reports say his 2005 will named his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as beneficiary, but she died before him. The publicly available information reviewed does not reveal the controlling trust beneficiaries or how the assets will be divided.

What is known about Hackman’s will and trusts?

The Associated Press reported that Hackman updated his will in 2005 and left his estate to Arakawa. Her will from that year reportedly directed her estate to him. Those reciprocal wills do not, by themselves, identify who receives the assets now that both spouses have died.

A legal analysis describing probate filings says Hackman had a pour-over will and two trusts: the Gene Hackman Living Trust and the GeBe Revocable Trust. It reports that the GeBe trust passes through Hackman’s will to the living trust. The trust instruments and their full beneficiary provisions have not been made public in the sources reviewed. Without those terms, the ultimate recipients and division of assets cannot be reliably determined.

Who is handling the estate—and does that make them an heir?

Julia Peters was managing the estate, according to AP. A legal analysis reports that she petitioned on March 6, 2025, to admit Hackman’s will to probate and serve as personal representative, and that the court approved the petition that day. It also says she sought a temporary successor trustee after Arakawa died before Hackman; Avalon Trust, LLC was appointed to that temporary role on March 20, 2025.

These roles concern administration, not inheritance. A personal representative or trustee handles estate or trust matters under the relevant legal documents and court authority; that fact alone does not show that the person or company is a beneficiary.

Do Hackman’s children inherit his money?

The public information reviewed does not establish that Hackman’s children will inherit, nor does it establish that a charity or another named person will receive the estate. Naming any of them as confirmed beneficiaries would go beyond what the available will reporting and trust information show.

What does the reported “millions” figure mean?

The headline’s “millions” should not be read as a verified valuation. A legal analysis repeats an approximate $80 million estimate attributed to other publications, but an original valuation source was not identified in the material reviewed. The figure is therefore an unverified media estimate, not an established value for the estate.

What the public timeline shows

  • 2005: AP reported that both spouses signed wills directing their estates to one another.
  • March 6, 2025: A legal analysis says the court approved Peters’s petition to admit Hackman’s will to probate and appoint her personal representative.
  • March 13, 2025: The analysis says Peters described assets in both trusts and stated that the GeBe Revocable Trust passes through Hackman’s will to the Gene Hackman Living Trust.
  • March 20, 2025: Avalon Trust, LLC was appointed temporary successor trustee, according to the analysis.
  • April 15, 2025: Santa Fe County announced it had provided redacted death-investigation records under a court order. That records release concerned the investigation, not the estate’s beneficiaries or final distribution.

What would establish who inherits?

The decisive information would be the relevant trust provisions or a court record establishing the distribution. The sources reviewed do not provide those trust documents or confirm a final distribution. The county’s release of redacted investigation records and a public petition concerning that records dispute do not disclose trust terms or resolve inheritance.

Accordingly, the answer remains unresolved in the public material reviewed: Hackman’s reported will named Arakawa, but that fact does not identify the ultimate beneficiaries after her death before his.
