Nvidia closed at a record $237.58 on October 5, 2026, its first record close in four months, according to MarketWatch. The bullish case is that rapid sales growth, demand for AI computing and a valuation some analysts consider modest could support further gains. But that case relies on forecasts—not just reported results—and could falter if customer spending, growth or investor appetite weakens.
What happened when Nvidia set its new closing record?
MarketWatch reported that Nvidia shares rose 2.1% on Monday, October 5, 2026, to close at $237.58, giving the company an estimated market capitalization of about $5.76 trillion. The publication described it as the stock’s first record close in four months. These are figures reported by MarketWatch; they were not independently verified against an exchange data page.
The broader market was also strong around that time: the Associated Press reported on October 6 that the S&P 500 rose 0.6% to a record and the Nasdaq also reached a record during the surrounding period. The AP cited optimism about corporate profits as well as concerns including geopolitical conflict, inflation and bond-market pressure. That context does not establish that broad-market gains caused Nvidia’s record close.
What supports the bullish case?
Recent sales growth is exceptionally strong
Nvidia reported $96.2 billion in revenue for its second quarter of fiscal 2027, up 106% year over year. Data Center revenue was $89.0 billion, up 117%. The quarter ended July 26, 2026, and Nvidia released the results on August 26. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $2.46; non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $2.22.

The Associated Press reported that revenue of $96.22 billion exceeded the FactSet analyst consensus of $92.27 billion, while non-GAAP earnings of $2.22 per share topped a $2.09 consensus. Those comparisons describe one completed quarter, not a guarantee of future beats.
The scale of growth follows a larger fiscal-year expansion: Nvidia reported fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter revenue of $68.1 billion, up 73% year over year, and full-year revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65%. These are Nvidia fiscal-year figures, not calendar-year totals.

AI infrastructure remains the central growth thesis
Nvidia’s results show that demand for its Data Center business was a major source of recent revenue growth. CEO Jensen Huang framed the opportunity as an expanding market for computing: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” He also described demand as accelerating as more AI labs, startups and frontier labs scale, alongside open models and physical AI.
Those statements are management’s view of the opportunity, not independent proof that customers will earn adequate returns on AI spending or continue buying at the same pace. The bullish thesis requires adoption and investment to persist beyond the reported quarter.

Analysts see room between growth expectations and valuation
MarketWatch relayed Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson’s view that Nvidia’s expected growth and valuation appear disconnected. The article cited growth of about 70% and a forward multiple below 20 times estimated earnings for the next fiscal year. It did not establish the forecast source, exact growth metric, calculation date or underlying consensus, so those figures should be treated as estimates reported by MarketWatch rather than independently confirmed current valuation measures.
Bryson also pointed to cash generation as a potential source of support for share buybacks. Buybacks can return capital to shareholders, but they do not ensure higher share prices; their effect depends on factors such as the price paid, the pace of repurchases and the company’s need to reinvest or fund other priorities.

A higher analyst target is a view, not a promised return
MarketWatch reported that BNP Paribas analyst Karl Ackerman raised his price target to $345, which the publication characterized as about 45% above Nvidia’s October 5 closing price. Ackerman described Nvidia’s hardware and software portfolio as “unmatched and arguably becomes more important with agentic AI.” A target price is an analyst’s opinion based on assumptions, not a forecast investors are assured of receiving.

Growth may not keep pace with expectations
Revenue can rise sharply while the stock still falls if investors had expected even faster growth, or if forecasts for later periods are revised down. The reported quarterly growth rates are historical results; the roughly 70% forward growth figure cited by MarketWatch is an estimate with unspecified methodology and timing. They should not be treated as equivalent measures.

Customers may spend less or seek alternatives
MarketWatch acknowledged growing competition from peers and from Nvidia’s own customers. If customers develop alternatives, diversify suppliers or reduce AI infrastructure budgets, Nvidia could face pressure on sales, pricing or margins. The available reporting does not quantify how much any of these risks might affect future results.
MarketWatch also relayed Elazar Advisors analyst Chaim Siegel’s view that memory-chip pricing had held up somewhat better than expected. That is an analyst observation, not a direct measure establishing durable end-customer demand or future profitability.
Valuation depends on estimates and market conditions
A forward earnings multiple is only as reliable as the earnings estimate beneath it. If projected earnings fall, a stock can become more expensive relative to future profits even without a price increase. And if investors become less willing to pay for growth—because of inflation, interest-rate or bond-market pressure, geopolitical risk or weaker risk appetite—the share price could decline despite solid operating results.
How to read the record close
The record is a milestone in the share price, not evidence by itself that the stock is cheap or that another advance is likely. The evidence points in two directions: Nvidia’s reported revenue and Data Center growth were extraordinary, while the continuation of that growth, the valuation case and the analyst targets all depend on future outcomes that remain uncertain.

For investors assessing the bullish argument, the key distinction is between what Nvidia has already reported and what analysts or management expect next. The former establishes recent business performance; the latter is a thesis to test against subsequent results, customer spending and competition.
