To correct or change the name on your Aadhaar, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with an original document that supports the exact name you want recorded. UIDAI’s current guidance does not offer name changes through the online update portal. Most Aadhaar holders can update their name twice; a first or full-name change requires additional evidence, including a Gazette notification.
How to change or correct your name in Aadhaar
UIDAI directs people seeking a minor name correction or a name change to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The online Aadhaar update service is for address and document updates, not a demographic name change. Check the UIDAI Update Aadhaar service for the online services currently available.
- Choose a document that supports the requested name. Use an acceptable document for the relevant proof category; the examples below are not interchangeable in every case.
- Take the original document to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. UIDAI says originals are scanned and returned. Find a centre through the UIDAI contact and support services.
- Submit the update request and retain its acknowledgement. UIDAI verifies the request and supporting evidence; submission does not guarantee approval.
- Track the request or seek help if it is delayed or rejected. UIDAI lists 1947 and its grievance channels for questions about pending or rejected updates.
UIDAI’s current Aadhaar Seva Kendra fee page lists ₹75 for a separate demographic update at a centre, including a name update. This is the fee listed when checked on 7 October 2026. The separate free online PoI/PoA document-update offer through 14 June 2027 is not an online name-change service; see UIDAI’s Aadhaar Seva Kendra page.
Documents required for an Aadhaar name update
UIDAI’s June 2026 List of Acceptable Documents for Enrolment and Update sets out records usable for updating existing Aadhaar holders. The correct document depends on the change and the proof category shown in the list. Examples include:

- Valid Indian passport.
- Voter ID or e-voter ID, where details are displayed online by the Election Commission of India or the relevant Chief Electoral Officer.
- Driving licence.
- Specified photo identity cards issued by Central or State Government departments, public-sector undertakings, regulatory bodies or statutory bodies.
- Government-issued marriage certificate. If it does not have a photograph, also provide supporting proof of identity showing the old name and a photograph.
- Family-court divorce decree. If it does not have a photograph, also provide supporting proof of identity showing the old name and a photograph.
- Marksheet or certificate from a recognised board, university or institution.
- Transgender identity card or certificate, which UIDAI also identifies as acceptable for gender and full-name change.
- State or Union Government Gazette notification for a change in first or full name.
A document must be valid, belong to the applicant, and have information that can be verified. Its designation as proof of identity, address, relationship or date of birth matters: a record accepted for one proof category should not be assumed to satisfy another. UIDAI says the name in the supporting document is replicated in Aadhaar as stated, with no additional information added. Where applicable, names and dates of birth across documents should be uniform.
Extra evidence for a first or full-name change
For a first-name or full-name change, UIDAI’s FAQ calls for a Gazette notification from a State or Union Government and proof of identity showing the name currently on Aadhaar. The FAQ also says the address details in the Gazette should match Aadhaar. Check UIDAI’s Your Aadhaar FAQ for its current instructions.

This is stricter than a routine correction supported by an ordinary name-bearing document. A document such as a marksheet may be listed as proof of identity for an update, but it does not replace the Gazette notification required by UIDAI’s guidance for a first or full-name change.
How many times can you update your Aadhaar name?
UIDAI’s current FAQ says a name can ordinarily be updated twice in a lifetime. A request after that limit is not an automatic third update: UIDAI describes an exception process that requires supporting evidence and review.

If UIDAI rejects the request as “limit exceeded”
- Enrol at an Aadhaar centre with a Gazette notification for the name change and supporting evidence. For a first or full-name change, UIDAI specifies old-name photo proof of identity; depending on the case, it also identifies a divorce decree, adoption certificate or marriage certificate as relevant supporting evidence.
- After the request is rejected for exceeding the limit, contact UIDAI at 1947 or through the email address given in its FAQ and request exception processing through the Regional Office.
- Provide the enrolment ID (EID) and required attachments as directed by UIDAI.
Exception processing is subject to UIDAI’s handling and is not a guarantee that the update will be approved. Use the current FAQ for the relevant contact route and attachment instructions.

- Child recorded as “Baby of ….”: For a child aged 0–18 whose Aadhaar shows “Baby of ….”, the first request to change to a full name is allowed with a birth certificate issued under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
- HoF-based minor update: For a minor below 18, a Head of Family-based update may cover adding, deleting or changing a surname, a phonetic spelling change, expansion, or abbreviation, provided the primary name remains unchanged. It must be supported by a birth certificate or legal-guardianship document bearing the revised name.
These provisions are in UIDAI’s Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) First Amendment Regulations, 2026, listed as published on 12 May 2026.
What is not allowed—and why a request may fail
UIDAI does not publish a comprehensive list of forbidden name formats in the guidance cited here, so claims about a universal character limit or prohibited surnames are not established by these rules. The practical boundaries are document-based and procedural:

- A third ordinary name update is outside the usual two-update limit; it requires the exception route.
- The requested name must be supported by a valid document accepted for the relevant proof category. An invalid, unverifiable or mismatched document can prevent acceptance.
- UIDAI enters the name as it appears in the supporting document; it does not add an unsupported name element.
- For a first or full-name change, the Gazette and old-name identity evidence requirements apply. Marriage or divorce documents without a photograph need supporting old-name photo identity evidence.
UIDAI states: “Name of the individual as mentioned in the supporting document, will be replicated as such in the individual’s Aadhaar. No additional information will be considered for inclusion in the name.”
How long does an Aadhaar name update take?
UIDAI’s current FAQ says 90% of update requests are normally completed within 30 days, while also describing a typical 30–90-day range. These are general update figures, not a promised completion date for an individual name change; verification can affect processing. Keep the acknowledgement and use UIDAI’s tracking or grievance channels if you need help.
