He said the parents opened a minor account and made the first investment a week later. This is a company-reported individual case, not a statistic about typical customers. Families can open a Zerodha minor account online only if the guardian already has a Zerodha account and both guardian and child meet the Aadhaar-linked mobile verification requirements.
Zerodha says there is no account-opening fee or annual maintenance charge for a minor account. That does not make transactions free: brokerage, statutory charges and taxes may apply. The online process requires identity and bank documents, the child’s presence for in-person verification, and the guardian’s Aadhaar e-signature.
What Zerodha’s 28-day-old customer story means
In a statement reported by NDTV Profit on October 6, 2026, Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath said: “Our youngest customer is just 28 days old. The parents opened a Zerodha minor account, and a week later, they made the first investment.” The statement describes one reported customer; it does not establish that every infant can complete the same application or that the brokerage’s onboarding requirements are waived for very young children.
The practical question for a family is whether it can meet Zerodha’s current documentation and verification requirements. In particular, the child needs a PAN and Aadhaar-linked mobile access for the online route, and the guardian must already have a Zerodha account.

Who can apply online—and when to use the offline route

These eligibility conditions and route instructions are described in Zerodha Support’s minor-account opening instructions. Online onboarding is not available to every family simply because a guardian has documents for the child.

- The minor’s PAN and the guardian’s PAN.
- The minor’s Aadhaar number for OTP verification.
- Proof of the minor’s date of birth: a birth certificate, school leaving certificate, passport or higher-secondary mark sheet. If the birth certificate is not in English, Zerodha asks for an English extract and the original together in one PDF.
- A passport-size photograph of the minor.
- Proof of the minor’s bank account, such as a cancelled cheque, bank statement or passbook showing the required account details.
- The guardian’s signature.
- A legal-guardian letter if the person applying is not the child’s parent.
Check that names and account details are legible and consistent across the documents. Zerodha’s detailed document and process requirements are on its online minor-account support page.
How to open a Zerodha minor account online
- Sign in as the guardian. Use the guardian’s existing Zerodha account to begin the minor-account application.
- Review the guardian’s profile information. Verify or update it as prompted, then provide the contact details for the minor account.
- Enter the child’s details. Supply the minor’s PAN and date of birth, then complete Aadhaar OTP verification through DigiLocker. The online route depends on the minor having Aadhaar linked to a mobile number.
- Add the minor’s bank details. Enter the child’s account information and prepare to upload the bank proof.
- Complete in-person verification with the child present. Zerodha requires both the minor and guardian to be present for this step.
- Upload supporting documents. Submit the requested PAN, date-of-birth, photograph, bank and other applicable documents. You may also add nominees during the application.
- Have the guardian e-sign. The guardian completes the application using their Aadhaar e-signature.
Zerodha says a completed online application is opened within 48 working hours and that account credentials are sent to the registered email address. Treat that as the broker’s stated processing estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. Check the current instructions on Zerodha Support before submitting, since requirements and screens can change.

What “free” covers—and what it does not
Zerodha’s minor-account page says account opening and annual maintenance are free. Charges may still arise when transactions are made: brokerage, statutory charges and taxes can apply. Because transaction tariffs can change, consult Zerodha’s live charges page for current rates rather than treating “free account” as “free investing.”
What a minor can and cannot do in the account
A minor account is not equivalent to an adult trading account. Zerodha says a minor cannot directly buy stocks. Its published guidance describes some permitted activity and several restrictions:

Zerodha says a minor’s investment income, including capital gains and dividends, is generally clubbed with the income of the higher-earning parent. When the child turns 18, Zerodha says the minor account must be converted to an individual account with fresh KYC. The broker describes the conversion as free and says it typically takes two to three working days. See the current instructions on Zerodha’s minor-account page and minor-account FAQ.
