You may be able to request a free replacement Social Security card online through the Social Security Administration (SSA), but not everyone can complete the process online. Check SSA’s eligibility screener first: your state, age, citizenship, mailing address, ID, and whether you are changing information on the card affect the route available to you.
Do you need a replacement card?
In most cases, you need to know your Social Security number—not carry the physical card. SSA advises keeping the card in a safe place. If you do need a replacement, SSA provides it free; you do not need to pay a third party to submit the request. See SSA’s Replace Social Security card page.
Who can finish the replacement request online?
SSA’s account-based online replacement route is available only when the applicant meets its conditions. The agency says the applicant must:
- Be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old.
- Have a U.S. mailing address, including an APO, FPO, or DPO address.
- Not be requesting a name change or another change to the card.
- Have a driver’s license or state-issued identification card from a state where SSA has rolled out the service.
These are conditions for completing a replacement application through a personal my Social Security account—not a guarantee that the service is available to every person in every state. State availability can change, and your individual circumstances matter. Use the SSA screening questions to see the route currently offered for your case. SSA’s online replacement program description explains the account-based eligibility conditions.

How to apply online
- Open SSA’s replacement page. Go to Replace Social Security card.
- Answer the screening questions. Use the screener to find out whether you can finish online or should follow another route. Do not assume eligibility based only on the general conditions above.
- If eligible, sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account. Follow the application and identity-verification prompts to submit your request online.
- If SSA directs you to an office or Card Center, follow that route. Check the agency’s document tool for evidence requirements before your appointment.
- Wait for delivery by mail. SSA’s current replacement page estimates 5 to 10 business days after you complete the request. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date.
If you cannot finish online
Online screening may direct you to start the request online and complete it in person at an SSA office or Card Center, or to follow another route SSA specifies. Depending on your circumstances, you may need an appointment and documents. SSA says an online start may let you self-schedule an appointment; its appointment guidance describes that workflow.
You can also complete the paper Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) and bring it with the required evidence to an office or Card Center. The documents depend on your citizenship, age, and the type of request. A straightforward replacement is different from a name correction or another change to your record, so use SSA’s document-selection tool rather than relying on a checklist that may not fit your case.

When SSA requires evidence, it must be an original document or a copy certified by the agency that issued it. SSA does not accept photocopies or notarized copies. Its replacement-card FAQ explains the paper application and in-person option.

How long does a replacement card take?
SSA’s current replacement service page estimates that the card will arrive by mail 5 to 10 business days after the request is completed. In a September 23, 2026 article, SSA described arrival as usually less than two weeks. Treat both as estimates, not promises; an office visit does not mean the card is printed on the spot. See the agency’s September 2026 guide.
