John Ternus became Apple’s CEO on September 1, 2026, bringing a long career in product design and hardware engineering to the job. The comparison with Steve Jobs is easy to make: Le Monde reported that, early in his Apple career, Ternus once argued late into the night with a supplier about screws hidden on the back of a screen. But an eye for unseen details does not establish that he leads like Jobs—or that Apple will repeat the breakthroughs associated with Jobs and designer Jony Ive.
What Ternus’s design reputation is based on
The hidden-screw story comes from Le Monde’s profile of Ternus. He recalled staying up late disputing the design of screws that customers would not see. The profile compares the episode with accounts of Jobs inspecting the surfaces of furniture that were out of view. It is a revealing anecdote about a particular design decision, not a comprehensive measure of Ternus’s personality or leadership style. Le Monde’s profile also places the anecdote in the context of Ternus’s engineering background.
Macworld, relaying Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s account of internal meetings, reported Ternus saying that Apple would keep focusing on design because it is core to the company, and that he would make sure that remained true. Those are secondhand reports of remarks inside Apple, not a public policy document or evidence yet of how design will shape decisions. Macworld’s account offers a stated intention; the products and the process behind them will show what it means in practice.
Who John Ternus is—and when the transition happened
Apple announced on April 20, 2026 that Tim Cook would become executive chairman and Ternus would become CEO on September 1, 2026. That planned handoff has now taken place. Apple says Ternus joined its product design team in 2001, became a vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team as senior vice president in 2021. The company credits his work on products including iPad and AirPods, as well as generations of iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch. This chronology and product credit come from Apple’s own announcement. Apple’s succession announcement is the primary account of his internal progression.

That record makes Ternus a product-development leader with unusually deep experience inside Apple, but it does not make him a Jobs substitute. Jobs was Apple’s co-founder and a returning CEO; Ternus is an engineer promoted through a planned succession after Cook’s tenure. Reporting characterizes Ternus as more collaborative and less visionary than Jobs. The comparison is most useful when it distinguishes skills and context, not when it assumes the same temperament or outcome.
What people mean by Apple’s earlier design era
The Jobs–Ive era was not simply a story of attractive objects or one designer’s taste. It involved connecting hardware to software and to the experience of buying and using a product. In a Fast Company oral history based on interviews with more than 50 former Apple executives and insiders, former iPod division head Tony Fadell described a shift around 2001: Apple design became experiential, linking the iPod to iTunes and retail. That account emphasizes a connected product experience, not industrial design in isolation. Fast Company’s history of Apple’s design process also describes the work as a team effort shaped by constraints.

Not every admired design became a successful product. The same history recounts that Apple discontinued the Power Mac G4 Cube after slow sales and a high price, even though team members valued its industrial design. The lesson is not that striking design is unimportant; it is that design has to solve a customer problem at a price and in a product experience people will accept.
Jony Ive’s departure also makes the “we have seen this before” framing more complicated. Apple’s 2019 announcement said Ive would leave as an employee to form an independent design company, with Apple among its clients and continuing to work with him on projects. At that time, Apple said industrial-design leader Evans Hankey and human-interface-design leader Alan Dye would report to COO Jeff Williams. That was the structure announced in 2019, not a description of Apple’s organization today. Cook called Ive’s role in Apple’s revival immense; Ive said he was proud of the design team, process, and culture built at the company. Apple’s 2019 announcement about Ive records those statements and the arrangement at the time.

Has Apple lost its design influence?
Some former staff and observers argue that design’s influence diminished after Jobs’s death and Ive’s eventual departure, as Apple concentrated on scaling its popular products. Fortune’s July 2026 feature reports that view alongside criticism that some recent iPhone releases have felt incremental. These are attributed assessments, not a published company measure of design quality or authority. The same coverage recognizes new product categories such as Apple Watch, which complicates any claim that Apple stopped making significant product bets. Fortune’s analysis presents the criticism and the counterpoints.
Apple’s commercial record under Cook is a different measure, and it is substantial. In its April 2026 announcement, Apple said its market capitalization had grown from about $350 billion at the beginning of Cook’s tenure to $4 trillion, annual revenue had risen from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, and its active installed base exceeded 2.5 billion devices. Those figures are Apple-published claims, not independent measures of design influence. Apple’s announcement gives the company’s own account of its scale and growth.

Commercial success and appetite for risk are not the same thing. In an April 2026 essay, The Atlantic argued that Apple’s business strength coexisted with a reduced willingness to take risks. That is the author’s interpretation, not a settled verdict. The Atlantic’s essay on Cook’s legacy makes the case for that tension.

The meaningful question is not whether Ternus can restore a particular past. It is whether design has real weight in present-day decisions and leads to products that are distinctive, useful, and well integrated. The available evidence is too early to establish the result; these are practical signals to watch, not predictions.

- Design has influence before launch. Look for evidence that design shapes product choices and trade-offs, rather than merely refining a finished concept.
- Products address recognizable user needs. A striking form is not enough if the product is too costly, awkward, or limited to gain traction—the Cube’s history is a reminder.
- Hardware, software, and services work together. The iPod-and-iTunes example shows why Apple’s earlier design reputation rested on an experience spanning more than the device itself.
- The company can take risks and exercise restraint. New ideas matter, but so does the willingness to rethink or cancel work that fails to meet the company’s quality bar.
Fortune quoted investor Gene Munster arguing that Apple must reinvent itself and that AI could give a competitor the power to challenge it over time. That is Munster’s warning, not proof that a specific product or technology will determine Ternus’s success. Fortune’s report includes his assessment.
