What are the central teams checking?
The three teams were divided across the state, with each visiting three to four districts and assessing drought-hit taluks, according to Parameshwara, as reported by IANS on October 5, 2026 and The New Indian Express on October 6, 2026. The visits began on October 3 and were expected to conclude by October 6.
The inspection is a field assessment, not a confirmed central finding. The New Indian Express said the team was expected to submit a report to the Union government. The reports available on October 7 do not confirm that the report was submitted or that the Centre approved assistance.
How much loss and relief has Karnataka reported?
Parameshwara put the state’s estimated drought losses at about Rs 46,000 crore across 177 taluks. This is Karnataka’s estimate, not a finding by the central teams.

News reports gave different amounts for Karnataka’s relief request:

The reports do not explain why the two figures differ or whether they cover different scopes or submissions. Neither amount should be confused with the state’s estimated losses, a central assessment, or relief approved by the Union government.

Could drought affect Karnataka’s GST collections?
Parameshwara said crop losses could have wider economic effects because drought affects sectors beyond farming. IANS quoted him as saying, “Naturally, GST collections may also decline.” That is a warning about a possible effect, not evidence that GST receipts have fallen. The reports provide no measured drought-driven decline in Karnataka’s GST collections.

As of October 7, 2026, the reports cited here do not confirm submission of the central teams’ final assessment or a Union government decision on assistance. The extent of any eventual relief and any actual GST revenue effect therefore remain unconfirmed.
